Arris chuckled dryly. "That's two questions. Tsk tsk." She wouldn't quickly forget the 'rules' of their game.

"No, never have," she answered the first... Then the second. "Only one way to find out, yeah?"

She ripped the throttle - the back wheel jerked and slid as power fought for traction. They nearly crashed into one speeder, then the next, as the bike leaned towards one side and then the other. It finally straightened out as Arris peeled away from the chateau and rubber dug into the dirt path that led into the jungle.

She had to speak up. "Only been on repulsorlifts before!"

Traction took getting used to. The bike was very responsive, but in that it gave her trouble. She needed to learn how to be gentle with it, because it wasn't a vehicle that you fought.

She was starting to get the hang of it, though, and when the path gave them a straightaway, Arris decided to push the throttle further. But once they were up to speed, she eased off a little, letting inertia carry them for a moment so they could speak.

"You been with a lot of women?"

Arris had no interest in beating around the bush. She wanted to understand what kind of woman Quinn was, and given how quick she was to touch, how comfortable she was with intimacy, and the fact that she said it was how her gift worked, she could only wonder if intimacy was Quinn's element.

She grinned.

Quinn never expected Arris Windrun to follow any rules, but it seemed it was only her own. Her arms tightened around her waist as Quinn kept her attention full on the road, feeling the way the bike moved under them. Arris was a quick learner, seemingly understanding the bike faster than she did when she had learned.

The turns were hard, but the bike could handle it. She would have to reach out to Lysander and relay the information to him. Of course she wanted more speed, but she'd leave that to Arris to control.

They hit the straight, and that was when Arris finally asked her a question. Thankfully, she could hide behind Arris; it was a rather direct question and one that made the Echani think for a moment.

Hands tightened, gripping the fabric of Arris' shirt.

"Depends on what you count as a lot." Deflection, but it bought her some time to settle into answering it.

"A few, but I'm trying to be more selective." She needed to defend herself. Her body leaned a little closer as she mulled over her own history with intimacy. There were stains- ones that had broken her to pieces, one defining factor that made men terrifying to her, and others she wished she could erase.

"I'm not easy; it's not on a whim if that's what you're thinking…" If her grip could tighten further on the fabric, it did.

"There are certain people I want to connect with, on all levels…" she continued straight away. She looked up, watching as their speed blurred the world around them. Arris was the only thing she could focus on.

"I want that—" They zipped under the bridge, the echo of the engine roaring through it, possibly drowning out everything the Echani had said.

— with you…

They came out of the other end, and Quinn realized it was her turn.

"What's your impression of me?"

Arris smiled, though Quinn wouldn't catch it. She was quite amused at how the Echani took the question. For Arris, there was no reason to be offended or embarrassed by that question. Of course, she wasn't oblivious - she understood how it sounded, even before she said it.

Though when Quinn expressed her interest in Arris, the cyborg was caught off guard.

Momentarily, she tugged the throttle, nearly throwing it out of line before regaining control. It was approximately her choking on air.

Of course, they were playing a game, and Quinn had just asked her another question.

'Now, you asked me two...' Arris considered protesting.

Though she relinquished the snark and answered anyway.

"Where do I begin?" She teased. "I think you're a lot... Hard to read. Change your mind a lot. But I think it's because you doubt yourself and what you want. I think you live your whole life in a corner..." She wasn't off to a flattering start. "... But I think you're pretty cool when you're not freaking out over being shot. The fact that you helped me steal a bike? Well, let's just say my impression of you is improving every time we interact."

She gave the throttle more juice, accelerating the bike even as they approached a corner.

You're a lot.

Quinn's eyes narrowed slightly as she glanced up towards the back of Arris' head. A lot??

What did that even mean? This was not the answer that the Echani had formulated in her own mind. What she had thought of was something quite pleasant, but of course this was Arris, and the woman was honest. She answered and lived her life however chaotic honesty she wanted. Her face softened after remembering that.

Only further softening, with the blush from the previous questioning only resurfacing.

"Well, I only stopped freaking out because I was finally able to heal those stupid scars." She retorted quickly, remembering how terribly painful those bullets were. They took weeks to heal and even longer to cover up the scars on her skin. If they weren't going so fast, she'd reassure herself that they were gone.

It was annoying how accurate the Cyborg was; she had hit the nail on the proverbial head. Quinn was a lot of things, fuck, and insecure about a lot of her choices was one of them. But she was working on it, especially after realizing she wasn't going to be anything other than who she was meant to be.

She was done fighting it, something that Mercy seemed quite proud of.

Quinn pinched Arris, wondering if she'd even feel it; if she didn't, Quinn still felt better.

