HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Ever since the Tof Invasion of the Galaxy in ~roughly~ 11 ABY, which was thwarted by New Republic forces, there have been Tof in the Galaxy, and with them came their language. Tofspeak, during the early days of the species in the Galaxy, was relatively intelligible with that of the Tofspeak of Firefist, however with age, with phonology shifts, and general linguistic drift, the Skyriver Dialect of Tof drifted further and further from the Tof of the homeworld. Having been isolated for so long, along with the synthetic and highly regulated nature of the language's grammar, some portions of Tof in the galaxy were speaking something nearly utterly divorced from their parent language. The sheer amount of borrowing that the language has made from Basic, Huttese, and Mandalorian (variance on dialect, what’s covered here can be classified as “pure” Galactic Tof) during it's time in the Galaxy has furthered that idea even more so.

Now, ages later, linguists are still confused about the exact way to classify the language, and attempts to formulate proper grammar guides and textbooks have proven nearly impossible due to the shifting and fluid nature of the language. Odds are, no two Tof in the Galaxy will speak the exact same version of the Galactic dialect.

EXAMPLE PHRASE

"Hello. My name is Ulka, I am a speaker of the Galactic Tof language."

"Þuv. Skerú oþúfliö rö töl Ulka. Skerú fliö mivök Ghöktofvökif."

Greetings! I realize that this submission is still WIP but I wanted to touch base before you get too far along. As it currently stands this submission may run afoul of one of the General Submission guidelines for the Codex.

These do not seem to be small excerpts at all, nor, are they clearly marked even though you added links to the top of the submission. If that's the case you will need to remove these photos and create something that belongs to you. I would also like to remind you that Ex-Gal Locations or Planets are not permissible within the Codex. Keep that in mind when working with any sort of satellite galaxy.

Please review all Codex Rules at your leisure and make sure to update this accordingly.

Srina Talon Srina Talon Thank you for popping in! I’ll have to review how I’m going to handle this now that the Extra Galactic issue has been brought to my attention.

I would like to say that those photos do belong to me, I slapped them together in Google Sheets, you can see by the poor clipping job on the corners. Along with the fact that there aren’t real languages that handle conjugation, noun declination, or phonetics exactly as this project does. Unless I’m misunderstanding the issue, all of the actual work on building the language here is my own.

Srina Talon Srina Talon Thank you plenty! I would like to say, that as far as it goes, the closest to “plagiarizing” is the fact the project is intentionally supposed to be coded similar to that of North and East Germanic languages for aesthetic reasons, but that’s not really something that’s “owned” by anyone. I don’t intent to go on a rant about linguistics and constructed languages as a concept, but vowels and consonants are always roughly similar between languages to begin with, it’s grammar where distinctions are made. I think even with sight to sight comparisons, it’s plenty obvious Ghöktof is quite different from its inspirations in that case.

I might just end up reformatting it to be a “Galactic Tof” language for Tof in the Galaxy so I don’t have to directly address or worldbuild any extra galactic elements besides it’s origin being with the Tofs themselves. In an attempt to solve the Extra Galactic issue

I understand what you're saying and where you're coming from. It's not an issue of "ownership" but more about utilizing something that you haven't created. You may have some similarities, but, as I mentioned previously - If it is your own? That's fine. All we ask is that you do the best you can.

That would be one way to go about it for the language. You can 100% write the Tof species in our Galaxy so it does make sense that the language could exist here. I just wasn't sure how far you were planning to take the Firefist angle if that makes sense? It seems to be very prevalent but you can't actually submit a Planet or a Location for it so it makes things tricky.

Srina Talon Srina Talon I was on mobile earlier, so apologies for anything I misread or didn't state clearly. As it stands, yes, all of the pictures, and soon to be orthography and dictionary section, will/have been custom made by me for this specific project. It always annoyed me that a lot of languages within the SW universe weren't fully fleshed out, so as someone who loves language, saw it fit to correct that due to my interest in running this current PC.

I get exactly what you're saying! And it does make the entire concept of running a Tof PC a bit more difficult, not being able to submit hard lore about the state of your home galaxy or the governments in charge of it, but as far as I can tell, there's nothing stopping someone in a position like Ulkahall to have personal lore about his homeland, even if it would end up contradicting other Tof PCs (then again I'm pretty sure he's the only Tof PC active on the board RN).

