Dominion The Bryn'adûl | Marshland Slaughter at Riileb

The Bryn'adûl | Marshland Slaughter
aaron-limonick-marsh-fortress-new-hi.jpg

The planet Riileb is a hot and torrid world, prime for the taking. We will use it to buffer Varl, and further assert our control over the Marra Corridor. However, this world will not be so quickly taken - Riileb is home to their native species, insect like sentient warriors that number in over a hundred million. We will take the fight to these Riileb insects and attack them in their marshland homes and we will eradicate them from this world.

Riileb and its resources will be ours. One more step to bring the truth of strength to the Galaxy!

Objective: Rip, Rend and Raid
Fight through the labyrinthine cities of the insects. Destroy their homes, destroy their cities and wipe out their military presence. Flush them out into the marshes were they will burn and die.

Objective: Hunt
Some Riileb's have escaped into the marshland islands, find them and eliminate them before they attempt to escape.

He navigated through the narrow hallway, their cities were massive and maze-like. Their insectoid warriors were smart, this was their home territory. It was something great to behold, not too far away their army rolled through what parts of the cities they could. But, some were so intricately designed that traversal for large creatures and battle groups were very difficult. However Tathra knew that it would only be a matter of time before they broke through and attacked the main city. He knew that there would only be so long that he could savour this intimate combat before these insectoid creatures were rolled over by their military war-machine.

He was following a track of footsteps, but it had gone cold as the trail turned to the walls around him. It seemed the Riileb natives had built their structures so that they could move across multiple surfaces, somewhat similar to a hive.

“Interesting…” Tathra spoke to himself, placing his hand over the grooves in the wall.

It seemed that different patterns, no doubt meant to resemble their hands and feet, were interwoven into the wall in strange patterns. Interesting indeed, but his investigation of the architecture was interrupted by the sound of movement. Tathra stopped moving, listening intently. There were six, maybe seven of them. But only three of them were close to him. If he acted now, he could take the first three before the others got close enough to help.

Tathra waited, a few seconds more and they'd be close enough to be in range of his weapons.

The marshes, unfavorable terrain alone, even more so when the opponent knows it well. From vines and unseen dips in the soggy landscape to the sound emitted by Sethrak's heavy footsteps, the territory was sure to pose an issue.

Regardless, the Warlock signaled his group forward. Some foes had escaped, and a Warlock was a great candidate to hunt them down due to the ability of the force allowing him to sense traps and lifeforms... If the hunting party was close enough.

Sethrak was yet to sense anything bigger than a snake, but surely the party was close. Perhaps he should have ordered a more reckless hunt, ripping through any obstacles. The bug-like opponents were likely laying a trap, or had escaped by now. Certainly they moved faster than the Warlock. Unsure of his choices, Sethrak made no changes. They wouldn't charge into a trap, even if the enemy did escape. Ah, inexperience, if only Tathra were here, rather than the labyrinths.

This was too close quarters for his Axe however, he would have to rely on his Sword. He could hear them, every beat of their heart, every breath. He lowered his hand from the wall, standing nearly completely still. He could hear their hands loosening against the walls as they readied to pounce, or the first at least. Just like his own, their hearts began to pound with eclectic speed, adrenaline rushing into their bodies as they prepared to attack him.

From what he’d seen earlier, they were roughly the same height as most Brutes, it made for a change. But it also made fighting in these narrow pathways difficult for them as well. He could divide them if he tried. The closest was on his left side, above and behind him. Tathra quickly shifted his sword into his right hand; waiting. Only a few moments passed before the first lunged, Tathra turned around quickly - he’d been waiting for them. His left hand halted the approach of the creature as it dove from above; its upper chest and throat caught in his massive paw.

The moment was drawn out, dead-air filling the passageway as surprise and awe stalled the response of the creature in his grasp’s companions. Tathra looked into its disgusting face for a split-second, his eyes switching to a vibration based form of vision, noting at least a dozen heartbeats. His hearing had been off, there were nearly twice as many as he’d thought.

The Titan turned on his heel, bringing his left arm overhead as he swung the Riileb native into and through the enclosed wall, ash and debris falling over his shoulder as the insect’s body scraped across the wall before being slammed into the ground beneath Tathra’s feet.

Fire and brimstone.