"Well, I'm finding you to be more admirable to be around than what I thought you were going to be too." She mumbled a little into Arris' back.

"You're frustrating, stubborn, and sometimes careless…"
She looked away towards the blurs of buildings and vegetation.

"But I trust you. I find myself fond of our interactions, even when you piss me off; I look forward to seeing you again."

Quinn once more found her focus on the back of Arris' head.

"I'm still mad at you about that casino ruse; my skirt still smells like blaster fodder…"

Scars?

Shit.

Arris - for all her insight - hadn't even fathomed that surface injuries had lasting consequences. A neural pathway changed in her mind. Suddenly, she felt the sting of empathy. Arris knew what it was like to hate or be saddened by the way something looked about herself.

And no, she didn't feel the pinch. All she knew was that Quinn was touching her. But that hadn't changed the moment she climbed onto the back of the bike. Scratch that - it had hardly changed since they arrived at the party together.

Although Quinn wouldn't see it, Arris smiled as she described her.

Frustrating.

Stubborn.

Sometimes careless.

That last one felt unnecessarily polite. Arris wouldn't have disagreed if Quinn found her careless to be entirely egregious.

But I trust you.

That hit her harder than she expected. Arris focused entirely on them, paying no attention to the rest of Quinn's words.

Suddenly, she nearly lost control of the bike. A bit of soil gave way, looser than Arris expected, and the back wheel slid towards the right. Arris brought it back with a sharp motion, but that's when the real trouble began. The bike was now off the beaten path, soaring through the thicket of jungle trees and their branches. It was rough terrain for a wheeled vehicle, and Arris swerved this way and that to avoid crashing.

It only lasted a minute before they came back out onto the path, but that...

"Close call," Arris exhaled.

She slowed the vehicle down and pulled off the path to rest a few feet away from a cliff's edge. It was a pretty view: sunset overlooking the sea.

Her foot smacked the kickstand into place, and she slowly climbed off the bike.

"You shouldn't trust me," she murmured.

Then, Arris reached into her pocket to draw a cigarette. "Hell... I'm sounding like a melodramatic idiot." She lit it and took a drag.

SL-0182’s response about close-quarters combat never had a chance to finish as the Terentasuar charged at the two with frightening speed. Every heavy stride sent a tremor through the ground, flattening the grass beneath its weight. The Slatessai reacted first as she threw herself laterally into the air with remarkable control. She cartwheeled over the grass in a smooth rotation, clearing the beast’s charge and its jagged spines protruding from its armored hide.

CT-312 reacted almost simultaneously. The repulsor pack ignited with a sudden burst, throwing the Scout sideways as the Trentasaur thundered past. She tucked one shoulder and rolled once through the landing. When her boots found the ground again, CT-312’s armored frame settled into a low kneel. The Nightspore rifle was brought upright. Braced against her shoulder as she fired before the spiked creature had fully cleared them.

BANG. BANG. BANG. A burst of plasma bolts struck across the Terentasaur’s broad flank in rapid succession. The Scout watched the impacts strike across the scales. One bolt ricocheted while the other two left scorched marks across the creature’s natural armored scales. The Terentasuar barely seemed to register the attack beyond an irritated twitch of its spikes.

This brought back an unpleasant familiar memory of Woostri. The light-infused stone constructs CT-312 and the other Troopers had encountered there had been much the same. Firing across the hardened body had accomplished almost nothing. Concentrated fire, however, had eventually worn through even the hardest material. With enough aggravating amount of persistence would begin to fracture what initially appeared impenetrable.

The enormous spiked creature turned its head from side to side. Its attention moved first toward SL-0182 and then back toward CT-312. Trying to decide which of the smaller hunters warranted its aggression first. BARCA used the moment to scan the creature more thoroughly. A wireframe silhouette appeared across the HUD, highlighting areas where the distribution of scales and protruding spines were thinner. Ping. Markers settled over the legs and arms— the joint.

CT-312 saw SL-0182 beginning to line up a shot. The Scout immediately tightened her aim, holding down the trigger.

BANG—BANG—BANG—BANG—
Successive plasma bolts hammered itself into the rear right leg of the Terentasaur. The first impacts blackened the overlapping scales. The next shots struck the same marks again, repeatedly.

