SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Serene City of the Principality of Horizon's Crown (formal), The Serene City (formal, short), Serene City (informal)
  • Classification: Asteroid Colony
  • Location: The Crown, Horizon's Crown
  • Affiliation: Athriel
  • Population: Moderate
  • Demographics: Humans (Various) [95 %], Sephi [3%], Yuzzem [2%], Miscellaneous [>1%]. There is no strong feelings of xenophobia expressed by any of the present species as the vast majority are refugees simply looking for a safe place to call home. Familial tensions are the main source of inter-species conflict. There are growing sentiments of Sephi Supremacy especially among the Sephi who view their shared demographic with the Prince as indicative of their own intrinsic worth. Despite this the official stance of the city and the Prince is that all species are equal under the domes of the city.
  • Wealth: Medium: The city houses mostly refugees and a handful of enterprising merchants so the relative wealth of the individual is low compared to many other cities, however as trade increases so does the wealth of the city.
  • Stability: High: On the surface the order and stability of the city is almost Utopian with anything more severe than petty theft unheard of. This stability is enforced by the strict guidance of Athriel who holds the majority of the power over governance and offers only obedience or exile.
  • Freedom & Oppression: Personal freedom is high in consideration to the rest of the galaxy with the denizens being unhindered in expressions of themselves and their various cultures. Political freedom is just as rare as crime within the city as there is only one despotic ruler who claims the title Prince of Horizon's Crown. Prince Athriel is the center of political and economic power and while he does not intervene in the personal lives of his subjects (outside of judicial issues and large disputes) his wrath for those who breach his peace is consistently remorseless. Between the libertarian social freedoms and the authoritarian political restrictions is an expectation of loyalty to the Prince and an understanding (true or not) that Athriel wants the best for his people and his people want to show gratitude for fair rulership. Possession of arms is limited to holdout blasters and traditional bladed weapons that are not technologically enhanced (field generators, vibrocells, etc).
  • Description: From above the city is a hexagon of large domes capped by arrays of antenna, which are connected at the base by short surface tunnels, at the center of the hexagon is a singular dome which is directly connected to each other dome. Each dome is uniform in its burnished durasteel outer shell. Each dome is a Habitation Dome which contains an artificial biosphere compete with an artificial atmosphere that is Type I classified. The interior of the habitation domes are lush forests with serene water features, manicured parks, and stone statues to various cultural figures of the various cultures - but one is present in every park. This monument is Prince Athriel with two out stretched hands downward to the observer in an uplifting manner, often in the middle of a waterfall's pool. Residential buildings often house 4-20 individuals, most are family units, and characterized by being square with an interior courtyard. These buildings are tucked away within the forests although each has a cobbled trail that leads to the main pathways.
POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Crown Square: At the center of the central habitation dome (Dome 1) is an open air amphitheater like structure where resides an large disc. laid into the white stone, of amethyst . There is enough seating for two hundred and standing room around the rim for at least another thousand. This is where the Prince informs his people of especially momentous events and makes monthly addresses. Unlike the the rest of the city the bearing of arms around Crown Square is strictly prohibited and during these events the total of all Police Droids are active throughout all Domes but especially the central dome.
  • Droid Depot: Located in Dome 2 the Droid Depot is a surface building under the dome which leads to an elevator. This elevator has space enough 20 occupants standing side-by-side and takes said occupants several meters into the asteroid's developed underground to a warehouse for the city's Police Droids. Access is limited to technicians.
  • Horizon Port: Adjacent to Dome 5 this is the only starport connected to a habitation dome and is limited to Light Freighter and equivalent starcraft, it also houses the hangars for the city's starfighter defense forces. This is the main reception area for merchants, spacers, and tourists. Visiting starcraft that fit the criteria for docking can buy fuel, seek routine maintenance, and dispose of waste product.