That was what the Phalanx formation of the 10th left in their wake, slowly and surely the hundred man group known as the Phalanx of the 10th moved through the streets. The insects lay as puddles of flesh more than anything else. The edges of his Tower Shield burnt hot, the flames of their surroundings heating up the metal slowly. Galak levied his minigun through the centre of the Tower Shield, the hundreds of bullets cutting through roves of the retreating insects.

They were everywhere, on the walls and in the streets. Vermin. Galak sprayed down dozens until his turret ran red hot, overheating and causing the Emissary to fall behind the ranks of his Phalanx Brutes The artillery Murdaks behind them firing heavy explosive mortar rounds into their passage ways, hundreds of the creatures burnt alive whilst others were killed by the shrapnel of the mortars. Brutes and Drones alike moved in squads to attack in their flanks, flushing the Riileb creatures out into the open where they could be slaughtered.

The shield tower retracted into two folded pieces on the upper and under-side of the turret, allowing Galak to carry it normally. The Brute Emissary returned to just beyond the combat lines, returning to the medical tent to check on his wounded. An Ashaka healer greeted him with a nod as the Brute Emissary silently watched the wounded soldiers.

As he attempted to rise, he found that his victim had been a trick. Above him, nearly every Riileb held some sort of spear, several blades went for his exposed flesh. Rather than losing an eye, he brought his left arm in-front of his face, the large blades of the spears stabbing into his flesh as he struck the other away with his sword. As he turned on his feet, Tathra grasped one of the spears digging into his shoulder and yanked, pulling the native down to the ground. The insect slammed into the floor, growling in its own animalistic way, slime and grool pouring from its mouth as he held onto the spear.

Tathra used his body weight to his advantage, throwing his left foot back as he tugged on the spear; using his strength to forcibly pull the spear forward. Insects were notoriously light-weight after all. The creature came flying towards him alongside its spear, Tathra kicked out with his right leg at the left side of the native, knocking it flying backward into the wall. The creature bounced as its skull cracked against the surface, crumbling to the floor alongside the first.

The Riileb natives moved above him, repositioning as one dropped down on either side, seemingly cornering him. Tathra moved close to one, throwing the spear in hand at the further one at incredible speed - missing by inches. He waited until the insect attempted to thrust its spear. When it did, Tathra darted to side; switching his sword back into his left hand as he grasped the spear in his right - pushing the blade deep into the wall, side-stepping backwards and inside of the ground of the insect warrior, his weapon now trapped as Tathra swung overhead; attempting to cut through his head.

The insect dodged to the side taking a small knife from its thigh and thrusting for Tathra’s chest. These Riileb’s had better reflexes than he thought, something he’d had to account for. He didn’t have time to try and catch him, he just had to. With every second of his back turned, he risked a spear coming through the back of his head.

The blade cut into his flesh, but he displayed no visible reaction as he reached out, grasping the Riileb by its collar. Thud. Thud. Quickly the insect was crushed into both walls, one after the other, its bones crushed as it crumpled to the floor, freed from his grasp as he tore the spear from the wall as the others approached.

Objective B

The body fidgeted for a moment before slamming into the ground, the lifeblood oozing out of the gaping wound in its torso. The round had impacted several strands of vegetation in the process, giving a clear indication of exactly which direction the shard had come from, and the sheer force with which it had managed to pierce the corpse. Osam gave something akin to a smile in response to the successful execution, nodding to his Marksman for another shot well performed.

In truth, while it was important that many of the native insectoids were exterminated, the Major had decided that it was also a fantastic opportunity for well-needed training among his companions. It had taken a great deal of coercion, but he had managed to secure a squad filled with the Marksmen, with a single Grenadier to provide backup in case the situation turned untenable and they required heavier hitting weaponry. While other Sraelvun went about the process of hunting elsewhere, and Draelvasier scoured the location, Osam had used the apparent weakness and high number of the bugs to give his lesser an opportunity to hunt in the more traditional sense.

A shrill shriek alerted him to the presence of another runner, perhaps a few dozen yards away and getting away rather quickly into the undergrowth of the marshes. He patted the Sraelvun on the shoulder, jutting his finger out towards the target, and a moment later the crack of the high-powered Spiker 2A echoed out over the area followed by the splash of a fallen native.

