+ Traditional Jedi: Strengthened by her resolve and lack of ulterior commitments, Shi-Yan is a staunch follower of the Jedi Way. She has no ties to her life before joining the Jedi, and is a loyal follower of Ashla. Owing to her need to defend others, she is a well versed practitioner of Soresu.
+ Jedi Sentinel: Opting for a more balanced and hands-on approach to her training, Shi-Yan took the path of a Sentinel; a capable diplomat, yet able to fight should the situation call for it, she is quite the jack-of-all-trades... Of course this means her skill-set is spread out, rather than specialized.
+ Battle Medic: While she is well versed as a Jedi Healer, a trusted face within the Hall of the Healers, Shi-Yan's forte in this regard lies more on the battlefield. Able to quickly tend to the wounded and pass them off once stabilized, she copes well under pressure.
+/- Jedi Apprentice: After the disappearance of her Master, Shi-Yan took her training into her own hands and appealed to the Jedi Council who granted her permission to become a Jedi Apprentice - a student who oversees their own path toward Knighthood.
- Without Guidance: Shi-Yan's decision to pave her own way has left her somewhat more isolated than the other students; having no Master to fall back on, and shying away from other potential mentors, every decision she makes - and every mistake - is on her own shoulders.
- Well Invested: If someone asked her if it were better to save one Jedi or a thousand civilians, Shi-Yan would always choose the latter if she happened to be that Jedi. A martyr to her cause, she would willingly sacrifice herself if it meant the mission was a success.
- Unspecialized: A little bit of this, a dash of that... Shi-Yan's situation has made it so that she is effectively a one-man-team, yet she isn't especially great with any one thing and can at times spread herself thin. She also doesn't know when to ask for assistance from her fellow Jedi.
STARSHIP
PRE-ROLEPLAY HISTORY
Shortly after her birth, Shi-Yan was left on the doorstep of the Grand Jedi Temple on Coruscant. There was no name, no note, and no way to contact her family. While the initial response of the High Council was to have the child sent to an orphanage, one Jedi Master spoke up in her defense and believed that she would have a better standard of life among the Order. She was tested for her midi-chlorian level, and it was found to be within the range of sensitivity.
Passed off to the Master, she was deemed his responsibility until she reached an age to begin training. He named her after Cala Brin and raised her to uphold the ideals of the Jedi's founding fathers; rocked to sleep to the sound of the Jedi Mantra, told great tales of Jedi long gone as bedtime stories, taught to trust in and feel the Force. And when the time came to begin her training he personally oversaw the initial stages. Her first telekinetic push came through his urging, the first training saber crafted by his hand.
Yet he was wise in his ways, for he kept a measured distance from her all the same. She was raised to view him as a teacher, not a father, and so there was no real attachment between the pair. When the Council decided it was time she joined the other students, he made no move to contradict them. And so Shi-Yan was placed into the Ronto Initiate Clan, and while her childhood Guardian watched from afar no contact was made between the pair for quite some time.
Shi-Yan took to all aspects of her training remarkably well, although she disliked it when her instructor insisted that she had to learn how to use her lightsaber offensively. Already a keen hopeful-practitioner of Soresu, Shi-Yan swore blindly that she would have no use for the likes of Djem-So... Although she knew that she had to respect her elders and trust in the Force. The child showed a great compassion and drive to render aid, and for a while it seemed as though she had a bright future as a Consular.
As the other students in her Clan began to approach Padawanhood, Shi-Yan was taken aside by her Guardian and - with the blessing of the Council - was asked to become his Padawan. Naturally she agreed, and under the guidance of her Master she further flourished. However not too long into their Apprenticeship Shi-Yan's Master dropped off the radar, during the sacking of Coruscant and the Jedi's relocation on Ossus, and was eventually pronounced MIA... Although she overheard many of her fellow Jedi claiming he was more than likely dead.
The Council tried to pair her up with several new Masters, none of which worked out, until eventually Shi-Yan asked to meet with them. There she made a case for self-training, and even put forth a plan of action. After much deliberation the High Council agreed to grant Shi-Yan the role of Jedi Apprentice, under the condition that she check in with one of them once a week with a progress report. She knew that any sign of difficulty or complication would mean returning to the Initiate program, or having a Master chosen for her.
While she did not show it, the loss of her Master struck a chord with the young Jedi. Deciding that she would learn all that she could in order to be an asset to both herself and the Order her dreams of becoming a Consular were sidelined in exchange for the life of a Sentinel. She trained extensively in Shii-Cho and Soresu, in an attempt to cover all ground, and when the Council deemed her ready she even began to undertake small diplomatic missions.
While she knew that traditionally the lightsaber of a Sentinel was yellow, she believed this to be far too obvious when in-the-field and instead opted to wield the green usually associated with a Consular. She took to attending medical sessions within the Halls of Healing, and while to begin with she was rather clumsy her concern for the well being of others was a large enough drive to have her pass the first stage of tests on her way to becoming a fully fledged medic and healer.
