The Hanging Tree | The Trial of Gray Raxis

Gray was a bit surprised, but did as he was told. He wrapped his fingers around the hilt of the flaming sword and then raised it into the air. He listend to [member="Ra Vizsla"] boom out the words "For Mandalore. For Atonement." as he did. He was doing as he was commanded by his Mand'alor right now, there was no doubt to that fact.

K E L D A B E
Ra's eyes emblazoned green.
His face began to become feral.
Like a wolf's.
Like an animal's.
Before the Clans, Mand'alor was literally transforming.
At the same time, both hands shot up to Gray's wrists, holding tight. Talons began erupting from his fingernails, silver fur began dividing his knuckles.
Claws began to dig in to Gray's flesh.
"BROTHER,"
Ra's wolf-like face roared into Gray's.
"YOUR ATONEMENT BEGINS TONIGHT."
The massive Iron Wolf ripped both of his hands in opposite directions, claws piercing the flesh of Gray, attempting to separate his hand from his arm.
The false sense of security.
The betrayal of trust.
This was how Ra had felt on the beach of Kashyyyk. This is how the Clans felt when one of their own turned.
Betrayal was the worst kind of crime.
The hand that protected Jack. The hand that dismissed Mand'alor. The hand that raised the sword, declaring a willingness to atone for his mistakes.
That hand would be Gray's sacrifice for his mistake. His naivety. His blindness.
Ra attempted to separate tendon from muscle, muscle from bone.
Hand from wrist.

Gray was taken completely by surprise when Ra suddenly began to transform before him. Everything clicked into place for him as he saw the first stages of it. The stripping of his armor, the handing of the sword. It had all been done for this reason. It had all been done so [member="Ra Vizsla"] could reenact that betrayal once more. A witty trick that got the point well across to everyone who watched as much as to Gray.

Gray could feel the pain of the claws digging into his wrist, the terror of his flesh begin ripped apart as much as sliced. He wanted to scream out right now, but he didn't. Instead as sweat formed on his body from the shock of what was happening, Gray just smiled to Ra right in his face as the signs of the pain he felt were sure to be visible to the wolfish manbeast. He held the arm up even after the sword had fallen due to his tendons being severed. He just said in a voice only Ra could hear, " A wolf to judge a wolf eh? Clever and funny. I like it Ra."

Gray just continued to look towards Ra as crimson flowed down his arm and the urge to scream out only became more intense. He continued to keep the smile forced onto his face as his hand finally was removed from his arm. He continued to hold the stub up in the air as it bleed, partly from willpower and partly from the adrenaline rushing through his veins. He had faced worse than this before. He had almost died plenty of times in the past. He could get through this no matter what his body wanted. He had to get through this........

Sin watched all that happened before him, taking it all in, and understanding this was the price to pay. Death had been his, so a hand was a small price. Respect, and honor was displayed before him, and never had he seen the Mandalorians in a brighter light than today. He agreed that the loss of this hand was the best punishment to be given.

The Vahla stepped back some, and nodded in approval as his arms crossed his chest.

So the verdict has been given, and given honestly.

Something was wrong. The insides of Damien's mind were alight with flames, burning, searing, a pain worse then death at the hands of Turbolasers. He crumpled to his knees, unable to feel the hands of the Daemon Kyr'am as they sought to raise him. Blinding white centered in his field of vision, as memories flooded to fill what had been empty previously. Lost memories filled the void, returning, showing he too had felt the hand of betrayal.

Voracitos had been a true Master, teaching him the highest workings of the Force. He had taught him to hone his physical capabilities as well, surprise surprise, alongside how to calculate and plan every step toward the future he sought. But he had not been right in the literal consumption of Damien's memory. Everything not the most vital had been taken, and while some had returned, it had taken years. This was happening in seconds.

Slowly, unwillingly, Damien's eyes began to glow, to emanate a purplish hue. He drew from the dozens of spirits, of the fallen God, Zaiden James-Greyson. The Force Walker's mind was feeling attacked, so it was attempting to defend itself.

He was going to explode...

"Everyone get back!" Shouted a man nearby, recognizing what the situation was, what was going to occur. Instantly the men of the Daemon Clan lurched to create a clearing.

