DESCRIPTION
The InterGalactic Gene Bank, also known as the Gene Bank of Arkania or just the Gene Bank, is a nonprofit institution dedicated to the preservation of genetic material, with a particular focus on species that may be driven into extinction in the immediate future; it eagerly collects data from even the most common species, however, e.g., in order to build an incredibly detailed database on the Human genome.

Standard collection protocol is threefold - firstly, the Gene Bank receives material donations from various individuals and institutions; secondly, it provides services in exchange for genetic material, e.g., heritage/medical analysis (free-of-charge basic package or discount on premium package) in exchange for adding the customer's data; thirdly, it sets out to collect materials of its own, which can take the form of a vertiable army of droids systematically sampling an entire ecosystem or a repulsorvan on Nar Shaddaa offering "Food for Samples" and everything in between.

Wherever it operates the mantra of the Gene Bank tends to be "at the very least, don't be harmful"; when it comes to receiving material donations, on the other hand, it is much less scrupulous - no attempt is made to confirm whether they were acquired legally, preservation comes first.

RATIONALE
A project in development for some time, it was the genocidal conquests of the Bryn'Adul that truly kickstarted the Gene Bank's development, bringing with it an influx of funding and genetic materials to ensure that even those species forced into extinction can be preserved for posterity.

While the donations involved were hardly as sizeable as those received by the
Galactic Emergency Relief Fund, the operations of the Gene Bank were designed to be at least partially self-perpetuating, its commercial aspects paying for necessary maintenance and the collection of further genetic material, even as it happily takes donations to further bolster its budget. As a nonprofit designed for longevity, not immediate results, any "profit" would be deposited into long-term savings accounts with a focus on investing in ethically sustainable companies/projects.

Should the Gene Bank's savings ever exceed the reasonable, any excess would be donated to other charitable causes; there are, however, certain advantages to being a major donor: Most prominently, the IGBC and its chairmen have near-unrestricted access to the entire genetic collection.
