Lux in Tenebris

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: Establishing an In-universe version of the Citizens' Fleet to support the Jedi in future stories and events, with my own little spin.
- Image Credit: Edited image originating here.
- Canon: Inspired by the Citizens' Fleet.

- Links: How Liberty Dies - GE Invasion of GA Held Coruscant, Galactic Imperial Society, Sith Imperial Government
- Organization Name: The Spare Fleet
- Classification: Paramilitary/ Civilian Defense Organization, Partisan, Humanitarian
- Affiliation: Loyal to the Galactic Alliance and sympathetic to Jedi-led initiatives.
- Organization Symbol: A stylized moth, wings spread in flight, often depicted in silver or white against dark backgrounds.
- Description: The Spare Fleet is a mobile, decentralized paramilitary force dedicated to resisting Sith/Imperial expansion and other aggressors, their forces largely drawn from ordinary civilian volunteers from across the galaxy. They are capable of supporting larger military operations by major powers like the Galactic Alliance or High Republic, engaging in skirmishes, conducting smuggling and partisan operations in occupied areas, and protecting civilians.
- Headquarters: As a mobile decentralized organization, it doesn't have a particular fixed planet or location. Instead its main headquarters is situated on a refurbished Battlecruiser known as The Silver Age.
- Domain: The Spare Fleet isn't tied to any single planet or sector, given its self-imposed galaxy spanning mandate. However, it does maintain a special focus on the Core Worlds, the current flashpoint of the Great Core War between the Galactic Alliance and the Galactic Empire. The fleet is deeply connected to the worlds in which it operates, drawing volunteers and resources from local populations and supplementing local security forces where possible.
- Notable Assets:
- Refitted civilian freighters and shuttles equipped with weapons systems and electronic warfare suites.
- Donated warships and starfighters from reserve fleets and company back-catalogues.
- Mobile command vessels (often modified cruisers or star destroyers) serving as tactical hubs and small workshops.
- Hierarchy: The fleet's organization is inspired by both merchant and naval fleets, combining logistical efficiency, adaptability, and supply-chain management with the discipline and tactical coordination of a military force. The Spare Fleet is commanded at the highest level by the Fleet Admiral, who sets overall strategy, policy, and major operational directives. Supporting the Fleet Admiral is an Admiralty Council, a rotating body consisting of veteran commanders, engineers, logistics leads, civilian representatives, and Jedi who provides guidance, mediates disputes, and approves large-scale resource allocations.
Combat vessels are temporarily organized into ad-hoc Task Groups (TGs), mission-focused units led by Commodores. TGs further break down into cells, roughly squadron or flotilla-sized, led by Commanders. Individual ships are commanded by Captains supported by a cadre of officers and cross-trained crews handling engineering, gunnery, piloting, and medical duties.
Starfighter and Marine forces operate within TGs and cells. Starfighter squadrons, led by Wing Commanders, conduct strikes, escorts, reconnaissance, and interdiction. Marine units, led by Brigadiers, handle boarding, ship security, and planetside operations such as raids and securing landing zones, organized into companies and battalions led by Marine Captains. Both maintain autonomy while integrating with fleet objectives. - Membership: The Spare Fleet draws upon tens of thousands of civilian volunteers and military veterans from across the galaxy, though a disproportionate amount hail from the Core regions now occupied by the Galactic Empire. Acceptance into the fleet requires a demonstrated commitment to active resistance, basic competency in piloting, martial arts, or technical support, and adherence to noble ideals like liberty and equality. New recruits will undergo a background check, as well as a probationary period or field training to prove their aptitude, skill, and resolve before being assigned to operational units.
- Climate: Cooperative but decentralized; high trust among members with informal camaraderie.
- Reputation: Respected and admired by Light Side factions and local civilian populations where they operate. Many consider the Spare Fleet a symbol of hope and civilian empowerment. If ever acknowledged by Sith/Imperials, then they are seen as an unpredictable nuisance and subversive symbol of defiance that threatens their totalitarian regimes.
- Curios: Members often wear a small insignia in the shape of a moth, sometimes as a pin, patch, or painted sigil on their ship's hull. (On clandestine operations like smuggling runs or partisan activities, these symbols and markings are usually hidden or scrubbed.)
- Rules:
- Defend civilian populations whenever possible.
- Avoid unnecessary escalation that endangers non-combatants.
- Maintain autonomy but support Alliance/Jedi/LS objectives.
- Goals:
- Protect civilians and neutral systems from Sith/Imperial domination and other violent incursions like slaver raids.
- Support Alliance/Jedi/LS operations wherever possible.
- Expand fleet capabilities via donations and salvaging/refitting ships.
- Serve as a symbol of resistance and hope to occupied and oppressed worlds.
Mykel Dawson: A Jedi Knight who was one of the catalysts of the formation of the Spare Fleet along with the civilian Captain Dovan Hugh (NPC). He currently serves on the Admiralty Council overseeing technology development, and occasionally leads operational units during important engagements.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Spare Fleet was born during the siege of Coruscant by the then newly formed Galactic Empire. While the planet ultimately fell, the resolve instilled by Jedi Knight Dawson's broadcast sparked a new wave of civilian resistance on Coruscant and beyond, fed up of being helpless bystanders as their worlds were constantly plundered and used as battlegrounds by oppressive conquerors. Civilians, freighter captains, and the remnants of shattered Core home defense forces later mobilized within the western reaches of Alliance space, contributing ships and crews to create a new civilian-led armada to fight alongside the strained GADF and New Jedi Order.
Operating as decentralized paramilitary force, the Spare Fleet relies on ingenuity, adaptive tactics, and volunteer commitment rather than conventional military doctrine. Their name, symbolized by the moth, reflects their humble beginnings: drawn to the light of hope despite danger, often small and overlooked, yet persistent and resilient in the face of overwhelming Imperial might.
