STANDARD FEATURES
All standard features. The satellite has the whole standard array of shields, communications and systems that are commonly associated with a station of its size and class. Also features standard docking bays and standard escape pods. It also features a medical facility, including a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and a working Surgical Suite plus Bacta tanks.

ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Command and control. The satellite has all the equipment to enable tactical and logistical officers to alert the troops on the ground about enemy movements, ensure they are well-supplied and coordinate operations. Moreover, it features potent surveillance equipment and a full spectrum sensor package to monitor communications and traffic and carry out in-depth scanning. Thus it is well-equipped to serve as an orbital HQ and provide logistical and intelligence assistance. The weapons can be synced to laser designators on the ground. Heavily armoured, the satellite can endure a good deal of punishment.
  • Equipped with stealth technology, which enables it to cloak itself when it has to operate in hostile airspace. It has also has various other items that make it difficult, though not impossible, to track when the cloaking device is not active.
WEAKNESSES
  • Low armaments for a station. The station is a satellite whose main purpose is communication and battlefield coordination. Its main armaments are some defence guns and a few precision orbital strike cannons. The latter are there to carry out precision strikes on the ground, say for anti-tank use, though not to level a city block or big building. The satellite is heavily armoured, but only has a limited ability to fire back on attackers.
  • The Stygium Stealth Array is powerful, but Stygium-cloaked vessels need to decloak to fire. Thus, any time the satellite fires at someone, it has to decloak briefly. Moreover, the Stygium stealth array is power-hungry, so it cannot be active all the time. An active cloaking device will draw away power from the shields while in use. With all the broadcasting it will be doing, its stealth will help but it is definitely more likely to be found than your typical stealth vessel. The point is to avoid it being traced immediately and for it to have a way to avoid potential enemy fire when its location has been compromised.
  • Automation. While the satellite houses guards and technical staff as well as the tactical and logistical officers needed for battlefield coordination, a lot of it is automated and the crew is not large. This can leave it more vulnerable to intrusion.
DESCRIPTION

The Watchtower Class Command Satellite was designed by Firemane to perform the functions of an orbital HQ and service station. Essentially, it is a satellite with the tactical and logistical officers needed for battlefield coordination, a ton of communication equipment, and a few precision orbital strike cannons. It serves as a mobile HQ rather than a base and supports command, control and communications (C3) as well as Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR). Its biggest armaments are comparatively small scale though - good for anti tank use, but not for levelling buildings or city blocks. They are synced to laser designators on the ground.

The idea is that a platoon will have a tactical officer while in combat to alert them of nearby enemy movements, allies in need of assistance, incoming strikes near them, all that battlefield stuff as 'control' which would be advisory for officers in the field. Furthermore, the Watchtower provides them with 'command' to issue them objectives and it can quickly relay information to other commands, say when a formation requires supplies, fire support and so on.

The station features a mission control centre, which includes a fully equipped Operations Room. This is in many ways the heart of the satellite, where the bulk of the personnel stationed aboard work. The officers stationed here can communicate with ground commanders, starfighter and bombing squadrons, task forces in space and so on. Using live satellite feeds, the tactical coordinators can get data about the situation the ground troops are dealing with and provide updates to allied forces in real time. This ensures that central command as well as the leaders n the field are alerted about advancing enemy troops, enemy fortifications, troop movements and so on, enhancing coordination on the battlefield as well as the theatre level. This also allows for greater precision when conducting artillery or orbital strikes or directing air support. The process is assisted by a Battle Analysis Computer.

Enlightenment Communicators are often installed to ensure secure communications, as the messages sent by these quantum communicators are transmitted instantly and cannot be intercepted. However, the messages are text-based only and each device can only be paired with one other device. This also means that since the satellite acts as a central hub, it must have banks of these consoles, one for every destination to connect. Stage 2 is preferred since it requires less space.

Furthermore, the Watchtower can be supported by drones such as the Nemesis. These can enhance coordination by providing it with tactical data. In effect, the satellite acts as the eye in the sky. Because it may have to operate in hostile air space and only has limited armaments, the satellite is equipped with a cloaking device. It is fairly powerful, but cannot be active all the time due to power requirements.

Equipped with potent surveillance equipment and a full spectrum sensor package to monitor communications and traffic and carry out in-depth scanning as well as serve as a listening post. Naturally this tech is helpful for conducting surveillance on the planet beneath the satellite. The satellite provides very good sensor resolution and range and can network with other satellites to increase its range. It can use the information it receives from the ground troops or gathers itself to provide allied forces, in space, air and on the ground with targeting data and the like. Hiridiu crystals boost the satellite's communications signals. For its type, the satellite is well-armoured and has heavy shielding, though its capability to fire back on attackers is limited.

The satellite has a high degree of automation. This reduces manpower requirements, though it still retains an organic crew, but also leaves more open to intrusion, especially if the cloaking device is not functional. It does have armaments to protect itself againt small craft, missiles and the like, but a dedicated assault is another question. The satellite features a fully functional medical facility. It has a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) and a working Surgical Suite plus Bacta tanks. It can deploy the MASH unit as needed and then have severe wounded shipped up to it for proper treatment. The satellite features docking pods for ships to dock at to unload cargo, personnel and so on.

While the Watchtower has a stealth suite, it operates under certain limitations. The typical limitations of all steach technology aside, with all the broadcasting the satellite will be doing, its stealth will help but it is definitely more likely to be found. At least it shouldn't be traced immediately. The stealth system is largely to be used in emergencies. The idea is that the Watchtower would be deployed over planets where Firemane has achieved some space superiority, even if not total control, or worlds where ground bases might be difficult or take too long to set up. Ground bases can be assaulted regularly, whereas a satellite with stealth would be relatively safe and thus a good place to set up command, control and communications infrastructure.
