Risen Rathe, last of the New Matukai, hefted his wan-shen onto the jungle plateau. The highland meeting place was a symbol, but a practical one.

First, Risen wanted to be sure that students only took with them what they could carry up a hundred-foot high rock wall. Second, from this vantage, the full spectacle of the wilderness would leave its impression: emerald and yawning navy were spread out to the horizon, alive with pulsing disorder. Irrepressible. For many young Jedi who grew up among cities and starships, this was the first lesson.

Nature will swallow you, if you let it.

At the edge of the plateau Risen performed his kata, and waited for anyone who came climbing over the ledge. Once assembled, the rest of the lessons would follow.

The Jedi didn't have any preconceptions about the wilderness. Perhaps the only thing she was truly wary of was a Wyyyschokk. She hated spiders, much less ravenous, mega-sized iterations. To find the place was easy enough, and making the trek alone gave her ample time to clear her head. There wasn't a huge explanation regarding what this training was about, but any that knew of her were aware she didn't turn down the opportunity to learn something new. She demonstrated grace, and agility as she climbed; all too used to it. After all, she had lived here most of her life as a Young Adult; they used to, and some extent, STILL played in these trees. Of course it wasn't wise to venture to deep into the Jungle of Kashyyyk alone. There was a list of reasons why to pick from.

For now, she would simply climb. From the outside looking in, it might be easy to assume she was careless, but a sharp eye would see she was simply confident. Where she lacked in raw strength, she made up for in superb
calisthenics, and of course the Force, that was always with her. It took about four minutes, but eventually she would pull herself up on the edge, sitting briefly to look out at the marvelous sight that was Kashyyyk. Turning back, she immediately spotted Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri and smirked in the Togruta's direction. She would've said hi, but she had never trained with this Master before, so she wouldn't risk their first interaction being a sour one. Aayla moved to kneel a mere seven feet or so from Risen Risen , observing his motions with interest.

Slip climbed up after Kuxirra and her parents. Since she had a broken ankle, Slip had gone with her, to make sure she didn't injure herself. Why she was deciding to do this, Slip had no idea. It must have been painful for her, though. Slip silently cursed himself for being so fond of her, and being so worried about her. Seriously, one of these days she would get him killed.

Slip wore his jumpsuit, and climbing boots. His messy, green hair blew lightly in the wind, and sweat beaded down his face. He had nearly fallen, twice, and he was starting to get uneasy with his climbing. A small bird had taken up residence in his hair, and was busy making itself comfortable. When Slip moved too much, it pecked his head, in order to tell Slip to stop moving so much so that it could be comfortable. Why did animals like to torment him?

Eventually, they made it too the top. Slip pulled himself over onto the plateau, and he lay on his hands and knees, sweating, and trying to regain his energy. The bird squawked in surprise and flew off, probably to go eat a bug or something. He was hoping that it wouldn't come back, but he was never that lucky.

Slip looked over at Kux. "You alright?" He asked her, still worried about her broken ankle, and the fact that she just climbed up a cliff. She was extremely reckless, but Slip couldn't stop her, so the best he could do was go with her and make sure she didn't kill herself.

Slip looked around, and saw only a few other people, but other then that, the lesson hadn't started yet Perfect for Slip to regain some of his energy.

It had been a long time since Caedyn last attended a survivalist class, let alone a good healthy trip out into the wilds of Kashyyyk. Once upon a time, he and his former Master would often spend their days exploring world to world, taking with them nothing more than they could carry upon their shoulders, yet that was before he had entered into the Order of the Silver Jedi and so today came with fond memories, as well as a well-needed reminder of the basics needed to go it alone in the Galaxy.

Strapped against his shoulders, he carried a backpack with only the necessities. His Robe, several survival blanket packs, a couple of bottles of hydro, rations and medical supplies should anyone be injured during their time away from civilization. The Jedi Knight had taken it upon himself to pack extra's, thinking of those who might have neglected to bring their own supplies with them. This was after-all a learning environment, despite how severe the consequences could be compared to life within the Silver Rest.

