Name: Torrential, a.k.a. MX-57049-1-Desh

Region: Wild Space
System: MX-57049, a.k.a. the Torrential system
Suns: MX-57049-Aurek, a midsize blue-tinted star
Orbital Position: 1 (only intact planet), habitable zone
Moons: A constantly shifting ring of rocky debris and incoming/outgoing comets
System Features: The MX-57049 system is highly unusual in its number of comets. Where a normal star system might have distant cometary formations like a Kuiper belt and/or an Oort cloud, the entire Torrential system is choked with swarms of inbound and outbound comets. Millennia of impacts have pounded most of the system’s few planets to rubble, forming rings and clouds of asteroids.
Coordinates: 5, 28
Rotational Period: 20 standard hours
Orbital Period: 280 local days

Class: Terrestrial
Diameter: ~10,000km
Atmosphere: Type II due to extreme humidity and intense bouts of rainfall
Climate: Tropical ocean through arctic ocean
Gravity: 0.8 standard
Primary Terrain: Ocean, with a deeply cratered and broken seabed.

Native Species: A variety of resilient single-celled aquatic lifeforms.
Immigrated Species: None, apart from the occasional research mission.
Primary Languages: None
Government: None
Population: Untold trillions of single-celled organisms. Occasionally a few dozen offworld scientists or smugglers.
Demonym: N/A
Major Imports: N/A
Major Exports: Scientific samples. A few comets and asteroids carry deposits or trace amounts of valuable but not ultra-rare compounds, such as ostrine, teniline, guerrerite, ethromite, alantium, mantium, lommite, kalonterium, and hexophilenine. Asteroid prospecting in the Torrential system is a serious gamble with a slim profit margin, unless some little independent ship strikes it big. The environment is too dangerous for high-efficiency industrial-grade prospecting or refinement, and the amounts in question are usually too diffused to make the effort worthwhile.

Affiliation: Outer Rim Coalition

Major Locations:
 • Orspoint - Perhaps the only consistently dry land on Torrential, Orspoint is a craggy little camp miles above the ocean. Centuries ago, a piece of another world collided with Torrential, and a chunk of its crust still protrudes at a bizarre angle. The planet’s constant tsunamis have smoothed the slopes of the gigantic, unnatural mountain, but only one wave in a thousand reaches high enough to endanger Orspoint. The camp comprises a few landing pads carved out of the peak, as well as caves where prefabricated shelters can be deployed. Orspoint is the occasional home of scientific expeditions or lost smugglers. As a result, one can often find waterlogged but edible supplies, abandoned instruments, and the occasional wrecked ship on the mountain’s gigantic slopes.

Culture: It’s a stressful life, visiting Torrential, even for a few days. Though a dedicated science ship or a good sensor operator can usually predict the next impact of a comet or a piece of a dead world, ‘usually’ isn’t ‘always.’ Even when no tsunami is due, constructive interference can combine aftershocks of previous waves and summon a new storm out of nowhere. Then there’s the endless rain, often muddy from vaporized seabed or comet-slush. Torrential is deeply unsafe, and you’d have to visit Dromund Kaas to find a gloomier world.

Technology: N/A

History: Torrential was first discovered by a lost scout fighter attached to Alec Rekali’s expedition through the Kathol Rift. The fighter’s Undergrounder pilot noted the presence of odd compounds in the system’s comets. After a collision, she was forced to put down for repairs on one of the few peaks high enough to escape the planet’s constant waves.

In the ensuing years, Kathol Republic scientists visited the comet-choked system more than once, expanding the pilot’s landing point into a functional base camp. The hyperspace explorer Jorus Merrill found the little camp a useful place to lie low, get some fresh air, and test his ships’ weatherproofing. Nobody happened to be on Torrential during the Akala Crises, a testament to the system’s irregular habitation.

Since the founding of the Outer Rim Coalition, Torrential has seen renewed interest, as it is located quite close to once-secret routes stolen from Sekalan navicomputers. Torrential is now a waypoint for ORC exploration of Wild Space, and its numerous comets can be a valuable source of water and rare elements. Still, the system’s extreme danger makes it almost useless for fleet operations or conventional industry.

Notable PCs: None

Intent: A cool little place to put in that hex once Sekalus is gone.

Links: Torrential’s immense clouds of comets were partially inspired by the Abafar System.