Kay's attention was glued to [member="Ra Vizsla"] and [member="Gray Raxis"] . She swallowed and took half a step back, to give Gray some room, nearly bumping into the Protectors that stood watch over them. Ra seemed to judge with common sense, almost ignoring the emotion-filled words uttered by the others, herself included. That spoke volumes for him.

She cast her eyes downward as punishment was given, closing them tightly as she heard the flesh tear and smell the burning caused by the hot blade. It brought back the memories of her own husband's death, being forced to watch as he was impaled, unable to help, unable to move save only to cry out in anguish. But this was not death, and Gray did not cry out. This was the same type of punishment that some cultures gave to thieves, a constant reminder of a crime committed.

She kept her eyes shut as she waited, waited for a sign that it was over and that they could return home safely.

There were clans that had not voted did it matter? The shouts around them were slowly dying the clamor for the punishment to be delivered, the wait to see what the Mand'alor would do. The moment ticked by everyone knew that Gray would not escape unscathed that he would pay a price, how much of a price would it be?

She watched, as did those around her, some held their breath others were trying to chant. She was mesmerized watching. All around them at first a silence the kind that came in the eye of the storm. The storm was brewing gathering strength and then it crashed upon Gray. The man took the punishment and for once his clan was quiet and no one interfered. Thank Manda for that

Gray, cousin of the dar'manda, and declared so by him and the Mand'alor punished was delivered in the manner in which the crime was committed.. Arla stood and watched, her vote was guilty of crimes even if not uttered. She looked at Mia and then to Ordo, "He is guilty, and has been punished for his guilt. BUT the dar'manda Raxis he bears the larger guilt, the larger crime of betrayal we need to find him."

She was not a bounty hunter, but for this she would.

When it was called for, Davon could be loud. Oh he could bellow with the best of them, could dress down a new recruit until even a brave mandalorian was a quivering wreck. This wasn’t one of those times. He’d asked to see the footage of Gray refusing to let Jack leave and it had not been provided. Because it did not exist.

Now wasn’t the time for planning. But it was the time for the olive branch.

His weathered features turned towards Lady Kay. She was pointedly looking away from the gruesome scene. The Mandalor had spoken. The Clan Alors had spoken. There was still the potential for atonement. Whether it appeased the council further or not was of no matter to Davon. They have baying for blood and their call had been heard.

Gray had taken his punishment stoically. He deserved a chance to make this right on his own merit.

“You know where Jack is?” Davon asked quietly. “I would go with your Alor and see Jack brought before this council.”

The demands of blood and retribution from the Alors of their respective clan came to a dead silence as their Mand'alor commanded to which they all obeyed. Not a single word or syllable was said from any mouth. Perhaps it was time to seal the fate for Gray and his clan? Perhaps Ra had made his final verdict on this trial? The Akaan waited for the decision that he was expecting to hear, but what he heard astonished him. Instead of condemning Gray and his clan as Dar'manda and giving them the proper death of a forsaken Mandalorian, the Sole Ruler gave them a second chance and to be atoned from their sins and wrongdoings. This was not what the Munin was expecting from Ra, but the Akaan once was lost like Gray was. Yes, he was imperfect and it was proved so when he joined the ranks of Deathwatch and attacked his fellow brothers and sisters. He was forgiven and atoned from those actions as it was Isley who had brought him back to his former self, and if it wasn't for the Alor of Clan Verd, then everything that was happening in his life would never be occurring at this time. He wouldn't have been the Wolf of War, his clan wouldn't have been the Vanguard of Mandalore, and he would never had found love with Bree.

These reflections caused the Cuir Rekr to allow Gray have a second chance in life.

The Alor watched as Ra changed into the form of a wolf and began Gray's atonement as he pulled the Raxis' hand from the tendril of his arm. Vilaz watched and never looked away, and he didn't dare to speak until this ritual was over. Yes, Gray and his clan would be forgiven, but they still needed to be punished for their crime.

A punishment that would fit the crime.

Draco had abstained from voting. Despite his distaste for the peace loving Clan Raxis, who he felt didn't see the necessity of the crusade, he found it hard to condemn the man. Were he in Gray's place, yes he would have done things very differently, but he likely wouldn't have gone on a hunt for his kin with the intention of slaying them. Especially considered how few kin he actually had.

