ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Terraformer: The Salyrini is designed to terraform worlds and similar astronomical objects into habitable environments for most of the galaxy's lifeforms through the use of molecular furnaces and other arcane technologies. Consequently, the Salyrini can rapidly alter an atmosphere's composition, change weather phenomena, or otherwise alter an environment.
WEAKNESSES
  • Lightly Armed: The Salyrini is not really designed to be a front-line warship, and what armament it does have is largely geared towards defending the ship itself from smaller threats or assisting in its terraforming abilities.
DESCRIPTION
With the Bryn'adul practice of altering the atmospheres and environments of conquered worlds, the Silver Jedi Concord found themselves needing a way to change reconquered worlds back to their previous state. Largely financed by Sarkan survivors using the last of their rich horde of nova rubies, Lucerne Labs designed and built the Salyrini-class to begin the rehabilitation of these decimated worlds. Each terraformer's hull is crammed full of specialized equipment such as molecular furnaces and atmospheric filter turbines that can take the very substance of a world and its content and alter it at the molecular level. This allows toxic gases to be converted to breather atmospheres, turn the wreckage of war into new cities, and even reintroduce native fauna and flora to repopulate worlds. These strategic abilities make Salyrini's fairly valuable to their users, and consequently the terraofmrers are well protected even if they are lightly armed. Though designed specifically to reverse the changes wrought by the Bryn'adul, it seems that Salyrinis will be employed in other terraforming efforts, whether it's changing the barren moon of a core world to a tropical paradise or making the atmosphere of a planet in the Unknown Regions simply breathable to the majority of the galaxy's population.

Technical Explanations

Crew & Automation:
The vessel crew of the Salyrini runs slightly over four hundred persons, mostly due to the use of extensive slave circuitry originally derived from the Adz-class Patrol Destroyer. Roughly a quarter of this organic crew are security personnel or onboard troops designed to protect the vessel from boarding attacks. The actual terraforming portions of the Salyrini are heavily automated, drawing upon programming developments taken both from a world devastator and existing civilian weather control technologies. Civilian techs and droids oversee this largely automated process from the ventral command gondola, with the exact number and type of each dependent on the conditions of the terraforming target as well as the extent to which terraforming is needed.

Engine Systems: The Salyrini uses a hextet of Nimble-5 ion engines commonly found on many of Lucerne Lab's warships. These provide the Salyrini with typical flight performance for an industrial ship its size, with a little flexibility for unusual circumstances. Similarly, the ship's hyperdrive is a fairly average class 1 unit.

Shielding Systems: As the Salyrini is likely to be a high priority target due to its strategic abilities to alter an environment, much of the design was focused on building it to be extremely durable. To that end, the Salyrini has a pair of identical Aspis-class Shield Systems which provide it with excellent resilience against most common threats. These shields have been further augmented an Aegis II Anticoncussion Field Generator to provide it with further protection against physical/kinetic threats as well as a Starlight Scutum-class Shield, which not only can provide the Salyrini with another level of protection in combat, but can also provide additional environmental protection. This environmental protection typically is against acidic atmospheres or toxic gases, but it also can allow the Salyrini to be submerged underwater.

Hull armor:
The ship's frame is made out of Ferrocarbon that makes extensive use of triangles to reinforce it against physical stress. Unlike some starhips, the most of this frame is distal to the center of the ship, which allows for a great deal of internal modularity and remodeling flexibility. This frame is then covered in a thick carapace of Argentum-series Matrix Armor, which provides the Salyrini with excellent protection from most threats.

Weapon Systems:
While not designed as a combat vessel, the Salyrini does sport some defensive weaponry, much of which is dual purpose. Harpoon General Purpose Launchers are spread out across the hull. While they can launch missiles and other offensive ordinance, they are more commonly used by the the terraformer to launch satellites, probes, and other elements of weather control technology. Similarly, the Salyrini does have a number of Aura-class Tractor/Pressor Beam emplacements to help feed material into the molecular furnace for conversion and to bat away or move obstacles, but they too can be employed offensively as weapons. Lastly, a series of point defense laser cannons and missile batteries are equidistantly spaced across the hull to protect the ship against warheads, starfighters, space debris, and other smaller threats.

Carrying Capacity: The Salyrini has fairly average hangar sizes for its size. While not designed to enter direct combat, the Salyrini does have a single ventral hangar is dedicated to solely carrying starfighters. These starfighters are typically interceptors and superiority starfighters, which can be quickly deployed to intercept and destroy threats before they reach the terraformer. A number of smaller hangars are spread throughout the rest of the ship, but all are dedicated to carrying support craft, typically shuttles and light freighters to provide simple logistical support to the terraformer or terraforming projects on the ground, but depending on the terraforming project, the Salyrini may host more specialized craft such as gas skimmers or construction starships.

Tempest carries an average amount of starfighters for its size, housed in small hangars that only support a single squadron at a time. Each hangar includes several pressor catapults, a small tractor beam to help recover damaged craft, and a pair of blast doors constructed of thick Argentum Matrix Armor. Blast doors are shut when the hangars are not actively launching or recovering friendly starships. Typically an entire wing is composed of permanently stationed general purpose space superiority starfighters such as the X-wing or the Typhoon Modular Starfighter. The remaining two squadrons are typically mission specific assets or local units rotating out into the void for deployment. Internally, the Tempest carries only a single regiment and its equipment, roughly a third of the troops carried by the classic Imperial Star Destroyer.. These troops typically are only present for shipboard security, though they can be used for small-scale ground missions.

Terraformer: The Salyrini's primary function is to terraform planets, moons, asteroids, and other similar objects to make them habitable for different types of organic life. This is a fairly intensive process, and consequently the vast majority of the Salyrini's internal space is dedicated towards housing the equipment needed to make this a success. Key among these is a massive, bow-mounted molecular furnace fed by tractor beams that can convert any number of materials into almost any sort of compound that might be needed to help sustain life on a planet, whether its breatheable atmosphers and water to metal alloys needed to make equipment. One of the primary obstacles to life on most worlds is a lack of atmosphere or an atmosphere that is hostile to most forms of organic life, especially on worlds previously occupied by the Bryn'adul. To that end, the Salyrini has an extensive array of Atmospheric Filtration Turbines, Air Scrubbers, and Atmosphere Generators that can quickly remove toxic gases and transform and/or replace them with more benign gases. Water is a similarly another important material needed to support life. To that end, the Salyrini can use hydro-reclamation processors to separate compounds within the air to produce clean water, or use the molecular furnace to change other substances into water. The Aura-class Tractor/Pressor beam projectors not only are used to help feed the Salyrini itself, but also to change the landscape itself, using the forces of gravity to better shape landmasses to make them more habitable. Examples of such usage include using shearing forces to flatten rocky landscapes into plains onto which cities and other structures can be built, dig tunnels through pressor beams, or use tractor beams to smooth out vicious surfaces like desert sands. The Salyrini can also use its general purpose launchers to deploy a variety of adjunct devices such as weather satellites, orbital mirrors, and other weather control technologies. Once the most basic elements of the area have been terraformed using these technologies, secondary manufacturing systems within the Salyrini including automated factories and cloning cylinder arrays come into play. The onboard factories on the Salyrini can be tooled to produce almost anything, but typically they produce prefabricated structures for colonists such as habitation domes, weather control stations, and massive atmospheric processors. Cloning cylinders are often used to create life forms to repopulate planets with flora and fauna, especially on those worlds previously controlled by the Bryn'adul.
