HIERARCHY

GENERAL INFO:
With the exception of the Council of 4 judges, all ranks are subdivided into 3 ranks: Junior, Standard, and Senior (IE. Junior Justicar, Justicar, and Senior Justicar). Ranks are also divided between two branches being Military and Civil (a Military Justicar would primarily be concerned with external threats like a modern military, but a Civil Justicar would handle criminal activity much like a police officer). When referring to a member of the Zheng'yu by their rank you would generally choose to call them by their rank and branch or their rank and seniority (IE a Military Justicar or a Junior Justicar, as opposed to saying a Military Junior Justicar). All members of the Zheng'yu wear multiple hats in addition to their civil and military responsibilities. As an example, each Justicar (or Adjutant, or Advocate), regardless of branch, serves as a common judge (not to be mistaken for the rank of judge) as well as a member of the grand council (similar to a parliament or congressional body). This has several ramifications for governance. One is that a Justicar can hold an informal trial whenever they please, so they can quite literally serve as judge, jury, and executioner. Another is that when grand council is called, members of the Zheng'yu are often out on assignments. This means that the Council of 4 judges has even more legislative power than it would initially seem since a significant portion of the 3,000 members will be absent performing various tasks.

JUDGE: At the top of the Zheng'yu sits the much revered council of 4 Judges. Each judge is guardian over one of the 4 cardinal needs of the people, being the Military Judge, the Civil Judge, the Spiritual Judge, and the Grand Judge. Of these, the Grand Judge leads the council of 4 judges by providing general wisdom and guidance (though, on a normal basis, the other three judges will serve as the primary guiding voice for decisions in their specialties).

JUSTICAR: A Justicar represents the highest rank among the normal operating body of the Zheng'yu. They are able to execute any portion of their duties without guidance or oversight. Justicar's are both feared and idolized among the general population, often depending on where you live or what you believe. Justicars also tend to be exceptional combatants, tacticians, and scholars. Their control of The Divine Light is rivaled only by the Council of 4 Judges.

ADJUTANT: The Adjutants are the rank and file of the Zheng'yu. Their word is respected, but their decisions are subject to the guidance and oversight of the Justicars. Adjutants tend to be capable combatants and well educated, but there are certainly exceptions to this rule depending upon their roles and responsibilities. Their control of the Divine Light is formidable, but often doesn't hold a candle to the breadth of understanding in a high ranking Justicar.

ADVOCATE: The advocates are grunts and hopefuls at the bottom of the Zheng'yu. They cannot execute orders on their own, and instead perform their work under the close watch and instruction of an Adjutant. Advocate tend to be acceptable combatants with an above average education. Their control of the Divine Light is respectable, but wholly uninspiring. A special rank of Advocate exists in the form of an Advocate Prodigy. A prodigy is an Advocate who has shown to be exceptional in their control of the Divine Light in comparison to their peers and, as such, is put under direct guidance of a Justicar. Often Prodigies will move directly from the position of Advocate to being a member of the Justicars.