Reaching the summit alongside the three students and Master Risen Rathe, a fellow Jedi Knight and the leader of the expedition, Caedyn nodded to the group and turned to look back in the case that there were stragglers yet to join them.

It was good to be back on Kashyyyk again. The forest world of the Wookies had started to feel like home. More so because of the Silver Rest and learning along side his fellow Padawans there. Still, he had made a number of trips beyond the temple and knew a thing or two about the planet. The fresh air and breeze making its way through the forest with its symphony of leafs was calming and the prospect of battle finally felt distant once more. Since joining the Silver Jedi Order, Mathieu had seen more combat than average - it would be good to finally be liberated from it. But even then, he still carried his two sabres with him, as he always did.

The walk to the cliff had been a peaceful one. Upon arriving, Mathieu looked up to the top, letting out a slight sigh as he prepared for the effort that was to come. While he was no stranger to climbing, it was rarely something which he looked forward to. The Padawan had broad shoulders with a heavy layer of muscle characterising his form. The strength it brought was rather well matched by the added weight which would have to be carried. Still, he had brought enough sandwiches for several people, a torchlight, some rope and a large wind shelter. Better safe than sorry.

Scaling the cliff did not have to be difficult, and while he may have been somewhat slower than others - especially those who were more agile - his approach was safe and it worked. For this segment, he would rely more on his own natural prowess rather than the force to aid him in the ascent. Having specialised in enhancement, there seemed to be little point to using it for this particular challenge. Methodically and without taking any significant risks, Mathieu steadily made his way up towards the top. When he was finally there, his eyes scanned the others who were already present, recognising both Risen and Kuxirra

"Hi all" he said, keeping a friendly tone as a soft smile spread across his lips.

Half-absorbed in his exercise, Risen watched the trickle of students climbing over the plateau ledge. Most he did not recognize — two younglings, and one with her parents, which made him cock an eyebrow. But at their age, Risen had already seen years of combat in the ash-swamps of his homeworld, and so he had no reasoon to doubts about their potential.

There also sprang over the edge a woman, older than many padawans Risen had met — likely older than he was, though not obviously. So as she moved to observe his kata, he maintained even movements and steady breath. At least this student appreciated technique.

Psh. You’re just doing that to look cool. Risen sighed through his teeth. The voice of his padawan beleaguered him even when the boy himself wasn’t around to do the job. Centin wasn’t coming today, but the next padawan that climbed onto the platform was someone Risen recognized as the boy’s friend. Mathieu, maybe?

With one sharp, final motion Risen brought the blade of his wan-shen down. Facing forward to address the crowd, he at last noticed the fellow knight who would be joining them. He knew Caedyn by reputation, but had never met the man personally. To him, Risen gave a nod of greeting. To the rest, he began: “When I was training under the Matukai on Dathomir, we’d spend months out on the mire. If the rancors didn’t get to us first, the witches would…” He trailed off. Sky above, they were all watching him. The speech he’d prepared fluttered away.

With a breath, he attempted to keep his nerves from showing, hands clasped tight behind his back. “We only used what we had. We only ate what we caught.” He stepped aside, displaying the vista beyond him. “If you brought food, come up and toss it over the edge.”

Before Risen Risen finished, Kuxirra grinned at Subject 648 Slipknot Subject 648 Slipknot . "I'm good, bro. How about yourself?" Slip was the one person Kuxirra would ever call "bro."
"Kuxirra..." Zenda began, exasperated at her daughter's stubbornness to come all the way up here with a broken ankle. "You need to slow down."
The Padawan's response was to stick out her tongue at the Knight who dared question her decisions.
Leehak facepalmed. "I should've expected this..." He muttered to his wife. "We were just like her at her age."
As Risen spoke, the three ceased to speak, listening. None of them had brought food, as they'd expected something like this.

His assumptions weren't wrong, Aayla by all means could be considered only a padawan by ranking; she had experience, and skill. Though, that didn't stop her from attending a training of this nature. She didn't know about the complexities of surviving in the wild, even though she had grown up on Kashyyyk for most of her life. After all, she was in the bosom of the Silver Jedi, and while they did from time to time make incursions into the wilds, it was never anything done to purposely test, or extrapolate on that specific skillset. If he didn't mention it, she wouldn't think about it. Not openly anyway. It wasn't the first time she had heard she was a little old for a Padawan.

