- Legally-obtained Checkmates come with licenses assuring police that the holder is not, in fact, an assassin. Probably.
- One Shot, One Kill: Despite its size, the Checkmate's shots are as potentially deadly as those of any rifle-sized disruptor.
- My Littlest Friend: Palm-sized and designed to fool most weapon detectors, the Checkmate is perfect for "self-defence".
- One Shot, One Kill: The Checkmate fires once and only once per power cell - better make it count.
- Pocket Incinerator: Any rate of fire faster than two-to-four shots a minute will cause overheating.
Among the most dubious weapons ever produced by Globex's Experimental Armaments Division (ExAD), the Checkmate was designed for perfectly legal uses like defending private individuals from the very real threat of singular powersuit-wearing assailants, the fact that the weapon is banned in Globex's own colonies and facilities should be seen more as proof of the efficacy of the Globex Security Division than any nefarious design decision.
Wholly against the wishes of its nigh-on-saintly designers, the Checkmate has seen some limited use by spies, assassins, and other scoundrels. The internal GSD investigation into the business dealings of ExAD is, of course, an entirely unrelated matter.