Tenth kill.
Krarolk drove his glaive through the chest of a young Riileb, ending its life before the blade plunged out the other side. Nearby, Abvor and their Commander hunted alongside the Zealot Elite. Like many others working alongside them, the Zealot Elite trio had been assigned to ensure that none of the natives escaped the inevitable destruction of their cities and their world. Around them, small fires were scattered across the vast swamplands, the pattern only broken by the distant ocean. While the planet was largely aquatic in nature, the Zealots had been lucky enough to find a group of islands on which they had begun their hunt. Still, there were plenty of challenges that the squad had faced even before encountering the Riilebs.

The swamps of Riileb were hot and humid, the air as thick and hot as burnt meat. The Zealot Elite trio had stripped off most of their joint armor plating to reduce any excessive insulation; however, their bodies were slick with sweat within minutes of arriving on the planet's surface. Additionally, the soft and muddy ground yielded easily under the weight of the Zealots, especially the bulkier Abvor. Consequently, every step forward that they had taken required the strength of four, and sprinting was nearly impossible. It was a miracle that none of the task force had been sucked into a quicksand pit, though Krarolk suspected that they might soon have such an experience.

Once the trio started encountering Riileb seeking refuge away from the cities, they decided to utilize strength and range instead of speed, as the lithe Riileb could navigate the swampy ground much better than the Byrn'adul ever could. So far, their strategy had been reasonably effective, with dozens of Riileb being ripped to shreds by Krarolk's axes and the guns of his comrades. Still, even as he achieved his tenth kill of the day, Krarolk couldn't help but wonder if he could do more.

Ever since he fought the Jedi on Yurb, Krarolk had suspected that he could use his inner energy for more than simply imbuing his weapons and himself. If he could use his power to manipulate the environment around him like the female Jedi had, then he could use the natural advantages of the Riileb against them. Taking advantage in a brief break in the fighting, the Zealot Elite reached inwards and called forth his spiritual energy. The pond rose within him, flowing downwards at his command. He had practiced for weeks, always to no avail. But today felt different. Krarolk transferred his energy down beneath him into the mud of the swamp, sensing it glow as it was enhanced. Riding an adrenaline high on his success, the Zealot used his mind to move the mud beneath his feet upwards, making him perfectly level with the ground.

It might not have been much of a feat, but Krarolk had sent his energy outside his body and weaponry for the first time.

The second Riileb on the ground rushed him as the others dove from above, Tathra blocked several thrusting strikes from above, bringing the sword high as the spear wielder thrust for his stomach; Tathra brought the sword into the path of the spear, forcing it to the left. The insectoid cried with rage, infuriated at its failed attempt as Tathra thrust the spear through its neck and head, pushing the body away by throwing the spear to create some space as the rest of them closed the distance. As quickly as he had a moment of respite, another spear came for his face; Tathra knocked it aside with his sword as another struck his left cheekbone, chipping off a chunk of his carapace. The Titan growled, reaching up with his right hand and grasping the mid-length of the spear as he turned on his right foot, pulling down hard on the spear as he slashed upward with the sword; as quickly as the insectoid came down he was split in half.

Three more dropped down into the narrow passage with him. Above, more and more crawled along the walls. The two closest to him stood beside one and other, the third moved to close the gap as he engaged the two. The first brought the spear up into its armpit stabbing for just below his pectoral, Tathra turned on his heel, throwing his sword into one of the Riileb warriors above him, its body falling behind them with the massive sword buried in its body as he engaged the two insects in hand to hand.

He blocked the first spear with his left hand, catching the second on the outside of his right gauntlet and pushing it away as he thrust into a punch to the Riileb's face, his left foot rising and stomping on the knee of the insect to his left, cruhing the leg inward and causing the creature to scream in agony as it fell to one knee. Tathra knew the third riileb on the ground was getting close, Tathra brought his right foot between the two insects he was fighting, turning on his right heel as his right fist struck the head of the kneeling insect, crushing its head into the wall as his left arm came round, elbowing second insect in the throat as he grasped the spear in his right; thrusting it forward to meet the attack of the third.

The Primarch guided the Shamans under his command, they weren't able to use Servitors here. The way the insectoids had designed their cities seemed to make everything hinge upon itself. They couldn't safely sink anything without dragging the whole city partially with it. The casualties on their own side would be problematic.