The real question was whether or not it was her fault... It was, and she didn't blame anyone for holding her back, considering her potential to go off the rails.

'Psh. You’re just doing that to look cool.'

Aayla's face scrunched lightly, wondering who in the heck he was aiming that at. In fact, at that moment, she turned to observe some that had made the trek behind her. Taking stock of each of them in turn.

Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri Kuxirra Tano-Bonteri she met before, noting she still had the entourage of her parents. She didn't blame them though, they had been missing their daughter for some time; if Aayla ever did have a kid, and ended up in the same situation she would be stuck to him, or her like glue. All in all, she liked the Togruta, and her parents were understanding, not the usual snobby Knights, or Masters you ran into.

Mathieu Brion Mathieu Brion was someone she had seen around, but never had the pleasure of being in the same setting with. Her first impression of him? Oafish... Though, it was in a cute way. Or even like a big brother type. To boot, he seemed to have at least some sort of strength to him, she had made that climb with practically no gear for a reason... Speaking of which, observing what he did bring, it was clear he was the type to think of others first. Always a positive in her book. She would keep an eye on that one.

Caedyn Arenais gave off the stoic air of a Knight, she related his actions to that of a shepherd dog, aware he was likely looking out for any Padawans potentially in distress from the climb, and needing help. She could be wrong, but rather doubted it. His actions also gave the odd maybe impression that he is who Risen was referring too, but... She could've been wrong about that as well.

Subject 648 Slipknot Subject 648 Slipknot was absolutely new to her, a brand new face to register. She watched, and eavesdropped a bit on the conversation he had with Kuxirra briefly, smiling in that direction briefly; if he cared for the Togruta, he was fine in her book. That being said, she was feeling a little nosy about that bro part. It wasn't possible to have a human brother as a Togruta, or vice-versa, was it? In any case, that was something she would allow to be learned through time, and not by prying.

For now, she turned back to the Master, hands placed on her thighs as she still knelt. When he spoke, she noted his sentence, or what she assumed was going to be a speech seemed stunted. As if he had lost his words. Interesting...

In any case, she did as he instructed, getting to her feet and walking to the edge as she poked around in the rations slot on her Jedi Utility belt. She removed six flat ration packs, and flicked them over the edge. "Hope everyone ate for the night..." she mumbled, crossing her arms and stepping back from the ledge, turning back to face the Master, but this time she would remain standing.

He knew he had to do this, He knew he NEEDED to do this, Jasper, in his mind, could not afford to waste at any time at the Silver Jedi Concord. From day one he knew what his plans were and was not going to not let anything stop him from achieving them. While he felt he needed to learn the force and all the techniques that involve it, he knew also needed to focus on his physical attributes and more importantly, his survival. He knew he could not mind himself he was always more of an inside person if it means anything well most people will be outside doing athletics you would rather be inside studying up and increasing knowledge. Jasper knew this and recognized that he needed to focus on his physical attributes more after thinking about his body after some training in the force. Jasper honestly would rather focus on increasing his knowledge of the force and practicing the force techniques that he learned over the course of being at the silver Jedi Concord, but he knew that he should not neglect his own body in exchange for knowledge. Not without facing serious consequences in the future that could cost him dearly. And that worried him in the long run.

Jasper knew he was going to be facing difficulties trying to survive out here, but the second he started to climb up the hills, carrying on his back a backpack with items that he would feel be necessary for this lesson: first aid supplies, bottles of water, nightsticks for the dark, two sleeping bags (because you never know in Jasper mind when you will need another other one), and an extra set of clothes as well as other things, he felt the lesson already making an impact on him. He figured the backpack would add weight and challenges to him, but he was beginning to see that it might have been a good idea to pack a lot of stuff and carry it on his back.

