Paper Bag Princess

(Post Soundtrack: "Edge of the Ocean" by Ivy)
She wasn't sure how much she liked this starship. Like so much of what the teen heiress owned now, it had been a gift, this one from her most influential benefactor. And as such, the solar sailer reflected more of Luminous Sun's tastes than her own. Even as small as it was, the yacht felt overlarge and ostentatious in the face of so many on Belazura, who had little more than a place to sleep and clothes on their back. The ship was clearly not cheap, showy in all the ways she would have found elegant and right a few years ago. Now she had to wonder, how many meals had it cost to make something like this?
Still, at least it was better than begging for a ride.
Zenie stared out the long windows at the expanse of water flying underneath them. Few would be traveling this way regardless. There would be no shuttles of tourists or curious onlookers boating out to the structure rising from the water just over the horizon. For Greenespace Corp, the dream of a new Belazura, one that straddled the divide between the tourism of old and the resource extraction of new, was a failure. For ZINO, the decommissioning of a fully-constructed, nearly-operational seascraper proved to be an opportunity too good to pass up.

"I thought you'd be too excited to sleep." Zenie heard the words drifting over her shoulder, turning to look back at Montin. She hadn't seen ZINO's Head of Logistics for almost the whole ride, they were too busy on some holocall or the other to finalize the details for their arrival. The young heiress had wanted to sit in on some of it, though after hovering for a while it was clear to her that the conversation was both too complicated and not for her.
"Oh, I wasn't!" the teen heiress declared, looking admonished by the charge. Not until the quiet chuckle from the enby did Zenie gather that she was being teased. Her mouth pulled into a cautious smile, her own amusement tempered by nerves. Montin had an off-putting manner with her, it was hard to know if their teasing was meant to charm or chide the teen heiress. "I was just looking at the pretty scenery. It's been a long time since I've been to the sea."
"No seas on Denon?" Montin asked, and they both knew the enby was aware of that fact. When Zenie shook her head, Montin supplied their own answer. "Just people, my guess. I never did enjoy crowds like that. When I was young enough not to have a choice, I'd always volunteer to show any guests to their rooms when the hotel was hosting a convention."
"Then it'd just be you and those guests," Zenie filled in, marveling a little at the cleverness of it. It had been a while since Montin had shared anything with her beyond the business of the day.
"Exactly. Some of my coworkers only wanted to help the VIPs, so they could kiss their assets." Montin grinned as Zenie stifled a giggle. "Sometimes you have to seize the opportunities no one else wants, even if they think you're crazy for it."
The young heiress considered the enby's words, glancing back to the scenery out the windows. The beaches and shallows had quickly receded, opening up to the broad stretch of coastline growing farther away. The seascraper was a bit like that opportunity Montin was talking about. It hadn't worked out for Greenespace, so what made them think it would work for ZINO? "Is that why you had this bought for ZINO? Because it's an opportunity?"
"And because it's a little crazy if you think about it." Montin chuckled again, and rose up to their full height, a full head taller than Zenie herself. The young heiress stood as well, sensing the end of their journey. "Greenespace is going to meet us at the landing pad. They're just finishing pulling out, it'll just be a few more days until we're free of their personnel. In the meantime, we'll get the chance for them to show us around and make the handover go more smoothly."
Zenie nodded along, smoothing out the creases in her outfit, windproof and characteristically green to fit her tastes for once. No braids today, just the long, rippling waves of her blonde hair she had brushed the tangles out of. That was enough for today, the Belazuran girl wasn't expecting to give a speech or be in public. She was just here to take a look at the new place, the new opportunity, that they might be able to turn into a headquarters for her campaign. Zenie knew Ms. Sun would disagree with her when she put comfort ahead of appearance, but today she wanted the chance to see everything, no matter how many kilometers it put on her Globex sneakers today.
"It'll go well," she told ZINO's point person for today. Maylon had already been on site to check it out, he and Tanja were elsewhere today. Kei would come later, when there was something exciting to share about the place. Today would be easy enough, just taking a look at the place and exploring everything it had to offer. Zenie wasn't expecting much from it, most of the resort side had still been waiting on shipments of furnishings and equipment, and the rest had been left unpacked. That would give her and the Z-Runners plenty to do for a while.
Zenie glanced around at her fellow Z-Runners, finally eager for the adventure to begin. The ship was quiet underneath her, the shift in scenery outside gave the only indication that it was descending toward the giant structure floating on the ocean. Like most things on her changing world, the truth of the seascraper plunged far deeper than the surface, its subaquatic levels promising wondrous views of the coastal reef underneath them. "Are you all ready to see our new home?"
She just knew it would live up to the promise in her voice.
