OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a plot device device for story telling in the Netherworld, and to provide alternative means for small-scale adventures into the nether without the use of Major controlled hypergates
  • Canon Link: Jedi Star Compass
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Has the capacity to locate rifts to the Netherworld in space, and guide the holder of the object toward them
  • Requires the Force to be used and is attuned to netherworld rift energy
STRENGTHS
  • Able to locate rifts to the Netherworld in space, and guide the holder of the finder toward it
  • Allows navigation through rift 'wormholes' once a rift is found
WEAKNESSES
  • Requires the Force to use, leaving it useless to non-Force Sensitives
  • Rift wormholes are unstable at best, navigation through can be perilous
  • Useless unless rift energy is detected, just a relic otherwise
DESCRIPTION
Originally created by the Jedi Order as a Jedi Star Compass, the item fell into obscurity for many decades - if not centuries - and up until recently had remained undiscovered. However, at some point either during or following the original Omni event, an individual found and re-purposed the Star Compass to another task: to track nether-rift energy. One can only assume that through a combination of the Force, and technomancy, the compass was altered in function. With the addition of components from a suspect origin - potentially the Netherworld itself (see: unconfirmed) - the focusing crystal contained within was warped, its alignment and mystical power shifted, and instead of seeking out paths through space per the standard use, it was attuned to rift energy and the small wormholes they could create (see: tears in space).

Yet, between that first Omni event and now, the 'rift-finder' was lost again, the unknown artificer having disappeared or abandoned it. Possibly due to rift energy ceasing. It was discovered again, more recently following the destruction of Csilla and the nether energy that began to spread throughout the galaxy, in a forest on Mustafar. Specifically, it was stored among Sith cultists, the Alazmecs, and was retrieved by an adventuring archaeologist team. While not the original intent to find such an item, in truth Caen San Tekka had been expecting another item (see: Force holocron), and the rift-finders real function was revealed later after he took it to speak with a mysterious client that sought it (see: thread pending).

Now, the rift-finder has become useful once again, as the rift energy radiated throughout the galaxy and hypergates activate across the expanse. And between those larger portals, there remains smaller wormholes for those brave - or foolish - enough to use them, guided by the rift-aligned Force crystal within the converted compass to places unknown deep in the Netherworld...