When he made It at the top, he took mid deep breaths, making sure no one realizes it as a precaution for a weakness they could take advantage of. Deep inside he knew he should have to worry about that, but the part on him that relied on his instincts made him think that way. Looking around to see who is here, Jasper spoke up, “I’m here.” He said in a low tone that could still be heard to those nearby.

Slip smiled back lightly at Kuxirra. "I'm fine, that bird finally flew off and left me alone, but I have no idea if it will be back or not. Other than that, I'm still alive, I should be good." He told her, moving from his position on his hands and knees to a kneeling position. Then, Slip looked at her broken ankle. "I still can't believe that you decided to do this! When you're injured and need to rest! Is it all right? Does it hurt now? Was it hurting when we were climbing? Did you put too much pressure on it when we were climbing? Did you use it too much? Is it sore?" He asked her, immediately beginning fussing over her, her stubbornness, and her injured ankle. Seriously, this girl would not take a break, even when she was injured and needed to heal. The last thing she should be doing with a broken ankle is climbing a cliff wall, and yet, she did it anyway. She was absolutely crazy. Then again, so was Slip, so he could at least vaguely understand it. But still, did she have to constantly put herself in danger of getting hurt?!

Speaking of crazy... Slip hadn't noticed any of his hallucinations yet. Which was weird. Usually he would have seen at least one of them by now, but nope, they were eerily gone. That was... strange. Definitely unusual. Though, when he had been climbing, one of them had whispered in his ear, and he nearly fell because of it. But other than that, he hadn't noticed much activity from the hallucinations.

Slip looked around at the others. He saw Knight Caedyn Arenais , apparently also coming along for the ride. Another Padawan climbed up after them, and merely spoke two words, so that everyone would know that they were here. Another Padawan came up that Slip was unsure if he recognized or not. He had no clue if he had met any of them or not, he saw a lot of faces here, and it was hard to remember all of them. Another, older woman was up here too. Slip didn't recognize her, but she was apparently examining Slip strangely. That was... unnerving. He gave her a small wave, since she was looking at him so intensely.

Then, the Knight leading the training, Risen Risen , spoke up, telling them to throw over any food they had off the edge. Slip actually had brought food, but the bird had stolen all of it, so now he didn't have any remaining. At least now he didn't need to throw anything over the edge.

Caedyn Arenais had heard of the Matukai, yet hadn't had the opportunity to see their practices first hand, nor had he realized that Risen Rathe was of their people. The moment his fellow Jedi Knight mentioned discarding the food, Caedyn gave a quiet yet audible chuckle from under his breath, stepping forward with a rather amused look and shouldering his backpack to the ground, kneeling to retrieve the rations and volunteering them to the open air for which they'd plummet over the edge.

"Forgive me Master Rathe" he apologised with a smile, standing back up to his feet; "I didn't realize we had the pleasure of the Matukai experience" he inclined his head in a respectful nod before collecting his pack and returning to stand alongside the other Students, pleased to be able to share in the journey alongside them.

Given the new details, he wondered if the pack had been entirely unnecessary, yet it never hurt to be prepared. Just in case. Either way, with Risen leading their group, Caedyn was happy to know that the Padawan accompanying them would be in for a real learning experience, and hopefully enjoy every part of it too.

Furthermore, the Jedi Knight was personally intrigued by the Matukai, for they were known for many skills, survival and their melee prowess among others. What more could one ask for in a tutor for such a time!

It was not long after Mathieu's arrival that the Knight who would be leading them started speaking. "Just in time" he thought, letting a soft smile grow on his lips, quite happy with the good timing. Finding the small moments of joy could do a lot to make a day brighter, regardless of whether it was already good or not. Another, Jasper, did not seem to be quite as lucky and announced that he was there after Risen had spoken. Hopefully, it wouldn't make things hard on him. With that thought in mind, Mathieu gave him a friendly nod and waved him over.

