The Hutt Cartel?

Ladies and Gents.

Cast your mind back. We once had the Hutt Cartel, run by [member="Sempra the Hutt"]. I was one of the first people around that faction, sweet talking my way up to faction admin at some point before falling inactive. I also remember that [member="Flannigan Mcnash"] had a lot to do with The Hutt Cartel back in the day. Sure it probably changed overtime and i'm probably accidently missing a few people out, even though I don't mean to be.

So what am I getting at here? The Hutt Cartel was great with the RP it offered, we had countless numbers of good RP's with [member="Lady Kay"] and we told good stories. I'm aware I did some stupid things in the final days of The Cartel, I apologized for all of them. That still doesn't answer the question of what I'm getting at here though does it? The Hutt Cartel is dead, I have no idea the date it finally fell into inacivity and death but it's gone.

So why not rebuild?

My question to you is who would be down with a reboot of The Hutt Cartel, working to fix some of the problems the previous had while still keeping the level of storytelling we had going on? I hope Mcnash gets this because I really want Flannigan to be down, we worked well together in the past and if he's down now we could work now.

Having run the Cartel before Sempra (long before Sempra and even before I led the republic), I can say there's two reasons why the Cartel usually doesn't last long.

First, hard to keep everyone interested. In a faction of loners, criminals, thieves, etc. Everyone wants to do their own thing and unification is hard as a minor faction.

Second, y'all keep going major. Criminal factions don't work too well in the open. Few "legitimate" governments want to do business with a criminal organization. It'd be like if the Mafia suddenly appointed a president and ran New York as a new country or if the Cartels took over Mexico and did the same thing. If anything, you'd get outright denounced or attacked.

Criminal organizations work best in the shadows.

Just asking a question, but don't you need Hutts in charge to be the Hutt Cartel? If you are planning on keeping it close to the traditional methods, then you may want to recruit some Hutt PC's.

Simply a thought. :)

I know, I'm very much aware those are two really hard things to balance. I have a few story ideas to please everyone, I plan to have a few things running at once so everyone is catered for. I want nothing to do with offiical faction stuff anyway, I know for a fact that you open yourself up doing that and it's meh. Factions can become big and important without becoming an offical major faction

[member="Abelain Narv'uk"]

I'm aware :)

I want nothing to do with the IC running of this, thus I'll hand over to actual Hutts. I'm the OOC "brains"

This incarnation of the Hutt Cartel will have the Silvers and the Techno Empire for antagonists... the Silver Jedi because they are eyeing the canonical homeland of the Hutt Cartel, the Techno Empire because of issues dating back to the Techno Union era.

I'd be kinda down to help with this, my original Character [member="Jaster of Clan Awaud"], was a business associate of the Cartel. I can hand out missions and other stuff with rewards for the membership. As well as be one to assist in the Admin Team. Also, I think making a NPC Hutt would be better then relying on a certain person to run the whole Criminal Organization. Then have the Admin team take a peice of the pie and participating in GMing certain threads.

One of the key reasons people lost interest of the old Hutt Cartel was that the Admin Team kept dying off, leaving threads incomplete. Plus members that were thrown into group threads no longer posting on long campaigns. You would have to fix a lot of things before a lot of people would return to that.

Here's the facts kids. OOC drama killed the Cartel. Period.

Here's my advice, leave the old cartel in it's grave. Start a new faction. Advertise. Be active. Most importantly, have fun. Don't let OOC chit ruin your faction having a good time.

[member="Kei Garnik"]

Look, if I thought it was possible I would have done it a long time ago, for a long time I was the only active member of the Cartel, the problem was we got a ton of momentum going through, but like Zenva said, OOC drama halted the entire momentum and essentially killed it with one fell swoop.

And as for Hutts, the problem with them is, not many people I know play the Hutts too long, people simply made a Hutt for the Faction, played them in one or two threads, then as far as I can tell simply left. The main issue from this stemming that people played a Hutt then thought they were top dog in my eyes, acting like they called the shots, not realizing that they were on the lowest rung of the Hutts.