Jack and he had spoken prior to the attack as they revealed, and that was the condemning factor. Draco would have stopped the ambush there, before it was ever planned, certainly before Jack ran up to Mand'alor and declared that Clan Raxis would defy him to its extinction. But to fall on his sword for his kin, there was similarities between himself and Gray there. Draco would have done his best to turn the Mand'alor into a fine red paste if he had demanded the deaths of one of his kin, no matter how justified.

But, in the end, the Mand'alors decision, and his orders, were justified. As an outsider looking in, he couldn't bring himself to side with Gray for his refusal to carve out the cancer that stained his clan's name. He couldn't understand why nothing had been done or said, and he could see that the rest of Clan Raxis had so far sat out the crusade. So far, the only actions in the Crusade carried out in their name, had been one of treachery and betrayal. Were it Draco, he would have Raxis men at the fore front, in the thickest fighting for the next battle.

Ra silently looked at Gray as he took the punishment. His eye's met Gray's.
The man made a joke.
Clearly in shock.
Mand'alor looked to Clan Raxis.
They would return home to Manda'yaim. They would re-learn what it was to be Mando'ade. They would be reminded of what allowed them to be sovereign, of what allowed them to stave off the Clans' lust for battle, to give in to their want for pacifism.
It was men like Ra.
Soldiers like the Mandalorians gathered here tonight.
Soldiers who protected Mandalore. No matter the price. No matter the cost. No matter the lives lost.
The current Mand'alor was no father,
but everything he did
was for the future children of Mand'alor.
Generations to come.
Security. Peace. Freedom.
It could only ever be afforded by military might.
It was the only language the forces of Chaos could possibly understand. Clan Raxis didn't understand this, didn't want to understand this.
Did it make them weak?
Ra believed so. There was strength in Clan Raxis, but that strength had failed them.
But the Protector of Manda'yaim could not afford to fail. Mand'alor could not afford to fail.
Ra could not afford to fail.
Their future as a people depended on it.

Ra kept the hand, his green eyes flashing as it was over. His features were human - was he ever a wolf? Keeping silent, Ra walked off, disappearing into the crowd with the hand of Gray Raxis. The Raxian Alor would never see it again.

The time for games and betrayal was over.

They had a war to win.

A war that had only just begun.

Stardust was pushed away bit simply nodded, she took a step back as she took a breath and watched

At first it looked as if ra would just make him hold a flaming sword, oh she was wrong...the minute she saw the man transform and blood start going down grays hand....it brought back memories...ohh God to many...gray has never lost a body part but star did...ohh God the sounds..it was horrible it brought imagines to her head she had not wanted to see

Yet she stayed and stared at gray shaking...she watched as it was ripped off before all that was left was a stump...and blood pouting from it

Stardust slowly approached...she had to cauterize it now...she had to...despite gray would say she would

Even if the force was dampened here she could more then likely still manage enough to cauterize it...after which she'd take him home for proper medical

She started focusing on heating her right hand then looked to gray as she put a hand on him and leaned close whispering with a tear droppimg" I'm sorry I have to hurt you"she said as she reached and grabbed the stump focusing the heat to burn the flesh and stop the bleeding

And as she did tears fell from her face as she held onto gray as she spoke in a shaky voice to [member="Lady Kay"]" go...go get the ships ready please....I'll follow soon"she said as she shivered...those lizards were doing a number now...she hated them

Kay slowly opened her eyes and looked up as [member="Davon Karr"] spoke, knowing just from his words that he was speaking to her. Instead of saying anything, she just merely nodded. Then she retreated back into herself again, shutting out everything around her. It wasn't until [member="Stardust Raxis"] 's voice was heard, that she returned her focus on the present. "....Okay..." That was all that she wanted to say right now. There was no point in saying anything more.

She turned and headed back the way that she came, still surrounded by the Protectors and thankful for them. Their time here would have been far worse otherwise. Lessons were learned this day, giving her new insight into the Mandalorians. And she wasn't so sure that she liked what she saw. But at least they were set free to go home, instead of being taken into custody. And at least they had their lives. That was more than they could say about Jack. Stupid Jack.

Once Kay could see their ships, she brought out her commlink from her pocket and signalled the pilots.