Only then did he realise the content of what had just been said by the instructing Knight. They were to throw their food over the cliff. It seemed like a rather drastic move, seeing as how they could have simply left it there for retrieval later - but then, maybe Risen knew something which Mathieu did not. A small somewhat surprised "Oh" escaped him. With little else to do other than accept it, Mathieu walked towards the cliff edge alongside his fellow Padawan Aayla and Caedyn, tossing it away just like they did. The latter seemed to take it incredibly well, eager to learn and as positive as ever. The former seemed less happy, however. Looking over to her, the large Padawan smiled, having listened just closely enough to have heard her mumble "I'm sure we'll find something if someone's hungry" he said, offering a smile before returning to the others.

His thoughts lingered on her for a few moments - he did wonder why her hair was gray - for looking at her, it was clear to see that she was probably somewhere in her twenties. They also wandered to Slipknot and Kuxirra - they seemed to be closer than the others, but the fact that her parents stood right by her side made their interaction seem a little bit more awkward. Still - if they didn't mind, neither did Mathieu.

A few moments of silence passed, prompting Mathieu to look to Risen and let out a careful "The food has been tossed"

Remembering Wildflowers

Gusts of wind scattered rations over the canopy. It was a stunt, but a calculated one: they all needed to see their sustenance fall away, really feel it slip through their fingers. Most never even considered they might meet their end by starvation — that hint of fear is vital. And he’d made sure not to discard the more urgent needs, as even a day without water would spell danger.

To Caedyn’s apology, Risen waved a dismissive hand. To the latecomer, he delivered a withering sergeant’s glare, but otherwise gave no admonition. Soon the party was reassembled. Risen spoke in short phrases, lest his nerves get the best of him again.

“Whatever tools you brought are your own. A lightsaber can mean the difference between shelter and exposure, if you have one. But don’t ignite it unless I say.” He looked again over the horizon. It wasn’t long from dawn, the sun lapping at the sky.

“Today’s hiking, hunting, and tracking. We break at noon for basic foraging and water safety. Then it’s on till nightfall.” Risen turned without waiting for reply. “We march.”
…

Hours passed, and the day was annoyingly, instructively hot. Long stretches of silence were punctured by terse instructions. On rough terrain, keep your center of gravity low and level above your legs. Don’t try rationing water, but instead drink at regular intervals. Deep breathing techniques, famous to the Matukai, helped stave off fatigue.

Survival training was different for Force-sensitives, and Risen tried to incorporate these teachings as well.

Though he worried about the pace of instruction, he was also aware that even the basics would take weeks to cover. He himself had spent years achieving some level of mastery. For now though, passing between necks of jungle draped with thick, silvery spiderwebs, and muddy glades ringed by broken stones, he turned his senses to the faring of his students.

She watched those rations scatter into the wind, glancing, then turning her head to Mathieu as he spoke. Lucky for him, stoic Aayla had "died" in front of the council a few days prior, and she was interested in making actual friends again. As such, she smiled at him as he spoke. He was cute up close... "Yeah, right. I ate a lot before I came... " she responded, lighthearted in tone and intent. With her response, her arms fell away from her chest, instead digits would curl around her midsection on either side, tilting her head as she regarded him.

At which point, she noted Slip offering her a wave, and waved back at him; he received a smile as well, even though his own face seemed somewhat worried. He was probably freaked out she was staring at them earlier, but who knew. She continued to listen to his instruction, and would glance off in annoyance when he mentioned not being able to use their sabers. Find by her, but if she died from a silly rule like that she was going to haunt him. It was at that point she did a final check of everything she had with her, which wasn't much.

