OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  • Classification: Genome-altering Retrovirus
  • Method of Consumption: Intravenous Injection
  • Average Life: Typically injected as a series of treatments spread out over two weeks. If the retrovirus is viable it should be able to replicate inside the user's body and persist indefinitely, or at least until the body is sufficiently altered to maintain the effect without it.
  • Nutritional Value/Allergies/Side Effects/Purpose: Synthisense is meant to confer or enhance Force Sensitivity in patients. In cases of rejection, common symptoms include headaches, hallucinations, memory loss, and organ failure; lengthy treatment may be necessary to stop or alleviate these symptoms. Headaches, hallucinations, and bleeding from the nose, ears, or eyes are often observed in successful patients if they push themselves in the application of their newfound Force Powers. Various other symptoms are listed non-exhaustively below.
    • Listener Syndrome is a rare condition in which the patient's newfound Force Sensitivity brings with it constant and uncontrolled use of Force Empathy, subjecting them to a deeply unpleasant 'psychic cacophony' when in crowded locations or near large groups of people.
    • Cardiac Arrest is disproportionally likely (four-point-seven times average) in patients that have undergone a Synthisense Treatment.
    • Blindness occurs in one out of every three Rodian patients; this risk can to a certain degree be predicted with careful genetic analysis.
    • Infertility occurs in roughly thirty-seven percent of patients. This is intentional, for the retrovirus is designed to prevent reproduction if its alterations reduce the viability of future offspring - Vysh-Kolluri does not want the PR disaster mutated babies would entail.
    • The detrimental effects sometimes associated with the use of the Dark Side may be intensified for Synthisense patients.
    • Has caused 'worryingly detrimental mutations' in the Force Dead. Further testing has been discontinued indefinitely.
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • The Synthisense Treatment comes in two distinct variants, the Basic Package being 'mass-produced' for species or other broad groups while the Premium Package is tailored for individual patients after exacting genetic examinations and consultations with expert bioengineers. As a result, it is considerably more expensive but also more likely to achieve optimal results and less likely to result in the worst side effects.
    • The Basic Package is met with rejection in forty-seven (47) percent of non-Sensitive patients, with forty-five (45) percent gaining some sort of attunement to the Force and the remaining eight (8) percent becoming properly Force Sensitive. Preexisting attunement raises the odds of success significantly but also increases the odds of rejection - likewise for those who are already (weakly) Sensitive.
    • The Premium Package is too rare/personalised for reliable statistics. The odds of success improve if an Alchemist is involved.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • Broken Chains: Synthisense can imbue or enhance Force Sensitivity; results may vary somewhat.
  • Risky Treatment: Synthisense brings with it a laundry list of potential side effects and complications.
  • Unreliable Returns: Synthisense is by no means guaranteed to work - doubly so with the Basic Package.
  • Diminishing Returns: Synthisense has little effect on average Force Sensitives and no effect or even a detrimental effect on the strongly Sensitive. It can make the ordinary slightly more extraordinary, but should not be trusted to enhance proper Sith or Jedi.
DESCRIPTION
Force Sensitivity is a complicated biological riddle many have attempted to solve, usually unsuccessfully. The Sith Lord Darth Plagueis is said to have made great strides in the area, but his research notes are sadly all but impossible to procure. Various arcane methods have been recorded through the aeons, but all lack mass appeal. The rare drug Midi-Synth is promising, but death is such an unappealing side effect.

Through the joint efforts of the pharmaceutical company Vysh-Kolluri and their backers in Greystone Mercantile, a drug (or more aptly treatment, as no one in their right mind attempts to self-apply it) was developed to meet a perceived demand. A gap in the market, as it were.

This somewhat dubious medical procedure is very rarely (immediately) fatal, but does have a rather poor success rate. The fact that half of all users are at risk of suffering organ failure without gaining anything would be enough to prevent its use - were it not for the appeal of power.

Individuals who have (successfully or not) undergone such treatment are encouraged to accept implants that continuously monitor their biometrics. Such implants are capable of alerting local emergency services if the user suffers potentially fatal side effects, notably cardiac arrest.

SLAPP suits are regularly used to intimidate anyone fronting libellous allegations that Synthisense is a product of Sith Alchemy.
