TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Classification
: Torpedo
Size: Very Large
Weight: Very Heavy
Explosive Type: Chemical, incendiary
Delivery Method: Manually guided launch.
Effective Range: Average
Area Of Effect: Large
Damage Output: Very High

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Dual engine control. The slow and quiet move is the operational mode, the quick powerful burst engine the attack mode.
  • Person guided capabilities.
  • Near-silent running on operational mode.
  • Devastating damage potential when engaged into attack mode.
  • Only suitable for firing at ships or structures, too hard to aim at people.
STRENGTHS
  • Maritime warfare weapon. Torpedo can be used by the operators without a sub. It can be deployed miles away and they can approach the target without a ship, get in close and fire it, causing mayhem. The payload is very powerful.
  • Manufacturing and deploying the torpedo doesn't require sophisticated technology. It is designed to be made by insurgents who don't have much in the way of money or resources and are largely cut off from galactic commerce. It is cheap and simplistic, but effective.
WEAKNESSES
  • More useful for sabotage purposes than for targeting ships on high seas, as it would be too difficult to get into position. It is also too hard to aim at people.
  • If the crew is not able to bail out and make their getaway in time, they will unwillingly become martyrs for the revolutionary cause. In short, bad timing can make this a potentially suicidal weapon.
  • Not usable in space. It's for naval warfare that takes place in a battlespace with lots of water.
DESCRIPTION

Tephrike is a war-torn planet where the Dark Age never came to an end. Millions have died from disease, starvation and war ever since the outbreak of the Gulag Virus sent Tephrike spiralling into chaos.Cut off from the rest of the Galaxy and ravaged by the plague, the planet has experienced famine, isolation, technological regression and civil war. The Republican Guard is the sole guardian of the common man against the tyranny of the totalitarian Jedi theocracy called the Dominion of Light or the human supremacist slavocratic Disciples of the Vader. But freedom will not be won through speeches and majority decisions, but blood and iron. If it has to break a few eggs on the way to make an omelette, so be it.

The rebels lack the strong industrial basis of their foes and thus have to rely on asymmetrical warfare. However, they are particularly strong in all things aquatic warfare. This is no surprise since many members of aquatic species such as Mon Calamari, Nautolans, Quarrens and Gungans have joined their cause. Using technology that is simplistic and primitive by galactic standards but still efficient, the partisans have designed a torpedo for their frogmen to use to sink Vaderite and Dominion waterships.

The Trident Class Torpedo is a weapon of sabotage and underwater partisanism. Essentially, one has an about 10m long object which is mostly a powerful naval torpedo. In addition to its normal engines though it has several smaller, long burning and small exhaust motors designed to guide it into place. A low powered movement engine to get it into position directed by the crew who hang onto the sides...and then a big remote triggered motor which engages it, arms the warhead and sends it slamming into the hull of the target. Since aquatic beings will be using it they don't need to worry about breathing. For the same reason, the torpedo doesn't have a cockpit.

The idea is that they'd be dropped off by a mothership a fair way off and continue with it underwater on low power towards the target. Typically there is a crew of two to three people per torpedo. The low power of the motors should allow it to escape detection from all but the most sensitive of sensors in the calmest water. It can therefore be deployed and they can approach without a ship, get in close and fire it.

Once they get in close they line it up and activate the main engines. They'd then have maybe a minute to get to a safe distance before it 'fires' and slams into the target, hopefully sinking or disabling it. The crew can then hopefully get to safety and be retrieved...but it's a pretty dangerous assignment. If they do not get away in time, they are in trouble. But their sacrifice will be honoured in the coming republic. If successful, the operators will slip away in the chaos or be ready to 'assist' any of the enemy who fall into the water, usually with a knife or garote. Republican Guard high command insists on thorough training regimen because good frogmen are hard to come by and difficult to replace. It is a sabotage weapon, not a weapon for ships on the high seas, as that'd be too hard to get into position.
