Porro knew that it was not the right way to go about things. But what he made on jobs with Sorr’s crew was barely enough to pay for living expenses (Porro didn’t like to live cheap) and docking fees for the Gambit. It was a lot easier to buy equipment when he was able to squat in his spot in the Iego system, but that got ruined when the owner of the docking facility found him. Porro was able to work off the past due fees, but he was going to have to pay going forward.
The Gambit was beginning to take form. The hyperdrive was up and operational making it feasible to fly the ship from its normal dock wherever Porro needed to go to pick up needed upgrades and equipment. He was forced to rent a D1 Series Astromech to make the calculations to travel through hyperspace as the navicomputer was not yet operational. To say that the ship needed to be cleaned up before Porro would present it as a marketable working ship was an understatement. The finish was horrible and it gave the appearance that the engines were going to conk out at any moment.
That was a hindrance to using the ship to raise more credits, but it came in valuable in some ports as the more high tech ones seemed to feel sorry for Porro and give him a discount on docking fees. That was the case here on Qena, which was part of the reason why Porro had chosen the planet. The other was that such a large city-planet was bound to have low budget hospitals that would have malfunctioning equipment and take in supplies that it simply didn’t need because beggars can’t be choosers. Porro felt bad for stealing, but knowing that what he stole wasn’t likely to be used by the people he stole from made him feel a little bit better about it.
Dressing up like a doctor was probably not the best move to get around the hospital unnoticed. The lab coat might have been an easy swap for his normal yellow trench, but his appearance didn’t exactly scream out “doctor”, even in an underfunded urban hospital. But he wasn’t about to be caught dead in nurses’ scrubs, not that there was anything wrong with nurses, just the scrubs were definitely not Porro. So as he walked through the hospital Porro did his best to avoid eye contact with anyone too close. From afar maybe he could make it work, but up close he would be found out right away.
He wasn’t exactly sure what section of the hospital he was in when he heard a group of actual employees approaching from a blind corner. He sighed and looked around quickly. There was an exam room immediately to his left, or he would have to turn and high tail it back in the direction he came from. That he guessed would be highly suspicious. He put his faith that the exam room was empty, or he would be able to charm his way through an interaction with whoever was inside and hope the group wasn’t destined for that room.
Stepping inside the room he closed the door behind him. He saw that there was a child and a parent in the room, so he reached out and grabbed the patient chart from where other rooms had empty charts and stepped toward the exam bed. "Well, what let’s see what brings us in here today,” he said looking over the chart and hoping something would make sense to him. ”I’m Dr…Tanau,” he said his eyes still down on the chart and giving up trying to come up with a fake name. ”I’ll be taking good care of you.”
This is part 3 of a short series of threads where Porro completes his ship. The first two parts have not been started yet.
