- Long-lasting
- Increased projection range and durability over prior models.
- Army of Light: The ZRB produces solid-state holographic droids, which are capable of interacting with physical objects, firing weapons, and harming enemies.
- Reinforcement Point: The ZRB can quickly replenish "destroyed" holograms, and can continue to do so as long as the central bulb remains intact.
- Head of the Snake: Should the ZRB's central bulb be destroyed, all currently active holodroids will immediately vanish.
- Short Leash: Holodroids cannot venture beyond a set radius from their central projector.
Among Helix's more esoteric technologies, solid-state holograms have nonetheless enjoyed wide use among the organization. With the advent of the early, crude KLK model, entire voidships and garrisons were soon staffed entirely by these translucent, ghostly droids.
The ZRB is a next-generation, mass-deployed improvement on the base concept, offering several advantages over its experimental forbear.
In appearance, the ZRB resembles a smooth Helglass orb, small enough to fit comfortably in human hands. It is most often wired into stationary power grids aboard starships or in ground installations, though it can also be hooked up to KRB reactors for a hastily-assembled instant garrison.
When in operation, the ZRB produces a number of translucent blue holodroids. In most cases these resemble (and are statwise identical to) B1-HL infantry models. Unlike typical holograms, however, these apparitions are quasi-independent, thinking entities. What's more, each is composed of extremely dense photons, allowing it to operate machinery, patrol areas, crew weapons and starship consoles, or otherwise interact with its environment.
Typically, these droids come armed with ghostly versions of the B1-HL's standard armaments, allowing them to fire on and harm hostile forces as a normal, solid metal droid would.
The military applications are endless. A single bulb with sufficient power can garrison a small outpost, and several can populate a sizeable military installation.
This approach offers several advantages over simply automating these positions, as the holodroids can defend themselves from attack, react to changing circumstances, and repair damaged systems, all while slashing logistics costs across the board.
Should they come under attack, the holodroids themselves are resilient (approximately as much so as their physical counterparts) but can be destroyed with sufficient firepower. A destroyed hologram visibly bursts into scattered light particles, but will often quickly be replaced by the central bulb. So long as the bulb remains powered and intact, it can continue to produce these expendable reinforcements indefinitely, at least up to the maximum number its particular power source can sustain at once.
Of course, as they are created and sustained by this central bulb, it poses an obvious weak point. Should the bulb lose power or be destroyed, all droids it is currently projecting will immediately be dispersed.
Likewise, the holograms cannot venture beyond a set distance from the bulb (some 600-700 meters depending on power supply), nor can they fire upon any target outside of this radius.
The droids themselves are aware of this weakness, and will attempt to defend their lifeline to the best of their ability.
