The Great Factory Lore Challenge

Props where props are due: this contest was inspired by the Codex Lore Challenge. Some elements below have been adapted from that contest, with the consent of its creator.

Chaos has seen four years of complex, heartfelt stories put together by all of you. Many of our finest moments, though, happened in Invasions, when everyone else was busy working on their own part of the fight. Glance through a few Invasion threads and you’ll find stunning reversals, grand strategy, and desperate gambits: tragedy, triumph, despair, perseverance. The stakes have been higher and more visceral than for any other threads on the board.

And every Invasion is remembered many ways. It’s not often possible to look back on an Invasion without some kind of bias, rose-coloured glasses, even deliberate spin. Often we recall what we want to recall, and those are the stories that get passed down through a faction, shaping future stories. As any historian will tell you, truth is largely a matter of perspective.

With this contest, we’re aiming to commemorate four years of high-stakes storytelling, the Invasions that have shaped the fate of the entire community. Unlike Events, though, Invasions have rarely given out prizes or mementos other than stories and scars. This contest is your chance to make tangible memories for your faction.

CHALLENGE CRITERIA
  • Each challenge submission must have ‘Factory Lore Challenge’ in its title.
  • Each challenge submission must commemorate an Invasion -- any Invasion. For greater clarity, this includes the unofficial Battle of Roche event.
  • A challenge entry may be submitted in the Technology, Vehicle, or Starship categories.
  • Previously approved Factory submissions are not valid for this challenge.
  • Submissions MAY use development from previously completed IC threads. However, if the Invasion itself is cited as development, the submission must give necessary detail as to how much of the thread is directly relevant. (For example, list specific posts or give a range of relevant posts.)
  • Submissions MAY NOT have a production level of Unique.
  • Each challenge submission should be clearly marked as usable by all members of a major faction which participated in the Invasion. If the Invasion’s relevant major faction no longer exists, the submission may A) be usable by former members of the defunct faction, or:cool: be usable by an existing major faction which has some degree of continuity with the defunct faction (ideology and/or territory and/or historical connections, etc.).
  • Maximum 3 entries per writer.
  • Entries will be accepted starting Saturday, September 17th.
  • Entries must be submitted to the Factory by no later than Saturday, October 1st.
  • Each challenge submission must be completed and fully approved by Wednesday, October 5th.
  • Entries that fail to meet the above completion dates will be dropped from the challenge.
  • Final judging for submissions will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 7-8th.

JUDGING CRITERIA
  • LORE - How well you research and tie the Invasion to the submission.
  • CREATIVITY - How originally you commemorate the Invasion. For example, a basic commemorative medal might not score well in this category, nor would simply naming a ship class after the battle in question.
  • CONTENT - Grammar, spelling, evidence of effort, and a balance between focus and detail.
  • ACCURACY - Attempts at unbiased accounts will be respected. Citations and evidence are extremely important for contentious claims/interpretations of events. Entries which present heavily biased accounts must be careful to frame those accounts within a plausible IC context and support them with evidence from the Invasion thread. OOC ‘sour grapes’ are not encouraged.
  • UTILITY - Likelihood of others using this submission in the future. Again, submissions MAY NOT have a production level of Unique.

PRIZES
The winner of this challenge will receive a ‘No Development Necessary Pass’ for one new Factory submission on the following list:
  • A mass-produced starship or space station up to 2,000 metres in length.
  • A minor-production starship or space station up to 3,000 metres in length.
  • A unique non-combat space station up to 10,000 metres in length. (Note that all ship- or station-related prizes must still fall within the standard faction/corporation ownership rules, and may not be used as precedents for later submissions.)
  • A company which starts at Tier 4.
  • Any restricted material objective at any reasonable level of production. (For example, mass-produced beskar-plated Star Destroyers would not be considered plausible. Note that a given submission may require other development for especially powerful features unrelated to the restricted material.)
  • Any standard Technology/Vehicle/Starship submission as reasonable.
  • One non-combat submission involving quantum armor, a substance which is normally banned without explicit SWRP Staff Team permission. This submission must have a production level of Unique and cannot be reverse engineered in any way.
  • The winner may choose to apply their No Development Necessary Pass to any past, present, or future Flagship thread, reducing the mandatory post count from 400 to 200.
ELIGIBILITY
  • Factory Judges and Factory Staff may not participate. Other Staff members and any other board members may participate.

JUDGING
  • The Factory Judges will give each submission 0-4 points for each of the five criteria (lore, creativity, content, accuracy utility). Total score wins. These scores will not be made public.
  • Factory Staffers will vote to resolve any ties.
  • The Factory Judges will each provide a short statement on the winning submission.

Good luck, folks! Nicely written, [member="Jorus Merrill"]!

[member="Lyth Meran"]

Don't worry too much. All FJs are used to handling subs with varying levels of spelling. Evidence of effort is the priority. We'd rather see substantial but poorly spelled than literate but lazy.

Just for clarification: I assume the rewards for any winners of this contest can only pick one reward? For example, someone cannot pick to start a T4 company and lower a flagship thread from 400-200.

Emberlene's Daughter, The Jedi Generalist
[member="Jorus Merrill"] true and I can think of some things that might work, just need to go through all fo the invasions I have been in. "Invasion of Eridu commemorative Ashin Bobblehead" to keep in your speeders and ships to remember the woman.