Thusly, various smaller creatures were put into use. The Draeyde moved through the streets in their flocks, hundreds at once cutting through dozens of people, turning them into mulched flesh.

He felt tired, worn down. But he did not allow that to stop him, the crusade waited for no one. Not even him. This was their way, he would have the moments of respite he needed to keep going. But Drek'ma felt it, something was on the horizon. He could not yet tell as to what, but in their near future something would happen. The Seers felt it as well. Perhaps he was worried more than tired. He did not know - could not know.

The Rhivaks moved through the city, cutting through the buildings like paper. The Murdaks were newer additions and welcomed ones, they bolstered the line of Galak's new phalanx guard. It seemed it was a time of renovation for the Bryn'adûl, the Primarch had his own plans at work following what had transpired at Yurb.

Galak continued past the tent, walking up a few steps of their impromptu command centre as the large Brute set down his turret, the massive weapon thudding against the ground when it did. Galak looked up to the Primarch, a snuff of steam escaping him as checked his gauntlet. Galak slowly made his way up the steps, trudging slowly as he made his way up toward Drek'ma and his Shamans.

"Shaman Primarch." The distilled and augmented voice of the Emissary came through his helm, his red eyes sat sunken inside its frame staring at the Shamans and then directly to the Primarch helmet.

Galak walked up the final steps, looking over the command screen as his helmet actively retracted into several pieces. Galak looked over the tactical feed, it was a slaughter.

"A battle to be recorded in the memory journals, no? A true slaughter. The Murdaks fight well, Primarch."

Another of the creautres leapt from the walls, dropping onto his back, driving its spear into the space between his collar-bone and throat. Tathra growled in pain, dominant hand shooting up and grasping the spear to hold it in place as the insect began punching and crawling at his face. His right hand still held the other spear, using it to keep the last Riileb warrior on the ground at bay. Tathra turned around, raising the spear and thrusting it into the chest of the insectoid he'd taken it from; using his momentum to throw his back against the wall, crushing the legs of the Riileb on his back as he snapped the spear at the hilt, and threw the insect overhead.

The last on the ground struck at him again, going for his throat. Tathra did the only thing he could ducking low as he used his left gauntlet to push the spear upward, opening his palm - calling the sword to his grasp. The weapon slid from the corpse, flying toward him and cutting off the leg of the third warrior as it spun into his grasp. Immediately, Tathra turned the blade on the riileb on the floor beneath his feet, bluntly thrashing it with the cross-guard, cracking its skull into dozens of pieces before kneeing it into the adjacent wall.

Another leapt from the wall, but this time Tathra was ready, using his sword first he pushed aside the spear before using his right arm to fling the insect overhead and out of the exit of the passage way. The Titan quickly followed the momentum, darting out of the passage way and following as no doubt the rest of his kin would. As soon as he stepped outside of the passage way, he could hear several more foot falls as they swarmed from the walls to the ground to meet him, from the passage way; others threw spears to slow him down, luckily the first two missed. Tathra closed the distance between himself and the lone Riileb as the insect rather choose to go on the defensive, refusing to attack until its kin drew closer. He could hear them, four approached rapidly as more spears came flying toward him.

Tathra struck to the mid-section of the spear, the Riileb shifted into a long-hanging left guard; simply directing Tathra's momentum before bringing the low end of the spear and its blade spinning upward and toward him with its left arm. Tathra side-stepped, getting beside the insectoid warrior as he struck its back with his right elbow, knocking it into the fire of the spears but also turning to face his four attackers.

There were a lot of insects. She often thought of her enemies as such, but she didn’t quite expect to have to fight literal ones. They didn’t even look like proper insects that she had ever seen, they looked like mammals, kind of. They wer4e strange, weak and seemed to prefer ranged weapons, which she didn’t like. Not to mention, the area appeared to be somewhat annoying, both for her and then.

She slowly submerged herself into swampy water and swam through the marshes. She preferred this to joining a proper assault anyhow. Her head rose above the waterline, seeing if there were any creatures nearby, there were. Four of them on foot, trudging through the water, either trying to escape or moving to join the fight, probably the former. She swam over to them, slower than she ordinarily would have, but faster than they were.

