Judah Lesan Jr. had learned a long time ago that there were messages worth answering immediately.

The one concerning Malcoma had qualified.

Word that she had been found had reached him with few useful details attached. There had been enough to know she was alive, enough to know she had been taken somewhere capable of treating her, and nowhere near enough to satisfy any of the questions that naturally followed. JJ had spent the better part of the trip trying not to fill the gaps himself. Cambria had trained that habit into him years ago. Work with what you knew. Do not let assumptions become facts simply because you disliked uncertainty.

That particular lesson was easier to remember when somebody else's family was involved.

The hospital rose ahead of them in clean lines of transparisteel and duracrete, all carefully controlled lighting and polished surfaces that seemed designed to convince visitors nothing truly terrible could happen inside. JJ had never liked hospitals much. There was something about the quiet efficiency of them that reminded him of military casualty stations, places where everyone spoke softly because somewhere nearby somebody was receiving news they would remember for the rest of their life.

Still, Malcoma was alive.

That mattered more than anything else.

JJ slowed as they approached the entrance, adjusting the strap of the worn flight jacket he had thrown on before leaving. He had considered arriving in something that looked more recognizably Jedi and decided against it almost immediately. Malcoma did not need a Jedi walking into her room looking like he had arrived to conduct an official inquiry, and Sonti certainly did not need one standing beside her.

Besides, JJ had never been particularly good at looking official unless somebody handed him armor.

His saber remained beneath the jacket at his hip, unobtrusive but close enough that years of Guardian training would have objected if he had left it elsewhere. The weapon went where he went. Cambria had drilled that into him just as thoroughly as posture, discipline, and the unfortunate expectation that a Jedi Master should occasionally behave like one.

His father had apparently missed several of those lessons.

The thought pulled the faintest trace of amusement across JJ's face before disappearing again.

"I know this probably isn't how you wanted to find out she was back," he said, keeping his attention on the entrance ahead rather than looking toward Sonti. "But she's here. She's alive."

That was as much reassurance as he was willing to manufacture.

JJ had no intention of telling Sonti that everything was going to be fine. He did not know that. Nobody did. Empty assurances were cheap, and he had spent too much of his life around soldiers to mistake them for comfort. What he could do was get Sonti through the doors and to Malcoma's room.

Hopefully that would do more for Mal than anything he could say.

The doors parted before them.

Inside, JJ handled the necessary questions with the practiced patience of someone who had dealt with enough military checkpoints, customs officials, port authorities, and Jedi administrators to know when charm worked better than rank. There was still something unmistakably Corellian in the easy confidence with which he carried himself, despite Cambria's best efforts to train the worst of it away. A crooked half-smile here, a polite word there, just enough personality to keep bureaucracy moving without turning the entire thing into an argument.

He resisted the temptation to mention that he could probably have flown them through the hospital's emergency landing corridor and saved everyone the trouble.

Cambria would have sensed the thought from several systems away and been disappointed.

Eventually, they were directed toward the proper ward.

JJ's demeanor shifted almost imperceptibly as they moved deeper into the hospital. The casual confidence remained, but the soldier beneath it surfaced. His eyes tracked doors, intersections, staff stations, and room numbers without conscious effort. It was not suspicion so much as habit. Guardians were trained to know their surroundings. Pilots did much the same thing with approach vectors and escape routes. JJ had simply developed the unfortunate tendency to do both everywhere he went.

When they finally reached Malcoma's room, he stopped outside.

For the first time since they had arrived, JJ looked directly toward Sonti.

He had brought her because he hoped seeing her would help Malcoma. Maybe that was naive. Malcoma was not exactly the sort of woman JJ imagined being restored by flowers, warm blankets, and cheerful company.

Sonti was different.

Sonti was hers.

That seemed worth something.

JJ reached for the door control, then paused before activating it.

"No pressure," he said quietly. "We go in. We see her. That's it."

There was no lecture behind the words and no attempt to tell Sonti what she should feel when the door opened. JJ knew better than that. He could get her here. Whatever came next belonged to her and Malcoma.

His thumb touched the control.

The door slid open, and Judah Lesan Jr. stepped through with the kind of measured confidence Cambria had spent years teaching him, leaving just enough of the Corellian underneath to make it his own.

"Malcoma?"

JJ's eyes found the bed.

A small, crooked smile finally returned.

"Hope you don't mind visitors."