Muscles tensed beneath the creature’s armored hide, initially bracing itself against the assault… But after several shots later it seemed to realize the rifle fire was incapable of immediately penetrating its defenses. Its posture loosened as a breath blew from its nostrils. The repeated impacts continued against one side of its body like an incessant tapping. Annoying rather than dangerous. Its enormous tail rose behind it. The spined length curled upward before beginning to arc toward CT-312’s side—

CRACK. SL-1082 fired. The plasma bolt struck the Terentasuar directly in the left eye. A violent howl tore from its jaws as its head jerked backward, stopping the beast in the middle of its tail swipe. One of its forelimbs scraped frantically across its face. Clawed digits gently brushing against the now ruined eye as blood began running between the surrounding scales.

Its massive spiked tail changed direction, sweeping across the clearing in a powerful horizontal arc toward the Slatessai. The roaring beast reacted blindly toward the source of its pain. Loose spines rattled violently along its scales before several dislodged free, sailing through the air toward SL-1082 like oversized projectiles.

CT-312 reloaded and continued firing at the same spot. The repeated plasma bolts impacts finally began producing something more substantial than scorch marks. Hairline cracks spread through several of the scales protecting the rear leg. Each bolt that struck close to the last, its heat and energy continued to weaken the same small area. The Terentasuar shook its head violently. Blood sprayed from the ruined eye while its remaining vision struggled to track both attackers. Its body rose onto its hind legs, before both forelimbs came crashing down.

The ground nearby trembled. Several weakened scales and smaller spines finally gave way under the combination of repeated blaster fire and the force of the stomping. Fractured pieces broke free and dropped into the grass. CT-312 adjusted her sights. BANG-BANG-BANG. The next plasma bolts no longer struck the armored scales. They buried themselves into exposed tissues around the rear knee. The Terentasuar immediately noticed the difference. It recoiled and a low snarl rolled deep from within its throat. Pain finally replaced irritation.

Its tail swept back in the opposite direction, sending another scatter of loosened spines this time at CT-312’s direction. BARCA filed the HUD with incoming trajectory markers. The repulsor pack ignited again. Launching herself sideways as the first spine punched into the ground where she had been kneeling. The camouflaged pattern on her Halcyon armor immediately blended into the uneven surroundings of browns and greens as her body dropped into the grass.

Another roar was let out, the Terentasuar altered its stance. Its massive body turned enough to hide the wounded rear leg from CT-312, while it angled its head that its remaining eye moved between the two huntresses. It took one step before stopping, something resembling hesitation in the creature’s movements. It realized the two small figures around it had divided its attention and attacked whichever side it left vulnerable. Individually, neither had posed much threat… but together, they had hurt it.

The spines covering the creature’s body began rising. They spread outward along its back, neck, and tail until the Terentasaur appeared even larger than before. Puffing itself out, doubling its size. “I believe you’re right about close quarters.” Its entire body began trembling. BARCA filled the Scout’s HUD with warnings. CT-312’s eyes slightly widen in realization behind the visor. “INCOMING.” The Terentasur thrashed its body from side to side. Spines tore loose from across its body in every direction.

CT-312 rolled through the grass as one buried itself into the ground where her torso had been. Another passed close enough to just scrape across the outer edge of the pauldron as she drove one hand into the ground and pushed herself forward. CT-312 dove back down before a third projectile sailed through the space above her helmet. She turned her helmet toward the Terentasaur, expecting another charge. Instead the predator bolted toward the wounded Uller it had attacked earlier.

Unfortunately the animal had made little progress toward the jungle. It seemed to be frozen in place as it stood unnaturally rigid in the grass. The Terentasuar reached it within seconds, jaws closed around the helpless animal. With the Uller hanging from its maw, the predator turned toward the jungle and retreated. Its damaged rear leg gave it a noticeable limp and the blood continued running from both injuries. The clearing gradually fell quiet again.

CT-312 pushed herself upright, brushing loose grass and soil from the front of her armor before surveying the debris scattered throughout the field. “SL-0182, status?” Her visor found the Slatessai while BARCA began examining the embedded spines. Several were coated with a translucent fluid. CT-312 crouched beside one, BARCA magnified the substance and began running it through the biological information available from the Terentasaur’s entry.

[ POSSIBLE PARALYTIC COMPOUND DETECTED ]

“Paralytic venom.” That would explain the injured Uller that was standing awkwardly in place. “Useful.” CT-312 murmured. As she rose, something reflected sunlight farther through the grass. Approaching cautiously the Scout noticed it was some of the scales that had broken from the Trenetasaur’s damaged leg. CT-312 turned it between her gloved fingers , allowing the sunlight to catch across its surface. She slipped one of the scales into a larger utility pouches attached to her armor. Her visor moved toward the smaller scattered spines. CT-312 took a moment, before deciding to carefully collect several venom coated tips before securing them separately.