She moved behind on of them, and pulled him underwater, pressing his head into the mud below, pushing it underneath and thus trapping him there. One of the creatures turned around to help, and she dragged him under too, crushing his throat in her clench. She stabbed the one below her with her weapons to make sure, then moved along to follow the other two.

The Primarch's attention was torn away from the situation at hand as Galak approached, the Emissary looked much more.. robust in his new armour. It certainly provided a great deal of protection and versatility, especially with his new love for incredibly large weaponry. It seemed more than anything the Emissary had devoted more and more resources to ensuring the protection and firepower of his new Phalanx unit was as impressive and reliable as possible.

Every day, their war-machine grew stronger. Against adversity and trial after trial, Galak showed that he was an exemplar student of the Chieftains teachings. He had made Galak the incredibly warrior he was today.

"Emissary." Was Drek'ma's sole response, intending to return his attention to his units. But it seemed Galak wanted to talk, though he wasn't sure why.

He turned his attention to Galak, delegating his duties to the Shaman Beast Masters at his side.

"Indeed. Is there something you need, Galak?"

Galak could smell it on Drek'ma. He didn't want him here, it was dangerous to assume but something was off. Galak thumbed over the edge of the large tablet, looking at the Primarch as he moved to meet him. Again, it seemed like some thought he needed babying after his injuries, but Galak felt stronger than ever somehow. He felt bolder, but his weakness was his insecurity. He knew that, but it didn't stop him from behing guided by it.

"Are you intimidated by my being here?"

Galak prodded, grinning under his cover helm as he waited for Drek'ma's reaction. Galak was going to make it clear he was no child, no naïve crestfallen Brute. Galak was an Emissary - a representative of the Chieftain and he intended to exact his will as he saw fit. His Phalanx were only the beginning. He looked to the map, reviewing the tactical information. Maybe not so much something for the records, but they had countered every tactical strategy the insects had. Not quite a tough fight like Yurb, but they numbered in the millions.

All the same, Galak was proud of his efforts. He would ensure his operations were tight and efficient, he looked upon his past with some measure of shame. He would never be the Galak who allowed himself to be cut down by debris again.

Never again.

He had no immediate reaction to the Emissaries goading, the Primarch retained his unblinking gaze as Galak seemed to feel out the atmosphere of the surrounding area. Somehow he did not think this was why Galak had left his post beside his brethren - to attack him? No. He wasn't like this, or at least wasn't before. If that was the case, Drek'ma was disappointed.

But perhaps that was exactly what the problem was, Galak expected disappointment or for others to expect him to be weaker or making mistakes. Maybe he would - maybe that was it. Mistakes were made, but to rise above ones mistakes was what being Draelvasier was. No one here forgot who Galak was, or what he had done for the Bryn'adul. He was valued, but perhaps his value in himself was the issue.

Though, Drek'ma would not appear weak. Not in their world.

"Intimidated? No. Curious, yes."

A spiker round dropped a native as it attempted to run, another dropped as the spike rifle caught the insectoid slime in the leg. The Riileb fell on its knee, placing its hand on a tree. Gredak smiled, twitching his rifle from left to right, firing at the hand placed on the tree; pinning it in place.

The spike rounds would start doing their work, burning through the flesh of the Riileb native as it howled in pain. Gredak backed up into the foilage, waiting. His bait had been set and now only time would tell if it would be a success. Two arrived, the first looked around as the second tried to take the spike from the hand, burning it. Gredak couldn't help but snarl, raising his spiker as the two tried to free their kin in futility.

One turned, looking around them and stopped frozen in place. It was looking right at the barrel of the spiker, and behind it the yellow eyes of the Zealot. Gredak dropped the first looking in his direction before a word could be spoken, the spike round crushing its head inward as its body fell opposite the one remaining attached to the wall. The second, he shot twice in the chest as they turned and ran.

The last pulled helplessly at its hand stuck to the tree, wordlessly panting its last final breaths as Gredak fired another shot through the back of its head.

The blasts hit him square in the chest, knocking him off his feet. Whatever the explosion was, it was followed by several others, and then a hail of lasers. Sethrak did not bother to order his squad to return fire, they knew what to do. Lasers and Hot metal now flew in every direction, as Sethrak jumped to his feet and drew his Val'Shay spear, spinning it in a circle. The barricas oil that covered the weapon did its job as lasers hit and bounced off in all directions, sizzling as they hit the swampy lands.