Sonti followed either behind or beside JJ when space provided in her hoverchair. Though she could normally walk even long distances on her own, the mobility aide was necessary whenever her childhood injury flared up.

On good to neutral days, she felt no shame in it. Why wouldn't she use a tool that made tasks easier? The original Jedi could have chosen any other weapon but lightsabers for the traditional carry if they wanted peacekeepers to struggle, but instead they selected blades that could cut through durasteel among other things like warm butter.

And that decision didn't negate the Jedi's collective honor.

But on especially bad days, navigating in her hoverchair made her feel a bit less like a Jedi, if she was honest—not that she was ready to tell JJ that.

Yoda used one a millennium ago, yes, but Sonti was neither that short nor that old. So she still felt the way she did.

Mal glanced up from a book as she heard the door swish open. "JJ," she greeted, a small smile gracing her slightly sallow face. When his blue-haired padawan floats into the room after him, her eyes brightened another shade. "Sonti. Come here, sweet thing."

She didn't need to be invited twice; she went to Mal's bedside, both women leaning towards the other for a hug. If Mal could reach him, and unless he moved away, sought his hand to hold for a moment with one of hers, the other left cradling Sonti's back.

Sonti pulled back from the embrace. "What happened?!" she asked.

Mal's initial reply didn't answer the question directly. "I shouldn't have stayed on Coruscant for as long as I did." Her remaining fingers lightly squeezed around Sonti's hand, though her new prosthetic barely followed suit. Controlling it was more difficult than she imagined. "Galactic City and I have weathered quite a few storms. I got caught up in this one." A wry smile touched her lips, chapped, scabby, and slightly bruised. "I managed to get free, with the help of an old friend—you remember Captain Rackham, Sonti—and a Jedi Master by the name of Efret Farr." Mal's blue gaze swept to JJ, unspokenly curious if he knew of her.

"I'm fortunate," she acknowledged with rare gratitude aimed at Wyn and Efret. "I'll be okay, but I can't imagine how Coruscant is ever going to recover from masters like the Sith Covenant."

Rare awareness and care for the larger picture, too.

Sonti shifted in her hoverchair. "What about the Family?"

"All I care about is my family," Mal intoned. "You and JJ are here. Your sisters and Damris are getting along just fine on Denon. The only one unaccounted for is..." She looked again to JJ. "...Judah."

A few silent moments passed the trio by.

"Efret—" Mal began and immediately stopped herself. She rose her other hand into the air. "She told me to call her that. For once in my life, I'm not being disrespectful. Efret told me that he had been captured by a powerful Sith. At Woostri, I assume." The last part was an educated guess on her part. She remembered Judah mention the planet the last time they had talked.

“There are rumors the Sith are going to strike at Woostri. I have to go.”

"Any news?" she asked, the question directly mostly at JJ. A strange thread of defeat was woven through the headmistress' voice.

JJ's eyes settled briefly on the prosthetic when Malcoma mentioned being fortunate.

That was one way of putting it.

He did not interrupt the reunion, content to remain where he was while Sonti stayed close to Malcoma's bedside. There would be time for questions once the two of them had their moment. When Mal finally looked his way and asked about Judah, however, JJ's expression changed.

He shook his head.

"No."

The single word carried more weight than he wanted it to.

"Nothing since Efret saw him taken."

JJ's jaw tightened. He had checked what could be checked and asked the questions that could be asked. None of it mattered once the trail disappeared behind the Blackwall. Whatever had become of his father was on the other side of something the rest of the galaxy could neither see through nor simply cross.

"If they took him through the Wall, that's it. We can't see past it. We don't know where he is, who has him, or what happened after Woostri."

He hated saying it aloud.

JJ was accustomed to problems that could be acted upon. Give him coordinates and he could fly there. Give him an enemy and he could fight them. Give him a person to find and there was usually some trail left behind.

The Blackwall offered none of those things.

His gaze lingered for another moment before JJ gave a small shake of his head, putting the frustration back where it belonged.

Then his attention returned fully to Malcoma.

"And you're avoiding Sonti's question."

A hint of the Corellian returned with the observation, though there was little amusement behind it. JJ gestured toward her with a slight movement of his chin.

"You got caught in a storm and an old friend helped you out doesn't explain that."

His eyes flicked toward the prosthetic before finding hers again.

"What happened to you, Mal?"
