The Quintessence is based on an old design that has proved reliable for hundreds of years. This round-headed design medium freighter is still fairly popular, and variations have seen use as transports and military light frigates.

Originally The Harlequin, this vessel was manufactured in 385 ABY by subsidiary of KDY, whose name was used to manufacture a budget line of KDY vessels. There are a few similar models found in the galaxy, but this ship is made of parts that are freely available. The design is reliable and easy to maintain.

The Harlequin served as a transport for a respectable trade and logistics company based on Eriadu. She was stolen by Kairon Rees, whose father than the trade company and refitted as a smuggler vessel. He had originally intended to sell on The Harlequin, and return to a life of pirating. However, when his daughter’s son Asmus Janes, joined him in search of adventure, he could not condemn the exuberant youth to the brutal reality of pirating.

The ship is reasonably fast in a straight line, but handles like a pig when fully laden.

One of the ship’s redeeming features is the cargo arrangements. Two main cargo holds sit just behind the front section. Each of these can be detached from the ship and has repulsors that allow limited motion and are remotely controlled from the bridge. When the vessel cannot dock within a space station or larger vessel, the cargo can be quickly unloaded and dropped off. Each of these cargo bays is separately climate controlled, to allow a variety of goods, flora and fauna to be transported.

Behind these is a large space where further cargo pods can be attached to the vessel. A large number of modular pods can be loaded, just like the Gallofree medium transport used by the Rebels at the Battle of Hoth. The modular cargo loadout allows the Quin to dump her cargo rapidly if an escape is required.

The ship is highly modular for upgrades. Outwardly, she has seen better days. Blast marks from several encounters from pirates are visible and the visage of the scantily clad Harlequin is almost visible beneath her new logo.
Since purchasing the ship, Kairon has made a number of upgrades. Initially he worked on the systems he saw as key: sensors and engines. A sensor package from CEC enables the Quin to spot enemy fighters from a great distance, and upgrades have given her great speed when unladen. A jamming array, tractor shrouds and counter measures module make it even more difficult for patrols to catch her. Finally, Kairon recently relented and order a series of weapon upgrades. Originally the Quin had no weapons, but Rees added a pair of quad turrets. However, the increasingly dangerous contracts he has been forced to take have pushed the Captain to put the ship in for significant refit. Now the vessel sports a twin turbolaser turret, to threaten any pursuing corvettes, and homing concussion missile launchers that can disable fighters at a distance, or interfere with capital ship systems.

Internal Layout

Most of the crew space is in the saucer shaped section at the head of the ship, which is split into two levels. The upper level contains the cockpit, designed for up to four crew members. Cockpit:

Behind this is a general living area space. This has a large holomap generator, dining table and chairs, and a small kitchen area. A ladder still extends above and below the saucer section, even though there are currently no turrets mounted. However, there are some small spaces here, where the crew will often hide small items they don’t wish to be found in a search.

On the floor below, a central chamber houses to ship’s navigation system and main computers. This room is cooled to 0C. A corridor runs around this and the space outside of this is “sliced” into 8 small rooms. Each bedroom is narrow with very little personal space. The Captain’s room is larger than the others and has a fold down double bed that becomes a desk. He has a glass cabinet across one wall with trading mementoes and a wide variety of books all secured. He has a personal sonic shower. The last room houses the communal refresher room, with two sonic showers washbasins and refreshers.
Typical cabin (Captain’s quarters approximately 3xlarger):

A long corridor runs through the frame of the ship that connects the front of the ship to the rear. Access to modular cargo bays is from this corridor, which is wide enough to move large items between bays if necessary. The two main cargo bays have wide open spaces which can be used by the crew for exercise or recreation if not full of cargo, or set to inhospitable atmospheric conditions.

At the rear of the ship, the easily accessible areas are split into two floors. The upper level houses a small office space with desks and holo terminals (and Asmus’ gaming machine)

The level below is the main engineering room, which provides maintenance access to key engine systems / further smuggling locations.
