Public The Beginning: Korriban Revolt

“This thing we have started…Just promise me we will use it to save the other camps.”

“I swear we will either free them…” Nat thrust his own rifle into the Zabrak’s hands, “Or avenge them.“

The prisoner took in a breath through the nose, deep, hoping it would calm his nerves. Instead he only caught the stench of burning bodies. Nausea rolled through him and he tasted bile on his throat. He wanted to vomit. To fall on his knees amid all the bodies around them. But he could not just stand there and watch.

“The comms tower,” he said suddenly, “If we can get to the comms tower in the camp we can start a broadcast the other camps will hear. The whole planet will hear.”

And… what? Rise up?

No.

But it could at least plant the seed of rebellion in their hearts. Nat’s head snapped side to side as the freighter pilots called out to him one after the other.

“Vega, Rafe, take on all the wounded and elderly you can. Please, get as many as you can off this planet. Free them.”

"I've got room for some passengers!" yelling to cut through the chaos

"Nawara, if you're getting people out, send them over. We'll make room!"

Overhead, an explosion detonated and Nat watched in disbelief as the wreckage of a TIE fighter came crashing down. Had that TIE just opened up on its sister craft? And there were more ships overhead that were not TIEs at all. He saw an AT-ST clambering along go down beneath a rocket fired from… from someone.

That was it, they must have had more allies than he thought.

Maybe. Maybe they had a chance after all.

“Varek, let’s go. The comms.”

With that, Nat sprinted through the desert beneath the rising sun toward the tall structure of the comms tower rising over camp three.

Seela drove her Sythra interceptor hard into the clouds as the Ghost Link fed a stream of fresh contacts into her awareness, with each hostile signature painting a pinprick of threat in her mind’s eye. Although the briefing had been short, she knew that an insurrection had broken out in Labor Camp 3. What she didn’t know was how the rebels had gotten enough starfighters and heavy weapons past the Blackwall to build up an insurgent force.

However, that information was of little relevance to her present tasking, which was to reclaim superiority over the airspace of Labor Camp 3.

Seela pitched her interceptor into a steep dive as she punched through the cloud layer and emerged into open sky. Her craft, with its low-profile flying wing design, was notably distinct from the dumbbell-like profiles of the antiquated TIEs that were defending the airspace. She would have expected the Sith military starfighter units stationed in this region to be flying Banshees. Instead, they flew ancient TIEs, which the rebels were making short work of with anti-air fire and at least three alphabet wing starfighters.

Her eyes widened as the enemy fighters launched torpedoes towards the Sith military units on the ground. Then, through the Ghost Link, her mind registered a friendly TIE signature being snuffed out from a highly improbable angle. She blinked, before turning her head to look directly at the TIE near it, with its nose pointed at the flaming carcass of the one that had just been shot down. Seela immediately noted it, the command transmitting through her Ghost Link to mark the TIE as a potential hostile.

That situation would be something for her to monitor. Nevertheless, Seela didn’t hesitate. Her lekku twitched as she honed in on an X-Wing ( Addison Porte Addison Porte ) and an E-Wing ( Jared Starchaser Jared Starchaser ) from just over two klicks away as she dived towards the two craft from above and behind. She called her interceptor’s targeting systems to life with a thought. The system vibrated a tone against her ear cones while it attempted to draw a targeting lock on the two rebel starfighters!

Varek had to admit some form of confusion in those moments. There were ships willing to take them. Willing to after all the years of imagining an escape, let them all be close enough to touch one, and Nat wanted them to run back towards the fences and fight. It created a resounding change in Varek at that moment as he gave the sky, that oh so freeing sky a glance. No he couldn’t leave her behind, she would try and rescue him if she had the chance.

The turn away from the shuttle felt like breaking his own bones.

“The comms?” he repeated, though Nawara was already moving. “Nat!”

An explosion swallowed whatever else he might have said. Varek hunched beneath the noise, his sore shoulder drawn tight against his ribs, then looked back towards the freighter’s open hatch. He could still go aboard. There were wounded to help, and he had offered to help them; nobody could fault him for doing exactly that. Nobody whose opinion ought to matter.

His gaze returned to Nat, growing smaller against the sand, and that unwelcome sense of duty sunk in.

“Ah, kriff.”

He pushed away from the ramp and ran after him, keeping low as he crossed the exposed ground. Each stride jarred his shoulder, and by the time he drew close enough to speak, he was breathing hard through clenched teeth. The rifle fire made him flinch even when it sounded far away. He wanted a wall beside him, a roof overhead, anything that might stop him feeling so plainly visible.

