• Description: The Qheece are bipedal, moth-like insectoids with dense black chitin overlaid by thick yellow-and-black fur, large patterned wings, glowing eyes capable of perfect vision in absolute darkness, and sensitive antennae. They move with a grounded, powerful gait despite their wings, favoring cavern floors and shadowed spaces. Their society is matriarchal and theocratic, built around a ravenous queen and a gender-fluid spiritual leader called the High Altar. Though they wear primitive furs and bone adornments, they understand Galactic technology.

• Distinctions:

Their eyes glow softly, yellow, white, or amber and grant perfect vision in total darkness; they have no true eyelids and instead protect the lenses with a translucent membrane.
    
    Females are typically slightly smaller and more agile than males. When a female is chosen as Queen she undergoes a rapid, poorly understood growth spurt that can more than double her mass and wing span within weeks, accompanied by increased appetite and aggression. Males are broader-shouldered and more heavily muscled, with thicker chitin, but their wings are thinner and more fragile, making them vulnerable to targeted strikes that ground them.
    
    Aging Qheece develop longer, more ornate antennae and deeper fur coloration. Regional variation is minimal due to their relatively recent engineered origin, though cavern-dwelling populations tend toward denser fur and slightly larger antennae.

• Night Vision:
  • Perfect visual acuity in absolute darkness and extreme low-light conditions, originally engineered for corporate research; they suffer no penalty in pitch-black environments and can detect movement and heat signatures at considerable range.
• Acute Hearing:
  • Capable of detecting and localizing sounds from approximately 30 yards away, even through dense swamp fog or cavern rock, giving them exceptional early-warning and tracking ability.

Weaknesses:

• Force Nullification Vulnerability:
  • Inside Force-nullification fields similar technology Qheece completely lose access to all Force-derived advantages and are reduced to purely physical baseline capabilities.
• Phototropic Obsession:
  • An almost compulsive attraction to artificial or natural light sources. Prolonged exposure to bright light can induce disorientation, fixation, or reckless behavior as they leave cover to approach the source.
• Fragile Male Wings:
  • Male Qheece possess thinner, more delicate wing membranes than females. Damage to these wings grounds them permanently until healed or indefinitely if severe, stripping their limited flight capability and making them preferred targets in combat.
• Disease:
  • While they consume their dead partly to limit internal outbreaks, Qheece readily carry and transmit pathogens acquired from infected environments, making prolonged contact with outsiders or contaminated areas a biological risk to allies and enemies alike.
• Queen Dependence:
  • The species' matriarchal structure is absolute. If the reigning Queen is killed or incapacitated without a clear successor already undergoing the growth transformation, the hive often fractures into confusion, infighting, or temporary paralysis until a new Queen asserts dominance.

• Diet:
  • Primarily herbivorous, favoring fungi, mosses, and swamp vegetation found in the deep caverns. They will consume the bodies of their own dead and occasionally other organic remains as a practical measure to conserve resources and limit disease spread. The Queen and the High Altar often share authority, though the Queen's physical dominance usually prevails in open conflict. Rituals involve offerings of light sources which are then extinguished and communal consumption of the dead.
• General Behavior:

Qheece society is strictly matriarchal around the Queen, who is obeyed without question and whose ravenous hunger sets the tone for the hive's aggression. Family units are fluid; young are raised communally in protected nursery caverns under the watch of older females. Mating is competitive and often ritualized, with successful males earning temporary status through displays of strength or technological prowess.

They are nocturnal by preference, spending daylight hours or the equivalent cavern bright periods resting and emerging in darkness to forage, raid, or explore. They build elaborate fungal-and-resin structures within existing cavern systems rather than open settlements.

Curiosity about technology is intense; a Qheece given a blaster or piece of armor will usually master its use within days. Relations with outsiders are pragmatic, trade for tools and light-emitting devices is common, while betrayal or disease threats are met with swift, collective violence. They do not fear death, viewing the consumption of the fallen as both practical and sacred.

The Qheece were engineered by the Kuat Systems Consortium as living testbeds for next-generation night-vision systems. Geneticists combined moth-like sensory traits with humanoid intelligence and durability, then subjected successive generations to extreme darkness trials. The project succeeded in producing highly refined optical data that later informed military goggle designs, but the subjects proved more sentient and adaptive than anticipated.

When funding priorities shifted, the remaining populations were quietly released rather than euthanized. Many perished; a resilient core group eventually reached Nal Hutta, drawn by the planet's vast, lightless cavern networks beneath the surface swamps.

There they established permanent hives, developed their theocratic culture around the protective Swamp Gods, and began integrating scavenged technology into their otherwise primitive material culture. Over the generations the engineered drive toward light has remained a psychological constant, while their Force sensitivity initially an unintended side effect has deepened into a quiet, instinctive mysticism.
