The Dead Man
The Zhornee officer sighed as she checked the time once more. This particular camp was set up as a landing area for the alien relief efforts. Many of the Zhornee on the site resented the need for such relief, but they knew better than to question the Empress's orders.
No one was completely sure how the outbreak started, but what they did know was that it had gone major in the last month. Entire villages were being wiped out by the Grey Plague, and the few doctors the Zhornee had were either working for days at a time with no rest, or were infected themselves.
The officer looked over the women she had with her. They were mainly regular infantry, with extra coats to protect from exposure. Chaos reigned in the villages stricken with the plague, and this escort was to ensure the safety of the aliens.
But she shook herself out of those thoughts. She had to look presentable, after all.