The defensive stance allowed him time to assess the situation: Evidently the insects that escaped the onslaught were greater in number than expected. There was a small army here. However.. They were inaccurate, and seemed to lack equipment. Were they civilians with blasters? Several planets had used civilians to fight, and sometimes they volunteered. That was likely the case. The insectoids knew they couldn't beat the Bryn, and chose to run, and now they had set an ambush

Regardless of their lack of training, sheer numbers could beat any foe, especially when they had the high ground as this particular group did. Furthermore, Sethrak and his troops occupied a particularly wet section of the marshes. Moving too fast resulted in slipping, tripping, and other unfavorable movements.

Inexperienced as he was, Sethrak had spent time previously to train his mind, and he's no fool. He signaled his troops to take cover, and limit their engagement. They did so, however some were not quick enough as they found themselves overwhelmed by enemy fire and fell to the ground, a smoking piece of flesh.

Sethrak followed the men, blocking as much fire as he could with his scolding hot weapon. He would need renforcements from the others if he was to repel this ambush. Raging at his failure to prevent this situation, he called the force to communicate with Sarask Hiskt Sarask Hiskt , Kad Kad , and any others on the Hunt.

Why was he always the one to be put in these situations? He always needed help. So weak. He had half a mind to try to assault the superior numbers to prove himself, but ge knew it would fail. It was best to wait, as always. So he shall.....

The presence of a sudden commotion elsewhere in the marshlands drew the attention of the Risen Major. While his own Sraelvun squad of Marksmen continued their hunting, utilizing the occasional straggler as target practice for their longer-range firearms, Osam instead chose to investigate the commotion further, hearing the sound of what might've been an explosion followed by blasterfire. Given the elevated position they had chosen for their sniper work, it wasn't terribly difficult to see what was occurring, though the distance between the two groups was significant enough to make detail nearly impossible.

It seemed that one of their Draelvasier kindred had managed to stumble directly into a conglomerate of insectoids. The strange beings had apparently managed to scoop up a large enough number of refugees and warriors to pose a threat, managing to secure armament for many of them to better prepare their trap. The ambush had gone off suddenly, the stinking marsh hiding any trace of the insects before they had managed to spring out from seemingly nowhere.

Osam shrieked a command, getting the attention of the Sraelvun marksmen, and directing their attention to the fledgling firefight with a jab of his sharp finger. While there was little doubt that the Drones under his command would perform somewhat more poorly than others of their race in the same position, the strength of the Sraelvun was their uniformity, and with a growling shout they were commanded to open fire on any hostile which peeked out from behind the trenches and vegetation of the marsh.

Spiker rounds flew across the battlefield in support of Sethrak Sethrak .

At this range, and out in the open like this - he didn't have to rely on his secondary weapon. Tathra threw down his sword, left hand reaching up to grab the lower length of the Axe. The insectoids stopped, confused by the dropping of the sword. They began to encircle him, watching as he took the much larger weapon from his back. When it came into both his hands, the ruby blade exploded into a super-heated vapour. The few standing around him jumped slightly as they saw the massive weapon that they would now be facing against.

Tathra swung upward first, releasing a tidal wave of molten kinetic energy into the walls that held the spear flinging cowards, it lit up into fire as a few were hit whilst others scattered from the flames. With his underside exposed, those on the ground surged forward to attack him whilst his guard was raised. But they had been tricked, Tathra lowered his right hand - calling the sword to his hand and immediately swinging outward and catching three of the spears thrust his way. The swing lead them and his own arm upwards, putting the sword onto his back as he dove between the broken guards of his foes, dashing past the fourth spear he had missed and close to the third.

His left arm came down quickly, obliterating the Riileb native with the blade of the Axe, splitting him into multitudes of smaller pieces. His right arm shot low, grasping the mid-length of the shaft as he used his dominant hand as an anchor, bringing the lower length back out from under the second natives spear and around and back toward him in a reversed semi-circular motion, striking the native across the face with the metal of the Axe, crushing his skull with pure blunt force, taking him from his feet.
