STRENGTHS
- Well-Armed: Tantaras act as fairly well-armed gunships with their mixture of energy cannons providing them with flexible firepower for a ship its size, whether its raking enemies at close range with its proton beam cannons or sniping enemy pickets with its long-range turbolasers.
- Fast: The Tantara has an unusually large fusial thrust engine block, which provides it with excellent speed.
- Light Defense: The Tantara has light framework in order to increase its straightline speed and little energy to spend on shielding after having so many energy cannons, which often makes it more poorly defended compared to the average heavy corvette.
- Low Maneuverability: The large engine block has been designed for speed, and combined with the ship's light build does not allow it make sudden maneuvers.
Designed officially for "proactive patrolling" by local defense forces, the Tantara-series is CorelliSpace's more aggressive take on the classic Corellian Corvette. While this lineage is easily apparent with a simple glance, the Tantara has a number of significant differences from its ancestor, largely in that while the Corellian Corvette was designed as a multipurpose starship, the Tantara is very clearly designed as an aggressive hunter. With a large ion engine block inspired by the Sundered Heart, the Tantara is exceptionally fast for its size and is often capable of overtaking smaller corvettes, let alone bulk freighters and larger warships. Additionally, most of the internal space has far more in common with the DP20, with its myriad of power conduits and extensive blaster gas reservoirs for its unusual mixture of energy cannons, which makes it reasonably flexible in a variety of small engagements. But unlike these previous Corellian designs, the Tantara-series uniquely has a well designed but compact hangar in its ventral center portion, with two sets of retracting lids which allow it to rapidly deploy a full squadron of fighters. This combination of speed, firepower, and starfighters makes it fairly popular with aggressive naval officers on the outer reaches of the galaxy, but the corresponding deficits in maneuverability and defense have made it less popular near the Core Worlds, where dense and massive naval formations frequently negate its strengths and amplify it weaknesses. Unsurprisingly, most Tantaras serve in local defense fleets, private security companies, and the ever present pirates and raiders that plague the Outer Rim.