  • Merchant's Call: Within the central habitation dome, officially known as Dome 1, is an open air market of clean stalls with merchants calling out their wares. Traders, investors, craftsmen, and bankers setup shop in this location. Many of these merchants are not residents of the city although some are. The main draw for traders is the proximity of the city to the Parlemian Trade Route. Included in this location are several holoterminals used for business transactions as well as a Bounty Hunter's Guild bounty board (although hunting bounties within the city is strictly prohibited). Sales tax at the Merchant's Call is moderate at 6%. The sale of arms outside of those legal within the city is prohibited, however the sale of illicit drugs and slaves is permitted (although these goods are illegal to possess outside of the Merchant's Call or in transit to the Horizon Port).
  • Royal Dueling Court: Located at the center of Dome 6 is a modern dueling court with suppression fields that mimic the long since past Tarisian dueling arenas. Here denizens of the city can air their grievances against one another (in a non-lethal manner) to seek satisfaction. While this is the official purpose the secondary purpose is used far more frequently with outsider duelists seeking glory against their colleagues. Gambling on duels is legal and lightly taxed at just 2%, however the entry fee into the RDC is 1,200 Credits for outsiders.
  • Prince's Palace: Just a few minutes walk through dense groves from Crown Square is the Prince's Palace. The palace is much like a ring at only a single floor with multiple carved pillars holding up the roof. The elegant structure has four entrances at cardinal directions and contains multiple private rooms to which only the Prince and his guests have access. The throne room however is public, and like Crown Square is prohibitive towards arms, and once more an open air structure with holographic golden petals lightly raining down into the court. The throne itself sits on three circular sets where the throne is central, and is sharply angular with a rectangular backing that tapers to a triangle pointing towards the sky, made of white stone and gold inlays.
  • Zoological Garden: Dome 3 is home to the city's zoological garden which hosts many placid creatures, big and small, for the viewing pleasure of the city's people. Included is an aquarium with more dangerous and strange creatures from the known planets of the galaxy. Children play with the Akk Dogs pups and are invited to enjoy themselves with riding Reeks.
  • Museum of Galactic History: A large building nestled in Dome 4 which holds few physical relics of galactic history but does display man holo exhibits of the lacking materials. Exhibits change weekly. One of the most prized possessions of the museum is a bone said to be from an ancient Mythosaur. These claims have been pursued the official scientific research has confirmed the claims to a near certainty - with lack of Mythosaur DNA and collaborative skeletal finds that are accessible to the city's biologists this seems to be the extent of their capabilities. So far the favorite exhibit is that of the Old Republic long before the Battle of Yavin. The museum doubles as a place of regular learning for the young with a dozen classrooms.
  • Village of the Honored: Dignitaries and wealthy visitors are treated to a private collection of floating homes in Dome 7 furnished with the most exquisite appliances and decor available to the sector. Regular Police Droid patrols make certain that their privacy is ensured. Those that dwell here are known, as the name suggested, as the Honored Guests. Honored Guests are treated to complimentary replusorlift enabled gilded carriage rides to ferry them to their destinations.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Construction began on the city in late 855 ABY (after Athriel claimed Asteroid Field 77U and renamed it Horizon's Crown) and the city's utilities and habitation dome infrastructure was completed in early 857 ABY. Detailed construction continued into 858 ABY. The city became the center of a new independent nation under Athriel in 857 ABY when the before mentioned Sephi and founder of the asteroid colony proclaimed himself Prince Athriel, Sovereign of Horizon's Crown. Intentions for self governance and territorial sovereignty were made clear to the two closest planets, Ord Tiddell & Euceron. Purchase of several hundred Police Droids and a wing's worth of gunships were made simultaneously to ensure that the city be prepared for inevitable pirate raids. The infant economy of the city has begun to rapidly expand as investors and tourists begin to stake claims in the future of the colony. Alongside the initial success and tales of its' welcoming nature to refugees who fled to escape the territorial expansion of the Sith Empire in 858 ABY have made the colony an attractive location for those individuals looking to start a new life. Plans for expansion as of 858 ABY have been shelved as the seven habitation domes that make up the colony, with underground maintenance networks below, have yet to hit population levels that would impact the serene atmosphere. An eighth habitation dome will be built if the need arises in the future.