“We will not have to avenge them.” he managed. “They are still alive. They have to still be alive.”

The tower rose above the camp ahead, familiar from labour details when he had scarcely bothered to look up at it. Now he searched its base for guards, trying to remember where the entrance was and whether the door had ever stood open. Getting there would mean nothing if they reached it only to find themselves locked outside.

Varek glanced back towards the freighters, then caught at Nat’s sleeve.

“I know how to use it.” There was more pleading in his voice than he liked. “But be real with me Nat, those ships aren’t going to wait for us if we do this are they?”

A nearly powered down freighter slowly unloaded crate after crate out of a cargo bay door that seemed to occasionally... twitch. Things were not going as planned, or at least hoped. A half a dozen silent alarms were going off and on in front of the pilot as three computers of different origin attempted talk to each other and give orders. Three separate salvaged freighters wielded together like a jigsaw puzzle in which the pieces did not want to fit together. A quick visual inspection was enough to make any real merchant or fighter patrol go puzzled, but it was all well disguised by completely legitimate licensing attached to the pilot's computer.

All in all it was ugly, messy and very, very dangerous. However the pay day? That was making the risk worth taking.

Normally he'd have used his own ship with a false registration on a job like this, but the risks were too great. Instead they'd quite literally taken parts from three separate ships floating in space that couldn't be traced back to anyone but some shipping company who'd lost their freighter somewhere in the darkness of space about a month ago. Likely enough they didn't even know the ship had been hit by an electrical failure and vented out into space.

Something it as still continuously trying to tell one of the cargo lifts to do. Luckily it didn't speak the same programming language as the cargo hold's system so instead of dying they'd just dealt with a dozen off and on audible alarms. It had shaken, shimmied and stuttered all the way to Korriban but they were here now and the job basically complete.

Now they just needed to get off the damn planet alive.

"Alright, Pops, can we get this engine fired back up t-"

His words froze in his mouth as the screams of a TIE fighters' engines came in from the distance. He wanted to panic for a moment but stopped himself short. It's a Sith world, they could simply be a patrol. No reason to panic. Yet.

"Pops, engines?"The crisp old voice came in clear from his communicator, calm and sure despite the devastating news it delivered. "I'm not sure, Skipper, I think, yes, I think the Nav computer is under attack by one of the other systems. I can't seem to get anything fired up through the system. I'll need you to do it manually." A long pause came across as Crow dropped one of his last cases and began to turn back into the ship. "I wouldn't start it now though. The first one to lift off is going to look mighty suspicious to those fighters."Feth. The old man was right of course, but Crow didn't have to like it. Looking back at the three crates left in his hold he pointed them out to the prisoners and their organizers who's eyes were now twitching towards the sky. "Alright, friends, last three are there, feel free to grab them!" With that he began his scramble towards the interior of the ship when he heard the first sounds of fighting in the air followed by the explosion of a TIE fighter turning into a fireball.

So much for just dropping cargo and leaving, this place was already turning into a battlefield.

It changed nothing but the urgency of his task though as he ran into guts of the ship and began manually activating systems. After a few moments he felt the ship shudder into life the audible alarms again with their annoying nag that now was almost a relief. Now he just had to close the cargo bay and they could get out of there.

That was the plan at least.

The plan itself though was largely interrupted as about both organizers and workers began to take up positions inside of the cargo bay with their rifles and blasters calling on even more workers to get on board as the cargo hold began to fill with the living. This was not the plan. Get in deliver some goods and leave alive. It had been such a simple plan.

Capricia's eyes held Rafe's for a few moments. For a moment she was on the verge of telling him where to go, but then with a bit-back, "Hell," she turned and hurried down the ramp, grabbing a repulsorsled control on the way. She swung onto the platform and rode it down the ramp. At the bottom, she wrestled the crate of weapons off and used her multitool to jack the lid off.

"Help me with the wounded," she called to two of the men trying to get to the ship. "We'll load them noto the sled."

They jumped onto the sled and Capricia drove it to the far side of the pad, where the TIE fighters had strafed. Survivors were barely getting to their feet. "If you can walk, go to that ship there," she called to them. "If you can't walk, call out!"

They moved from person to person, gathering wounded people onto the sled.

The violence was horrifying. Some were missing limbs. Some were badly burned, smelling of burnt cloth and flesh. She couldn't seem to look away except when each fresh horror presented itself. Eventually, the sled was at capacity. "I'll come back," she promised, turning the sled around. When she got back to the ship, she called out to Kase, "Have we got supplies we can make these people comfortable with until they can be examined?"