As CT-312 regrouped with SL-0182, she tossed one of the reflective armored scales she found toward the Slatessai’s. “Good shot on its eye. Ready to track down the—” BARCA trilled privately through her helmet. CT-312 went quiet for a half a second before repeating it out loud, finishing her asked question to SL-0182 “—oversized pincushion?” Her visor looked back towards the immense forest and the faint trail the wounded Terentasuar paved.

Arris losing control caused chaos, and Quinn held on to Arris tighter than she wanted to. That small ounce of fear lingered, but she knew that if anything terrible happened, they would be fine. Quinn buried her face in Arris's back, her arms tightening around her waist, but everything was fine. They stopped, and Arris spoke again.

Quinn leaned back and nodded, acknowledging it was a close call.

As Arris moved, she spoke again, and Quinn's brow furrowed slightly. She was told not to trust someone who, in most cases, had been there when Quinn needed he r— stuck to what she believed from Quinn's understanding. She could have easily left Quinn in the casino; she didn't have to reach out, but she did.

When Arris moved, Quinn's hand clung to Arris. She didn't let go; she held on as much as she could while staying on the bike. One hand rested on the seat Arris had left, while the other still held one of her pockets. Quinn finally looked at the cyborg, her face soft as she tried to understand why Arris would say something like that.

"You are an idiot." Quinn finally spoke.

"Why shouldn't I trust you? You've done nothing to speak otherwise." Quinn shook her head, her grip tightening as she pulled Arris slightly.

"Don't say it's because you're an nerf herder; we are all assholes. You do what you say you're going to do… to me — that's someone I can trust."

Her eyes lingered on Arris as she kept trying to figure the woman out.

"I'm the princess… I'm supposed to be the dramatic one." She chuckled softly. "Going to share?"

She smirked weakly when Quinn confirmed that she was being an idiot.

Quinn was right again when she said they were all just as awful as each other. Or at least, that was how Arris interpreted it.

Arris offered her the cigarette, but not before taking another - albeit shorter - drag. The mild psychedelic helped the cyborg bury her pain and misery, far beneath the surface.

"Yeah..." She breathed.

Then, Quinn pulled against the cyborg's hand. Arris looked at her fingers for a second.

She walked over to the cliff's edge and, dragging Quinn along if she had to, looked out over the sea.

"I've just learned a long time ago to trust my gut. It's kept me alive this far. It's when I stop and think that things get really bad."

And so Arris glanced to the side, catching Quinn with her cigarette. She reached out to pluck it back, rolling it between her fingers.

"So, I guess...

"I don't wanna think about it."

She took a drag.

"And I'd like you not to think about it either. Whatever happens - happens. But it's a decision our guts make." Her words trailed off there.

The cigarettes Arris had bought in bulk always had a hint of whatever was needed. She learned that earlier; they felt good.

But that's what it meant to be around Arris.

Quinn listened, almost fully understanding the woman in this moment. Everything around Arris Windrun was an effort to feel good, not to worry about what the past brought, to live in the moment as long as it felt good. Quinn remained silent, listening to everything. It was nice that she didn't argue Quinn's stance on trusting her.

She huffed, almost amused by her words. Trusting your gut… It quietly reminded her of someone else, but she wouldn't say it. The small bits of the dark side she had shoved down Arris' throat gave her enough insight into the woman at her side to know she'd ruin the moment.

"Quite the philosophy." She smiled. The feeling she'd extended earlier, the one that had been floating around them the whole time, expanded. She let Arris feel how she was feeling, that semblance of freedom and the weight lifting. Quinn was a creature of habit; she enjoyed order because it meant she knew what was coming next.

Meeting Arris took her out of her comfort zone.

"I want to do that more, trust my gut and let things happen the way they're gonna happen." Her eyes settled on the scene over the cliff; she wondered if Arris had done this on purpose. It was quiet, ironically enough, leaving one to their thoughts.

She smiled and sighed.

"I'm always waiting for the inevitable, for something terrible to happen, then I sit in it, wanting to fix it." Her nose wrinkled at the thought, and to avoid thinking too hard about the shit she had gotten herself into time and time again, Quinn reached over and plucked the cigarette back.

She inhaled, feeling the effects again, feeling good all over again.

Her eyes flicked back to Arris as she held out the cigarette. Quinn wondered, far more curious than she should be with the woman beside her. Quietly, she reached through the Force, searching for the bits of herself she gave freely, and felt them course through the Triumvirate. Through that connection, Quinn let the warmth pass through.

The sun, how she felt in this moment, a warm peace that kept every horrible thing from creeping in.

"This is kind of beautiful," she said, smiling, but her eyes weren't on the cliffside sunset.
