PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Layered Approach: Most starship sensor arrays are composite systems, using a variety of different sensor types to provide an understanding of the space around the system. StarSight is no different in this, but its components have each been optimized to work specifically well in certain range bands with some overlap between ranges to ensure smooth, almost seamless tracking. A powerful but narrow focused full-spectrum transceiver(FST) provides the using vessel with broad, general information at a very long range, allowing it to conduct most general detection and survey tasks. Middle range is primarily covered by a dedicated energy receptor(DER), which provides information primarily about energy signatures from ion drives, comlinks, shields, and so forth - providing much greater detail about objects detected by the FST. By cross-referencing infromation from the FST and DER signatures, StarSight can accurately identify known starship models and provide rough estimates of the craft's abilities if the detected craft is unknown or damaged. Short to mid-range is covered by a series of turreted targeting lasers placed across the vessel - they allow the StarSight to triangulate and provide precise information of objects in space even during general broad spectrum sensor jamming - allowing users to effectively track and target starships that are using such devices for defense. Lastly, for short-range use, the StarSight has dozens of miniature electro photoreceptors equidistantly placed around the craft. This provide the using starship with a panaromic view immediately around the vessel as well as much of the hull itself. This is particularly helpful in providing the user with a sense of his surroundings when flying in close confines, detecting boarders, understanding damage sustained by the craft, and detecting and tracking enemies that get very close to the ship itself. Lastly, the StarSight does have a few extra sensor input slots much like the Universal transceiver package that allows it to accept specialty sensors for special applications such as magnetic signature sensors, mineral spotters, environment scanners, heat detectors, and a host of other specialized sensors.
  • Advanced Data Processing: StarSight uses a Calor-series Bio-Computer to process raw data gathered from the sensors and then integrate different data sources together to form a composite understanding of the environment around it. Thanks to the exceptional parallel processing abilities of the Calor-series, it is possible for much of the StarSight's computing power to be put into interpreting data from one sensor type (rather than all of the sensors) which allows that particular sensor to be particularly more powerful or fine-tuned at the cost of effectively not interpretting data gathered by the other sensors. This is most commonly used to get a better understanding of long-distance objects (or to allow precise targeting at long-ranges) or to more quickly cut through electronic jamming and other electronic countermeasures.
  • Sensor Node: StarSight has been designed from the ground up a singular node in a combined systems sensor network that might also include starfighters, capital ships, vehicles, probe bots, planetary sensors, satellites, and other sensors platforms. In this way, StarSight not only automatically transmits data gathered by it to other members of its network, but it also can receive information from these other sensors and process and integrate just as if it were data gathered by StarSight's own sensors. Practical applications of this include StarSight-equipped starfighters acting as a spotters for capital ships or artillery. Conversely, StarSight could receive addition information from more powerful capital ship sensors to help burn through jamming much quicker or to provide specialty information that the StarSight's pretty basic sensors cannot provide, such as atmospheric analysis or materials analysis.
  • Combat Sensor: StarSight is designed from the ground as a combat-oriented sensor, not a survey sensor. To that end, it sacrifices some FST coverage that could have provided it better general information in all directions as well as a few common but nice to have sensors such as life form indicators. Instead, StarSight has unusually fast processing speeds, the ability to simultaneously track up to three dozen separate potential targets, and the ability to use weapons fire from the host ship as additional sensor information.
STRENGTHS
  • ECM Resistant: The StarSight's use of targeting lasers in the mid to short ranges as well as the parallel processing abilities of its Calor-series Bio-Computer mean that it can accurately provide targeting data to the equipped ship in most ECM heavy environments.
  • Long-Range: The StarSight uses a full-spectrum transceiver dish based on the ANq-51, providing it with exceptional abilities at ranges up to a quarter of a million kilometers - a typically far greater range than what is found in most starfighter systems and in some small capital ship designs.
  • Combat Sensor Package: StarSight is an optimized combat sensor package, allowing it rapidly process, analyze, and target many enemy craft even at great ranges.
WEAKNESSES
  • Follow back: If the StarSight's user is using the targeting lasers and/or other active sensors, it is usually a trivial task to both detect and pinpoint the location of the using craft.
  • Blindspot: While the StarSight's full-spectrum transceiver is exceptionally powerful, it accomplishes this by using a very narrow cone for excellent focus - this almost means that it weak resolution from the side angles and provides literally no information about what's behind the vessel.
  • Bare Bones: StarSight doesn't include many common and even cheap sensors found on many common sensor packages, such as life form indicators, that are frequenly found on civilian and survey vessels.
DESCRIPTION
Lucerne Labs has long relied upon 3rd party sources for many of its components, but with the economic upheaval caused within the Mid Rim by worlds (and the companies based on these worlds), access to some of these sources dwindled or only trickled in. In order to make the company more self-sufficient, Lucerne Labs began designing and manufacturing some of their own basic components, including their first ever starfighter scale sensor system, the StarSight. The StarSight borrows heavily in terms of basic configuration from the legacy universal transceiver package, which has seen in many of the company's first small craft designs. But as with many Lucerne Lab products, a premium was put into making it highly adaptable through modular systems and internal reconfiguration abilities. To that end, the heart of each StarSight is a small Calor-series Bio-Computer that integrates all of the information from the bare-bones sensors of the StarSight and turns it useful information for its users. As a system specifically engineered for combat use, the StarSight does not actually have a few common sensor types commonly found on civilian craft, such as a life form indicators, in favor of more tactical features such as targeting lasers and advanced tracking capabilities. Because of this niche focus, it's likely to become common in Lucerne Labs combat small craft, but unlikely to displace legacy systems in most of its civilian product line.
