- Hard-hitting Assault Ship: Unlike the similar, albeit larger, Caecus-class Strike Cruiser, the Shard-class Assault Frigate was not as speedy nor as minimally armored. It instead boasted rather well-rounded weapons and shields at the cost of maneuverability and higher levels of speed.
- Slow Maneuverability: While the Shard could accelerate rather quickly, it proved difficult to maneuver once it started moving. The idea was to advance, inflict damage, swivel, and then either fall back or push in deeper.
The final addition to the first phase of the Sith Empire's fleet improvement campaign, the Shard-class Assault Frigate bridges the gap between the smaller corvettes and the larger cruisers.
Possessing an inclination towards stationary combat, the Shard-class is best utilized to fill in openings in a fleet's defensive line. The ample weaponry and sturdy defenses allow the vessel to take enough of a beating without facing imminent destruction, simultaneously shielding smaller vessels from enemy fire while dishing back quite a good deal of punishment.
However, it wasn't uncommon for bold commanders to move their Shard assault frigates towards the enemy like a lance, punching through the weakest part of the defensive line while pouring in support ships to reinforce their gains. Otherwise they sit back and support other larger warships.