Her standard lightsaber, a cylindrical canteen, well up until a moment ago she had rations too. She imagined bringing food from home sort of defeated the purpose of survival training. Not to mention, she promised... She promised she would learn anything, everything if she lived long enough. The Council had given her a shot, and she was going to kill it. As such, when he said we march, she hesitated a bit, letting a few go first before following. It wasn't that she was scared or anything, but she hated... Hated, once more for the people in the back; HATED spiders. Spider webs, anything that they produced was damned in her book. You could categorize her as the type to burn down the house, blow up the the whole speeder... Orbital bombardment to make sure... That bad.

~~~
As the hours went, so did the interest in talking; once that went, she sort of felt it... That mode. Like something had switched over. As Aayla sweated what felt like her life out, she would do as instructed, learning a little more about how to make walking on certain terrain more comfortable on her body. She was a warrior after all, so her body had importance. She quickly learned that actually walking this environment was different from the little "wargames" the padawans used to play in these trees; this took patience, and an eye for detail. The last thing you wanted out her was to twist an ankle, or worse, get lacerated.
As she walked, she had finally gotten caught, even though Aayla had tried to let the rest walk ahead for that very reason; the sticky feel of a spider web sticking to her face. She stopped immediately, closing her eyes and picking it from her eye; both hands did a quick sweep of her hair from the top of her head, then she looked down at herself,
"Ugh!" shivering visibly for a moment before moving to catch up. It was all okay, even the walk while eventually tiring wasn't too much of a problem; but... Dammit the insects.
The Padawan glared at her parents. "Don't you start fussing, too." She then recalled something that she'd seen on the way up and made her way closer to Slip. "Bro, did you have any hallucinations on the way up? Because I could've sworn I saw a girl just like me, but with yellow eyes and a lightsaber on her belt. She had different clothes, too."
As their journey began, Caedyn took up the rear of the group in order to make sure no one fell behind, his way of giving Master Rathe some support and doing his part. The mood of the Jedi Knight was in great standing, being truly pleased to be spending the time in the open out-doors with no other duties needing tending to, or assignments where he needed to deal with the worst the Galaxy had to offer, simply walking their path through life in such flourishing splendour.
Despite its beauty, however, Kashyyyk could be a dangerous place for those who knew not what they were doing. Most world's in fact, for not just the needs of the individual, had to be considered but the wildlife and any potentially dangerous flora. Simply rubbing up against the wrong plant could leave a rash in places most uncomfortable when needing to travel so far on foot.
Looking over the line of students, Caedyn couldn't help but smile to himself. They weren't a large group but there was a benefit in that too, a more close-knit assembly for the duration of their stay in the wilds. He didn't know them all too well, recognizing a couple though some not at all. Risen of course had served alongside Caedyn in several missions and within the Silver Rest but the Jedi Knight was looking forward to getting to know them all a little better when they were camped up and able to let their guard down.
Looking at each of the people there who were, Jasper notices one of the people here them carrying a bag of items which made the young Jasper a bit relieved. He had and still has no intentions of interacting with the others while trying to survive out here in the wilds of Kashyyyk. He admittedly figured that some of the other students of the class would be coming into this lesson empty-handed with no forms of items that would be considered useful for survival. Granted, a small part of him will admit that he did thought there would be some people carrying survival items. But the other bigger part of him that believes that the other students would have nothing for survival but the clothes on them, outweighed the smaller part of him.
It just seemed to make sense to Jasper in his mind after careful thought. This was a survival class focusing on the one thing he thought this class was about: SURVIVAL (or at least surviving out in the wilds). He thought that most of the people who decided to participate in this lesson would not have anything that would be useful, and would that use either what they were going to learn from the teacher, or what probably small information they had on surviving out here. In a way, he was right to a point, while looking at each of the people here he did not notice most of them seemingly having anything of value when it comes to survival. He did not know-how about what was inside the bag that the one was carrying, but Jasper safely assumed that, since this was a survival class, there was something in there that would be useful to him when it comes to survival. Jasper himself realized that bringing the items inside the bag somewhat defeated the purpose of learning to survive while he was packing, but he did not like the idea of not bringing any gear with him on this lesson. He wanted some form of control on how he was going to learn how to survive going into this class despite realizing the possibility that the teacher would not like the fact that that he brought gear with him.
He felt like he needed it for reasons he didn’t want to give into it.
