Lien Beifong
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Royal Exploration Corps is the generational successor to the Royal Society of the earlier Atrisian Commonwealth. Created through the collaborative efforts of Captain Lien Beifong and Shoma, Prince of Xiaolang, it is a small collection of ships and scientific personnel whose prime directive is focused on exploration and peaceful scientific research programs -- rather than the uniformed defense of the Atrisian star system. The four vessels rarely work collectively. Instead, one or more ships are assigned to detached operations to a sector or region consistent with the aims of whatever research program that ships may be conducting or participating in at that time. Collaboration across the task force is encouraged, as is seeking out diplomatic exchanges of scientific information (provided, of course, that its information of a peaceful nature and not a risk to Atrisian security).
Due to practical limitations and the inherent risk associated with space travel, the smaller Equinox-class vessels were typically assigned exploration programs inside or nearer to Atrisian home space. Those research programs requiring extensive travel outside of the Core Region were typically assigned to the larger ships. One such example was the ACS Shenzhou, which embarked on a survey of the Utegetu Nebula in 860 ABY.

It functions as a scientific and academic repository, supplying research opportunities and also practical experience in various scientific disciplines through deep space exploration programs.
- Headquarters: Atrisia
- Ports of Call: Mobile. The Royal Exploration Corps operates across the full range of the galaxy, from the Core Worlds to Wild Space, provided that the political climate in the particular region is amenable to their presence.
- Goals: Peaceful scientific exploration, the development of cultural and scientific exchange programs, and furthering mutual understanding of the greater galactic community.
- Reputation: Mixed. Skepticism toward government scientists and the goals of government-sponsored research programs unavoidably conflates weapons R&D with peaceful exploration programs.
- Fleet Size: Small
- Lead Ship: ACS Shenzhou | Sentinel-class Heavy Explorer
- Composition:
- ACS Xiaolang | Consular-class Light Explorer
- ACS Sarnoi | Equinox-class Science Vessel
- ACS Kitel Phard | Equinox-class Science Vessel
