Frego was not quite what Seris Velmora had expected. She had heard the stories, of course. A world where criminals had once wielded more influence than politicians, where syndicates operated almost openly, and where the population had developed a rather stubborn habit of resisting anyone who attempted to tell them what to do. The Sith Order had claimed the planet, but apparently claiming something and actually controlling it were two very different things. That was why they were here.
Their transport had deposited them at one of Frego's busier spaceports, leaving them to navigate the sprawling urban districts by rented speeder. Seris had insisted on driving, although whether that had been a wise decision was something Kaelen would have to judge for himself. The young Sith guided their vehicle into a descending traffic lane, following the navigation display toward one of the older districts. Above them, towers crowded together beneath a hazy sky, while elevated transit lines and pedestrian walkways crisscrossed the spaces between buildings. The farther they descended, the less natural light reached the streets. Seris loved it.
"Now this is interesting!" She flashed Kaelen an enthusiastic grin before returning her attention to the traffic ahead.
"You know, when they told us we were going to Frego, I was expecting something a little more... I don't know. Boring? Another planet full of people who hate the Sith and spend all their time complaining about it." She swerved around a sluggish cargo hauler, earning an irritated blast from its horn.
"But this place has character!"
There was also the rather curious matter of how they had received this assignment. The summons had arrived through channels Seris hadn't even known existed. No familiar signature, no recognizable authority, merely instructions to attend a private briefing. Their mysterious benefactor had appeared only as a shadowed holographic figure, voice distorted and identity carefully concealed. Whoever it was, they possessed enough authority to dispatch two Sith on a mission of considerable political importance.
More intriguingly, they had specifically requested
both Seris and Kaelen. That little detail had not escaped her attention.
"I'm still wondering how our mysterious friend knew about us," she remarked, giving Kaelen a sideways glance.
"I mean, it's not like we've been announcing that we're spending time together. Unless you've been bragging about me?" Her grin widened.
"Which, obviously, I would understand."
The teasing came easily, but beneath it was genuine curiosity. She wasn't particularly bothered that someone had taken an interest in their association. The Sith were always watching one another, weren't they? What mattered was whether that attention presented an opportunity. And this certainly did. The briefing had been remarkably straightforward. A resistance organization had entrenched itself within Frego's criminal underworld, conducting attacks against Sith interests and undermining the planetary administration. Previous attempts to dismantle the organization had failed, and its leadership was apparently preparing something considerably more ambitious.
With the Sith Order and the Covenant consolidating their power, the continued existence of such an organization had become unacceptable. Their instructions were to identify its leadership, eliminate its capacity to threaten Sith authority, and secure whatever intelligence might expose its supporters. How they accomplished those objectives had largely been left to their discretion. That was Seris's favorite part.
"Think about it, Kaelen. They could have sent soldiers. A whole company of them, probably. Or some terrifying Sith Lord who could flatten half the district just by getting annoyed." She laughed, clearly enjoying the mental image.
"Instead, they sent us! Two promising young Sith with good looks, exceptional talent, and absolutely impeccable judgment." Her expression turned mischievous.
"Well, at least one of us has impeccable judgment. I'll let you guess which."
The speeder slowed as they approached their destination. Their first lead was a freight broker operating out of a warehouse complex in the lower commercial district. According to the intelligence provided during their briefing, the broker had been moving shipments through channels suspected of supplying the resistance. Whether he was a willing participant or simply someone who asked too few questions remained uncertain. Either way, he was their best starting point.
Seris brought the speeder into a public parking area overlooking a narrow street lined with aging warehouses, repair shops, and establishments whose legitimate purposes were probably best left unquestioned. She powered down the engine but made no immediate move to climb out. Instead, she turned toward Kaelen, one arm resting casually against the steering controls.
"So here's what I'm thinking. We find our friendly neighborhood freight broker, have a nice conversation, and convince him that helping us is much better for his continued existence than helping a bunch of rebels." She tilted her head thoughtfully.
"Preferably without making too much of a mess. Apparently we're supposed to leave the planet in better condition than we found it." That earned an amused little snort.
"Which seems like a rather unreasonable restriction to put on a Sith mission, but whatever."
For a moment, her expression softened as she regarded him. There was something genuinely exciting about undertaking this assignment together. Not merely because it promised danger, although she certainly appreciated that, but because it was an opportunity to discover how well they worked as partners when something more consequential than their usual teasing was at stake. And she had every intention of making the most of it.
"Seriously, though, I'm glad they paired us together. This could be fun. Dangerous, probably, but definitely fun."
She leaned a little closer, lowering her voice conspiratorially.
"Besides, imagine how impressed everyone will be when we come back having cleaned up an entire resistance network. Maybe they'll even give us medals." A beat passed.
"Do Sith give medals? Because I think I'd look fantastic wearing one."
Seris laughed before glancing toward the warehouse district.
"Anyway, handsome, what do you think? We walk in and ask nicely, or do you have something a little more creative in mind?" She was already itching to get started, but she was equally curious to hear his thoughts. After all, if they were going to make a habit of getting into trouble together, she supposed they ought to learn how the other preferred to do it.