Jasper had a feeling that bringing any rations or food was not going to be allowed in this class, so he never brought any with him. He was thankful for that as he watched the other students here get rid of anything that would consider food to eat. He felt that someone was going to try their best to investigate his bag and see what inside it. He just…felt something like that would happen. Looking over to the one teaching this class, he wondered what he was going to teach after hearing him speak once more, he wondered what these Matukai people were and if he should gain information on them. He kept the thought in the back of the mind as he began to follow the rest of the group into the forest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jasper was thankful he took mental notes of understanding how different force techniques worked well he walked alongside the others for hours on end. He made sure to be right near the back of the line of the group so he could keep an eye on everyone. he had considered Bing near the middle of the line in the group did not like the idea of people behind him unless it was necessary. When Jasper grew tired of going through his mental notes he tried to calculate different possibilities of what type of skills of hiking hunting and tracking that he and the others will be learning. Hunting and tracking he felt would be the most useful to him since they were somewhat connected to what he wanted to do in his life. As for hiking, he was indifferent to it. He was not really but he knew there was a form of certainty that hiking was going to be involved in the survival class. He made certain to stay silent not really showing any form or evidence of exhaustion which was easier said than done considering the heat that was affecting him a bit. Still, he carried on making sure he was not seen as the weakest of the group.
"Oh, good! I suppose you won't have to worry too much about it then" he said, offering Aayla a smile. Throwing a glance down the cliffside, he smirked "And if we get really desperate, we do know where to find something to eat" It was a joke, of course - for while there were plenty of food which had just been tossed, he doubted that Risen would be very keen on allowing them to go down there and retrieve it.
The large Padawan then listened in silence as The Knight spoke, laying out the ground rules and making a scheme of what they would do during the trip. While Mathieu wasn't too fond of restrictions, they did not seem like ones which would take away from the camping experience, and with that intact, he was relatively satisfied.
When their walk begun, it seemed like a rather large party wanted to stay by the back with the second Knight, Caedyn, at the very end of the line to watch over the others and both Jasper and Aayla staying somewhere by the back too. The others were ahead of him, putting Mathieu by the middle of the line. In the past, he had taken the same position as Caedyn had but with the Knight here, it would not be necessary.
Staying to learn a thing or two from time to time was satisfying. It seemed to be a rather mixed bag of different instructions and tips. Some of it felt basic for the Morellian who had spent much time outdoors, both because he enjoyed it in itself and out of necessity during a few missions. Other areas they touched upon were new - the Matukai techniques which were taught were most interesting and something which he might be able to put to use in the future. It had particularly been an interest of his after his fight with a Sith on the muddy world of Jabiim.
Most of those present seemed to be doing well. While he didn't look, judging by the sounds of it, Aayla was having trouble with some insects. Jasper didn't sound tired. But then his eyes went to Kuxirra. How she had been able to keep up for so long in the state that she was in was a wonder in itself. Picking up his pace to catch up with her, he looked down to her ankle. His eyes ventured up to meet hers "Kuxirra?" he asked, looking at her as if the question was obvious. "You know you can always rely on us, right? Even if we can't stop, maybe you can hop onto my back for a while or at least lean on us and not put too much pressure on it"
Remembering Wildflowers
The group was performing admirably. Some betrayed their exhaustion more than others — though all showed small hints, irrepressible — but all were pressing on without complaint, even as Risen drove on past noon to test their mettle.
At last, they came to a place he’d scouted before: a glade along the riverbed, shaded but for filaments of light which broke through the treeline. A beautiful place, chosen to preserve morale.
Risen broke stride for the first time in hours. Six, at a guess. He did an about-face at the clearing’s edge, allowing a few minutes of silence for the students to catch their breath. Catching Caedyn’s eye, he nodded in appreciation for pulling up the rear of the march.
“We’ll make midday camp here,” Risen announced. “The surrounding hundred yards or so should be safe for foraging. Pair off and gather anything you think safe to eat — nuts, seeds, roots, fruits, flowers.” He stepped over to the riverbed, looking across the students and driving his weapon into the ground to emphasize his next point. “Bring me anything you find. I’ll inspect it and make sure it’s safe to eat.”
Then he sat and put his calloused hands to building a fire, preparing for a lesson on water treatment. As the others set out for this next task, Risen scanned the surroundings.
Claw marks across the stone. Whispers of spiderweb in the treeline. Distantly, across the river, a flash of eyes.
Nature held life — nothing to be done. He returned to his task, accepting that his students would need to remain alert. Come what may.
