ADVANCED SYSTEMS:

Armament Frequency Modulator

Strengths:
  • The Lancet possesses significant forward firepower, capable of posing a threat even to heavy cruisers.
  • The Lancet's Armament Frequency Modulator allows for its anti-warship weapons to be modulated to a frequency at which they can pierce through the shields of a specific target. The ability to directly attack the enemy vessel's hull allows for the Lancet to quickly destroy the subsystems of even Star Destroyer class warships, potentially neutering them and giving itself an edge.
Weaknesses:
  • The Lancet is still a roughly Corvette-sized warship, and has the durability to match. If drawn into an extended firefight with much of any warship larger than itself, the Lancet will lose. Additionally, any ship that manages to get past the front beams' field of fire will only have a paltry dual solar ionization turret to worry about, making it far easier to be taken down.
  • While determining the frequency of an enemy ship's shields, the Armament Frequency Modulator prevents all anti-capital guns on the Lancet from firing for a period of about five seconds. This occurs every time the ship changes targets and uses the device. Additionally, the weapons can only be modulated to penetrate the shields of a single vessel, and if that is changed, previously penetrable targets will have effective shields once again.
Description: Lancet was originally laid down at the Yaga Minor Shipyards for the Sith Empire back when the Rampant-class Assailant Monitor was one of the foremost ships within the Imperial navy. As more advanced vessels came along and the Sith Empire's offensive crusade stagnated, Lancet was increasingly relegated to backwater duties. When the Fel Imperium invaded, resulting in the destruction of the Sith Empire, Lancet and her crew immediately fell in with the New Order, where they served for such a time until the New Order fleet could no longer be sustained anymore. The result of this was that Lancet and whatever remained of her kin were laid up in the Imperial Graveyard, where for decades they sat amongst the ruins of what had once been the most powerful navy in the entire galaxy.

It was after Vanessa Vantai's choice of clandestine involvement with the Krath that Lancet would see a new lease on life. DCMM engineers gutted the aging hulk and refitted her with the latest in technology and weaponry, providing her with two forward-mounted light beam cannons - more firepower than any other corvette sans the Void Refit of the Massassi. The Lancet was also provided with a prototype Armament Frequency Modulator - essentially a device utilizing the vessel's own sensors to determine at what frequency the enemy ship's shield is resonating at. The computing systems of the Lancet then modulate the ship's weapons to a frequency that allows for direct penetration through the enemy ship's shields, enabling the ship to cause far more damage than would typically be expected. This comes at a downside, however, as the Modulator takes the ship's heavy weapons offline while it changes their frequencies, leaving the ship essentially helpless against capital ship attack.

After being refitted and tested, Lancet was quietly sent to Empress Teta to join the Krath fleet. One can only wonder what missions are in store for the aging ship.

Do you have a link for this technology?

Am I to understand this right in that it allows the SBeam Light Cannons to ignore enemy shielding?

No as it has not been submitted as a separate tech sub. This ship in question is the prototype to test said technology. As well, it does allow for shield penetration, but to a single ship in question, and the weapons are disabled while the modulator determines the frequency in question(represented practically by waiting a posting round). It could also be easily overcome by manually changing the shield frequency of the ship being attacked, thus forcing the Lancet to recalibrate in order to continue penetrating the shields. Or they could have a shield that's constantly cycling random frequencies, which would pretty much render the modulator completely useless.

[member="Vanessa Vantai"], I'm very hesitant about signing off on technology that explicitly defines how another person's technology works, especially when I don't know of any evidence or hints that this is the case.

From an in-character/lore standpoint, can you show me where the idea of Star Wars shields having certain frequencies comes from?

From a gameplay perspective, I really doubt that I can approve this modulator as is, especially given the power of the SBeams. I can get behind some reduction of shield strength and better penetration of shielding, but I cannot get behind completely ignoring shielding.

Information regarding the anti-ray shield energy weapon would seem to indicate that a certain frequency would allow the penetration of energy shields. From that one can divine an energy shield resonates at a frequency(or several frequencies) that, through the switching of a weapon system to that or another frequency, would be plausible, as would the remodulation of a shield's frequency to render such obsolete. Given that the Solar Ionization Cannon is capable of naturally penetrating shields, I would assume that through careful modulation of the electromagnetic frequency of the SBeams, a similar effect could be generated.

[member="Vanessa Vantai"], the Anti-Ray Shield Energy weapon has a certain special frequency of its own, rather than that of the shields itself. This is also an speculative technology from an in-character standpoint, meaning that there's a good chance it might not even exist. As for the ability of the solar ionization cannons, that's also an ability of the weapon, rather than a specific property of the shields itself.

In both instances though, we're talking about the traits of the weapon rather the idea of shields using a specific frequency.
