A holorecording was sent in reply to Caragach's Promise and Ultimatum, Matthew of Valendale extends an invitation to diplomatic talks on behalf of the Farworlds Alliance.Matthew of Valendale sat behind his desk, long white hair resting against the dark folds of his cloak and prismatic wings gathered at his back. A tiny, feathered creature with a feline body, curved beak, and soft owl-like ear tufts had caught the edge of his cloak between its foreclaws tearing at it with viscous glee. Matthew gently loosened its grip, lifted it into the shelter of one arm, and cradled it against his chest before turning his blue eyes toward the recorder.
"An ultimatum leaves precious little room for understanding, yet I do not believe that room has vanished entirely.
Are questions of sovereignty, cultural autonomy, forced labor, and humanitarian responsibility truly best answered through accusations exchanged across the Holonet?
Perhaps much of what divides us has grown from distance and uncertainty. If so, neither will be remedied by watching one another through the sights of warships.
I extend an invitation to the Caragachi Commonwealth to appoint a diplomatic delegation and meet with representatives of the Farworlds Alliance. The Commonwealth may propose neutral ground, bring its legal scholars and cultural authorities, and present specific concerns regarding the Alliance Charter. Those whose lives are directly affected by the policies under discussion should also be afforded a voice.
As a gesture of good faith, I ask the Commonwealth to halt any further advance of its Fourth Fleet while arrangements are made. Observation need not become provocation, and caution need not become conflict.
The Commonwealth claims that it seeks peace. The Farworlds Alliance was founded so that distant peoples might determine their futures without standing beneath the burden of tyrannical oppression. These principles need not bring our governments to war unless we decide, before ever sharing a table, that understanding is impossible.
Let us speak plainly, listen carefully, and determine whether this disagreement must truly be settled by fleets."
