Shadow Knights

1. Sounds good. Make her an NFU?

2. Kaida will have to work alongside renegade Angelii she once regarded as traitors (and probably fought against). Awkwardness shall ensue. May sub one.

Some thoughts on NPCs:

Naesala Faethyra: Obviously the Archon. We said that back in the old days during the reign of Anya's mother she was a disgruntled soldier who tried to take the initiative against pirates by acquiring spaceships and stuff, she got punished for breaking down the willow pallisade of isolation and deserted. Then returned due to the cataclysm.

Suggestion for class background? Commoner, lower nobility? Feel like making her an NFU, and a follower of Eldorai Arius.

Tarith Vintoli: Nicknamed Morwen ("Maiden"). Lower class Eldorai forcibly conscripted into Angelii. Deserted and turned rebel/terrorist. Long-time Dashdae Eldorai member. Maybe an Illyrian. Won't get on with Kaida at all. What could her skill set be?

Sophalia Kamath: The low born Qadiri soldier who caught Kaida's eye during the expedition to Qadiri India. Maybe she ended up joining some sort of Eldorai native auxiliary force, but leaves due to the racism there. Could ironically have a decent relationship with frost elf.

Kar'zun: Need a walking, talking rock because Kar'zun need some love.

Shadow Knights create their own Angelii corps.

  1. Maybe a member of the middle merchant class who the nobility despise for being a 'jumped up grocer'. It'd make her go against the orthodox wisdom.
  2. Explosives, firearms, pyromancer. Has a thing for knives.
  3. Sounds good.
  4. Var'kazul perhaps?
  5. Sounds good. Caerith Tyari or Shadow Warriors?

1. Oh, I like that. Reminds me of how the old school Tories looked down on Maggie for being a 'grocer's daughter'.

Being the daughter of merchants would have also made her more aware of the outside world and what it has to offer.

2. Var'kazul works. Is that a male or a female name?

Rest sounds good. I guess the Caerith Tyari combat doctrine would mirror the Angelii's a lot. But they're less numerous, so they'd have to account for that.

  1. Exactly. Her parents might even had 'informal' (illegal) trading with offworlders too, so she knew it was more than ghosts and demons out there.
  2. The names for Kar'zun don't have gender. It can be either.
  3. I'm guessing they'd mix in their Sciians among their regular troops or small squads.

Works. Hmm. What rank should she have had in the Eldorai army? Before she deserted and stuff (after being punished for consorting with foreign devils).

'Naesala Faethyra started out as a frontline soldier, but over the decades made the at times awkward transition from warrior to leader. It has not always been an easy one, and it takes her away from fighting more than she would have liked. However, her soldier's mentality has not completely left her. She has an aggressive attitude and expects the Shadow Knights to maintain iron discipline. She is a true believer in the principle that service guarantees citizenship, arguing that only those who have proven their willingness to place the community above themselves deserve authority.

Driven and passionate, she is a good public speaker. Her backgroud as a merchants' daughter exposed her to the outside world, causing her to see beyond the dogma propagated by the Church. Thus Naesala is willing to work with non-Eldorai outsiders, but only on terms she considers beneficial to her people. Unusual among the Eldorai, she's able to understand and converse in several alien languages since she spent a long time in exile.

The relationship between Naesala and Kaida is at times an awkward one. With some justification, Kaida views herself as the superior commander. However, while the former Angelii High Captain is a strong warrior and experienced officer, she lacks charisma. Even her few friends describe her as chilly, domineering, prickly and stern. Her brutal fairness wins her respect, but not affection.

Naesala's true strength is that of a leader, who has the willpower to push her agenda and keep a rather disparate coalition of rebels focused on the larger goal, but is also able to inspire and compromise when needed.

Their divergent strengths and weaknesses complement each other well, but at the same time both elves are extremely willful and like having things their way. Naesala gives Kaida a degree of autonomy, valuing her competence. But she also makes sure to remind the frost elf that she is a recent convert to the Shadow Knights.'

'kay. Idea for what she could have done to reach that rank?

Had some thoughts re timeline:

- She joins the army and rises on merit (and admittedly some bribery). Probably fights Dashdae, Kar'zun rebels etc.

- Is in a battle against foreign raiders that goes poorly for the Eldorai due to inferior tech and old fashioned tactics.

- Using shady contacts with smugglers, she acquires some spaceships (maybe with the tacit support of the military governor, who later turns on her). The foreigners pilot them, transporting the Eldorai to some pirate base on a moon in the Asur system. Pirates gets killed.

- She is put in irons for consorting with foreign devils. Probably got framed. Need a suitable punishment that causes her to desert and leave Kaeshana.

That sequence sounds fair.

Punishment could be that she's stripped of rank and has her pension revoked, maybe gets put under 'Assisted Living' - house arrest until her 'Ilegal contact with unsanctioned lifeforms beyond Kaeshana' is investigated. So she escapes because said investigations rarely end well.