But in short, I think we should simply let them die. There time has passed and it is time for some other Criminal Faction to take the mantle. If I really thought it was possible I would, but I have been here since essentially day one and watched as around three other people have tried to revive the Faction, consisting of Vinskk Revamp, Flannigan Mcnash and even Sempra at one point was going to try and revive it, but left because of OOC drama. So please, just let them die. Their time has passed and their are new factions to be made, rather then try and breath some life into the carcass of a horse.

[member="Tiali Orazio"] makes a fine point. Gather those here interested in making a criminal faction together and start a new group from there.

[member="Kei Garnik"] if you decide to do that, let me know, I'll gladly sign some contracts to your new group for ship, armor, vehicles, droids. Pretty much anything I can help you with.

[member="Kei Garnik"], where is the cartel, no where. Currently the Cartel collapsed under its own weight, RPly I usually run it as due to infighting with the Hutts, they broke into minor factions with different ideas holding resources from the empire that once stood in its place.

[member="Popo"], I'm going to come across a little rude maybe even a little angry, what killed the Cartel was inactive admins. Not the psychology of playing criminals, not to be or not to be a thug, that is not the question. God we had RP with other factions, dominions with the minor empire themed factions, fleeting event with the republic, and not to mention the various drug related content.

Vinsk, got owner. Not that he's a bad guy, I don't know the details why he disappeared. They could've been good ones, there's a world out this game I understand that. But with an inactive owner, another inactive admin and one active staff member pulling on a dead body, we had some great RPers that pulled there weight and more, like [member="Thraxis"], he was always active. Always ready to lend a hand. Myself and Sempra, before try to end the cartel we tried to pull the plug give the story an ending, but it was kept alive for a few more months did a few threads, than died. The Cartel didn't go out with a bang it went out with a wimpier.

The Future
I don't know, really its uncertain. We have the resources there to bring it back, but see no real huge need to. I've thought about it sure, currently I'm seeing how the Black Sun, pans out. [member="Xis"], I hope has the ability to see this pan out, the willingness to put time and effort into it.

Active. Inactive, don't matter. What REALLY killed the Cartel was Sempra/Mantic hurling it under the bus in an attempt to save Republic territory.

My point is criminal factions tend to not last long for the reasons I mentioned

How to make a successful Criminal faction;

1. Be all inclusive. Let gangs, pirates, cartels, etc all hop in and do stuff in the faction. Don't try to just be Black Sun, don't try to just the Hutts, that's too niche and ultimately not everyone will want to do it.
2. Dont try to be a government. This is the biggest trap Criminal factions fall into here on swrp. Youre not/shouldn't be a government. At best you should be a loose organization with every gang/group represented.
3. Make it fun. A lot of factions on the board would love to deal with a criminal element. Engage other factions and help in doms, start skirmishes, etc.
5. If you go major Do not function as a singular government in control of a sector of space. I've said this in point #2 but I reiterate. If you go major you should function as individual gangs in charge of planets/sectors of space and create a map game within your own faction where gangs gain control of your own territory, only banding together when a greater threat comes(invasions). This give the faction something to do(fighting for control inside of itself) and also adds an individualistic dynamic.

This chat isn't a bad example of why it failed. Just look at all the different views of why and who made it failed and different views on how to make one work.

But it's no use pointing fingers on why/how the cartel collapsed instead people could concentrate on making a unique way to make a longer lasting, efficient and effective criminal organisation. And this chat is a good way to get ideas out there to possibly fix/resurrect an exisiting faction e.g. Flanaghan attempting to help out the black Suns.

There is no use dwelling on the past let's look to a brighter future well darker in our case!!

Working on Munin's advice, Slevin and I have created a forum for all criminal types and factions ( to include Black Sun, The Hutt Cartel, The Exchange and any smaller pirate groups, swoop gangs, slaver organizations, slicer's and information brokers etc)
