Freedon Nadd was an Old Republic Jedi prodigy whose conscious decision to embrace the dark side of the Force had a significant impact on galactic events for many generations after his death. Nadd's career began as a student in training on the planet Ossus, but a lust for greater power caused him to slay his Master, Matta Tremayne, and renounce his affiliation with the Jedi Order. He fled Ossus and made his way to the heart of the old Sith Empire, where he gained an enormous wealth of dark side knowledge. He eventually followed the Force to the jungle moon of Yavin 4, where he found and apprenticed himself to the ancient Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow. Sadow trained Nadd in the Sith arts, and led the young Jedi even further down the dark path. When he determined that he had learned all his Sith Master had to offer, Nadd used his newfound powers to kill Sadow and left Yavin 4 behind in search of a world to conquer as his own. He proclaimed himself Dark Lord of the Sith, and used his sorcerous powers to subjugate the world of Onderon, where he ruled as king from the capital of Iziz for more than a hundred years until his physical demise. His body was entombed below the royal palace of Iziz, which became a focal point of Sith power. Nadd's spirit lingered in the tomb, from whence it taught the descendants of his bloodline and further steeped Onderon in the miasma that was the dark side of the Force.

What does any of this have to do with today?

Connel, fresh off of his most recent rounds of meditations, was led here, to Dxun, to follow up on one of the locations that his mother had given him to investigate. It made sense to start with him, as well as Uliq Qel Droma, or even Exar Kun. Sure, there were the “Revans” and “Malaks” of the galaxy, even the “Galen Mareks”… maybe he will get to them… but it started here for him.

Now, before anyone gets any ideas, Connel was more than smart enough to “call ahead”. He knew that while colleague Vince Vince was the Crown Prince of Onderon, a planet that Dxun was moon to, this was under the governance of the Mandalorian Empire, and so Connel made sure to contact “Mandalore” himself, Aether Verd Aether Verd for the permission to do so. He took no chances and asked for permission for “a group” (though he was going alone) just in case as well. This would come at the cost of the Mandalorians getting the Lion’s share of whatever he had found. This was really not the issue that it sounded like as Connel was really only looking for information. Even if he found a holocron, all he wanted was a conversation with what was inside.

Why?

Well, it starts with his father Caltin. Caltin Vanagor “walked the line” for a long time, he had every reason on the outside looks of him to be a Dark Lord of the Sith, but never came close to falling. Connel had this same physiology, this same belief, and the same training, but he wanted to know why. He wanted, not to conquer the Force, but to understand it all. Will it work? Maybe. Maybe not. However he was not going to just sit back and make fun of the Sith without having the knowledge to back it up. If it really was “the easy way out” he was going to know why.

He landed well enough away from the tomb of Freedon Nadd, now it was just a trek.