At least, from how I understand it, there'd be nothing wrong with Ulkahall having his own, personal, non codexified lore about his homeland, as long as me, as a writer, don't force it onto another player as gospel? Because the Extra Galactic clause does make this a bit more difficult, as I was originally planning on going through and writing up lore and submitting it for the Tof Kingdom, just to give the PC of Ulkahall a bit more backing when it comes to the narrative I want to tell with him.

Sorry for taking up so much of your time, just want to make sure I have everything straight heading into the future as I work on this PC.

Ulkahall Svaraghaun

You're not taking up too much of my time at all. It's perfectly fine as I am here, primarily, to help. I'm glad to see someone trying to flesh out a language. We just have to be sure on our end that we're crossing all of our t's and dotting our i's. As long as we're on the same page in that regard then there's nothing to worry about.

There's nothing wrong with Ulkahall having his own personal Lore. But, keep in mind the following:
3240938eb207be64b0350e3800c8558e.png

Any member is free to take or leave any of the Lore submitted. Chaos is a buffet of multiple-choice options for writers to find enjoyment in. The only real stipulation here is that neither Planets nor Locations can be submitted to the Codex. You can write a PC of the Tof species on Chaos as they could have immigrated into our Galaxy for any number of reasons. But, we leave it at that. The known galaxy has a billion stars within it. That's currently the realm of which we have to write. Does that make sense?

Srina Talon Srina Talon Well thanks for helping where you did, would've been real sad if my first time stretching my language-boi legs on this site ended with egg on my face. We're perfectly on the same page!

It's not like I planned on having him ever return to his homeland, or even have his homeland matter much in the grand scheme of things, simply the fact he's displaced for Reason A and is given enough freedom to express a unique culture, that's all I care about to be honest! So I am utterly fine with all of this, mainly, I just wanted to look like an extra nerd when I make posts with him with some drops of his native language and neat "this isn't how it is at home" bits. So everything is looking like it'll work out just fine!

Looking forward to mopping up the basis of this submission in the next day or so, the dictionary is gonna kill me, but it'll be worth it!

I am moving this back to Pre-Codex.

This is very novel, but my first note is that this is not formatted into an existing template. Instead, you seem to have made your own template for this submission. All Lore submissions must be structured/organized according to the Codex rules, which are current divided into:
You can add novel template fields as necessary, or borrow fields from another template, because the above will not account for 100% of every possible Codex submission. But your submission must (at its core) be done according to one of the above templates in order to be a Lore submission.

In this case, I would recommend structuring this as a Media submission. That is, a text on the galactic Tof language.

As a second note, spoilers are not allowed in Codex submissions. Images are the only exception to this rule.

Because this needs a comprehensive re-write, I'm going to move it back to Pre-Codex as a Work in Progress. When complete, feel free to tag me or any Codex staff.

I'm not trying to be finicky here, but the main point of this whole submission was that the language/dialect of Galactic Tof was varied enough that writing a firm textbook on how it operates is nearly impossible. This was something I was mainly doing so no other Tof player felt the need to be compelled to use this lore just because I created it.

Along with that, it feels kinda strange to me that things like species, religions, armys, can exist simply on merit of them existing, but a language has to be codified into a work before it can be submitted into lore. If it wasn't such a niche thing, I would suggest a language template be made, because it feels a bit prescriptivist to have to write a book in order to get the language to be accepted as lore.

None of this is meant to be a shot at yall, you all have been insanly helpful, just trying to keep on the up and up with all of this.

At the end of the day, I've put way too much work into this to not fix it. So, I'll reformat it as stated, I will say though, removing those spoilers will turn the page into an absolute mess.

At the end of the day, the rule is that you have to use the templates that exist. You have to use all of those template fields. But, how you do that is something you can be creative with.

If a text would not work, what about a holo-recording of a native Tof speaker? A National Geographic-esque holo-vid describing the Tof culture, with an emphasis on the role language plays in that?

Those are just a few examples of ways that this might get tackled.

Srina Talon Srina Talon feel free to archive it, I intend to rework it eventually but currently I don’t have the time IRL. Got some help with how to go about it though, so it’ll come back eventually
