The Sins of the Father

Kay-Larr

Sphaera Tea Company Owner
Kay watched the video as it played out further. This was a real pickle. And as [member="Veiere Arenais"] had said earlier, it could backfire on them completely. They didn't need a scandal. Especially with her being the Chancellor of the newly formed Senate.

Her attention turned to [member="Darlyn Excron"] , already seeing the anger in him without even having to feel it. "Who else has pistols like that? Or who else would know about the markings?"

She looked to Veiere as he asked about [member="Macoda Haberon"] and shook her head. "Mac is...not available, no. He might be gone looking for Rae-Anna with Brad. Or tying up some loose ends, I don't know .."

Kay furrowed her brows as Veiere seemed to be under the impression that Darlyn was a womanizer. As far as she was aware, he hadn't been with anyone since he's been working for her. But she's not really one to pry into that sort of thing.

"I wonder if there is some way that we could...lay out a trap. Maybe use me as bait?" A dangerous suggestion, but it was an idea.

The good King [member="Veiere Arenais"] wasn't exactly making things better by insinuating what he chose with his line of questioning. The way his fingers curled up, as if trying to form a fist on the table, gave as much away. Still, he was keeping himself from having a fit of rage that broke anything, which given the ever deteriorating state of mind he was in was a miracle in itself. Still, he was clearly ready to grab this impostor by the throat and slam his head into the nearest heavy object if he could get his hands on the slimy good for nothing...

He did seem to calm down just a moment as [member="Lady Kay"] spoke up. "No, I wouldn't suggest using you for bait in the slightest. Personal vendettas aren't worth risking your safety over. Even so, we need to try and figure out the pirate's identity, if nothing else. He seems to be planning ahead, the vessel that was attacked had some valuables as its primary shipment, the sort of thing you could sell for quite a bit on the right markets but not something that will get you a big flag if you were found carrying around. Fine carpets and drapes, things like that. He doesn't seem to intend on being caught at all..."

That said there had to be a way to track him... "Perhaps we could stage a shipment. We'd have to keep the intent under wraps, but if a fair sized shipment of, say, valuable fine silks were to be transported, and the crates happened to also have tracking beacons stealthily hidden within them... we could possibly track him long enough to find at least the location of the seller."

Veiere's predisposition didn't come with hostility towards [member="Darlyn Excron"] nor the judgement of their collegue but rather his intent to keep an open mind in this investigation; it was an undeniable fact that their friend here had a knack for being overzealous in his emotions and general lack of restraint compared to those that Veiere commonly associated with. Darlyn was a good man yet often reacted to things rashly and was quick to anger, the passing remark made in skeptical passing was no exception to this trait Veiere often saw within him.

When [member="Lady Kay"] suggested that she be used as bait, Veiere turned to look at her with a short and pessimistic laugh, "Like hell..." He threw her a look of indifference towards the suggestion. One of them was in enough trouble as it were, the last thing they needed was to risk her safety and Veiere had all the right to be opposed to the idea. Not only was she his wife but so too was she the strongest applicant to fight against these claims laid out against Darlyn. As Supreme Chancellor and Queen of Commenor, her testimony if this were to all blow up into a court proceeding would no doubt be crucial in his defense unless otherwise found to conflict with the interests of the courts ruling.

"A small shipment of goods sounds suitable" Veiere agreed, offering a nod to Darlyn in conclusion, "we can arrange to have the shipping manifest point the transport in the direction of the Palace, make it appear as though we're seeking new goods for a redesign or some such. The notion of stealing from the heart of the capital should catch any thieves attention seeking to make a fair few credits. It's enough to provoke your attention at the least Darlyn, an insult to injury so to speak without biting into more than they can chew, at-least from their perspective...".

Kay sort of expected that [member="Darlyn Excron"] and [member="Veiere Arenais"] would object to her idea. But at least it got them thinking of what could work for a trap to ensnare the imposter. "I could order a bunch of fabrics from Cato Neimoidia. They have plenty of expensive and expensive looking fabrics that they'd love for me to purchase. Tracking chips, so long as they are very thin, could be interwoven into the fabric itself. We'd just have to have someone over there to do it. I could send one of Commenor's leading designers to do it, under the guise of shopping for the fabrics for my dresses. Then the designer could come back on another ship so that they'd not be at risk."

Hopefully they approved of that idea or at the very least could expand on it. Otherwise she might not have much to provide for this meeting, other than bearing witness to it.

Darlyn gave both [member="Lady Kay"] and [member="Veiere Arenais"] a small nod, that worked. A shipment of fabrics with the tracking chips sewn in. It was, a workable place to start. He took a deep breath, and slowly stood up straight, fixing his black robes. "We should see as well if we can get a microphone, or camera, hidden along with the tracking chips. I highly doubt our masked pirate wears his mask when he's all alone, and I'm rather interested in finding his identity. Of course I doubt we'll be able to do so, but this is the first step. If we can find some identifiers that clear me, even something simple, it will at least make it easier to investigate."

Not to mention he didn't like the sensation of having eyes watching him suspiciously, almost ready for him to make a wrong move. "Whatever we decide to do, we'll need to have someone ready to follow the signal once it diverts from its course here. I could easily do it myself if it falls under a calm enough time for paperwork, but something tells me at least one of us isn't too keen on that idea. So we'll need to figure something all three of us can agree on, and have you authorize everything Kay."
