Rightful Property

This wasn’t his first visit to Dagobah, not by far. Having a good idea what to expect from its native inhabitants, he was prepared in that aspect. Unfortunately, not even the Sith lord knew the exact nature of the trials awaiting him and his allies. Their strength in numbers did not equal success, although it signed the First Order took securing Darth Sidious’ heritage very seriously. Where they saw proving their right to all artifacts dating back to the First Galactic Empire, the Sith lord spied an opportunity to insult a rival. Knowing her to wield Palpatine’s fabled weapon, a compromise’s been reached and Darth Veles accompanied the Ren on their mission to Dagobah, utilizing one of the discreet stealth vessels kindly provided by the First Order to penetrate the enemy borders and reach their destination unnoticed.

Not many settlements and villages dotted the surface, each a rarity rather than anything else. Dagobah did not need sentient beings to be treacherous – in fact, visitors often ended up being a welcome source of meat unless they properly prepared themselves for the native fauna and flora. That, and Darth Veles’ old rival was infamous for birthing Sithspawn and conducting heretical rituals for restless spirits to eternally haunt the eerie mists rolling over the burping swamps. None knew the exact resting place of Palpatine’s blade, but several villages have been wiped out in this area, their inhabitants butchered no matter their age or gender – a telltale sign of Venefica’s demented work.

There, deeper in the marsh tainted with the dark side, their prize awaited rescue.

The land was mushy, but stable enough to permit their stealth ship’s landing, placing the intimidating group as close to their targeted area as possible. The first to march from the metal beast’ belly, Darth Veles, halted once his webbed feet touched the ground. His bionic eye examined the surroundings, a careful observation before venturing further because a possibility. Showing slow, perfectly calculated motions wrapped in Imperial-esque elegance and ruthlessness, the Mon Calamari turned around to pay his companions a brief glance, checking on them. The amphibious Sith lord only hoped his dark side compatriots have readied themselves – and that the most droid-like members would face little trouble when treading an environment so hostile to their bodies.

It ultimately mattered little though. As long as Darth Sidious' lightsaber found its rightful owners, no sacrifice was too great.

At first glance the planet deceitfully pretended to be a calm destination, but those sensitive to the Force saw through the treacherous lie; the desolate land was particularly strong in the Force and brimming with life. Gnarltrees grew as far as eyes could see, silently towering high above the repugnantly smelling bogs while old branches covered in moss threatened to hide a Dagobah python waiting for its prey to pass below. One would be foolish to dismiss the hidden threats lurking within the marsh itself where the stagnant waters were deep enough though. The air was dense with humidity and a white, thick fog rolled over the green, opaque surface of the swamps, carrying a lingering, foul stench of sulphur originating from the gooey muck that severely impacted mobility.

A splash occasionally broke the monotone buzzing of insects and letting the unfortunate souls treading the land know they were never truly alone, always watched and hunted.

Kaalia had heard of the planet Dagobah before. A planet not to be underestimated, she was told, and she wasn't going to. The young woman's hair was tied up so it wouldn't get in the way or stuck on anything, her choice of attire made of strong materials that covered up her body almost entirely and would hold up on a planet like this, gloves to protect her hands, and long black boots to top it off. She couldn't bear the thought of being a burden on this mission, and made absolutely sure she was well-prepared for the planet's hostilities, whatever they may encounter. As she made sure her two lightsabers were properly holstered, her choice of weapons for this mission, she followed [member='Darth Veles'] off of the stealth ship they arrived in.

On the one hand, she was surprised by the beauty she saw. The wild was everywhere you looked, the flora and fauna thriving in every sense of the word. She had never seen anything like this before, and eagerness started to well up inside her. On the other hand though, there was the power of the Force which took her aback. Kaalia's thoughts were getting louder and louder, as her usually dormant but definitely present inner struggle between Light and Dark forced its way into former Jedi's mind. Although with difficulty, she managed to stay calm and collected on the outside, and was slowly but surely pushing away the thoughts. The words "Keep it together." repeated in her mind as the 19-year old took her first steps on not-so-solid soil.

Proving her worth to the Ren was the primary reason for Kaalia to join this mission, but definitely not the only one. The chance to wield a saber crafted by one of the most influencial sentients in history, it was an opportunity that very few get. The red-haired woman would definitely not be the only one with such a wish, and she was aware of the fact someone as new to the Ren as her would not have a very large chance of receiving an artifact of such importance, but she would make her case when the time came to do so anyway. Her mind wanted it, but her heart needed it. Validation. Respect. Something Kaalia has been looking for. Something she hasn't felt in a very long time.

Kyrel heard of Dagobah before. He had heard from his studies in both the light side, and the dark side, that this was the birthplace of the Empire's defeat. Grand Master Yoda survived the Jedi Purge, and trained Vader's offspring as a Jedi. The results of which killed the Emperor and Vader, and the Empire's collapse. Now he had heard of Darth Sidious's lightsaber being on the planet. His thoughts raced on possesing such a Saber that belonged to the Master of the person he idolized ,Not to mention killing so many Jedi with it as well.

He had come with a platoon of stormtroopers placed under his command, and took his Theta-class shuttle, along with his droid [member="HK-68"] During the ride he felt a sense of excitement swell within him. He wanted that saber for himself and would either fight Veles or the other Ren for it. Once the saber belonged to the most powerful Sith Lord the galaxy has ever know. Now it would be within his grasp, and wielded by him. He thought to himself gleefully. 'Soon,It shall be mine.' He had went into a meditation trance all through the trip to hyperspace.

It came to an abrupt end when the proximity alarm blared loudly. It snapped him out of his meditation and proceeded to bring the ship out of hyperspace. There was something that slightly worried him though throughout the trip to hyperspace. On Dagobah there is a lot of marshes covering the area. It would prove to be an obstacle to the young Disciple. Nonetheless he shook the dread off. Despite his condition he needed to learn how to get past it. If he didn't it would just add to the limitations that were already holding him back. That he would not have in anyway, shape,or form.

The shuttle descended rapidly down onto the surface. Grey clouds covering the skies giving a perpetual gloomy feeling to the humid atmosphere. He found a dry area after sometime of searching, and he preformed the landing cycle. The ship descended slowly it's bat like wings folding. The landing ramp than lowered, and the troopers rushed quickly outside of the ship. They pointed their blasters in all directions, before the squad commander approached Kyrel who now was walking down the ramp carefully.

"It seems to be cleared sir." He said attentively.

Kyrel looked at him for a moment, and than replied coldly. "Fan out,and find a better path through these swamps. I do not want to have to cross through marshes during the duration of our stay commander."

The commander nodded, and than said to his squad mates. "Alright men. You heard him I want you to scout the area, and find a better route through this swamp."

The troopers nodded, raising their blaster rifles going in all directions to see if they can find different paths through the swamp. Kyrel just stood there reaching out with the force. He could sense the other Ren including Veles had arrived, and so he felt a sense of anxiety within him. He muttered to himself. "I will claim that saber." He than walked along a dry path, the troops spreading out and following closely behind him.

HK-68

Normal Protocol Droid
HK-68 mechanically stepped out, experimenting with the environment. The mud was soft, but not soft enough to interfere with 68's functions. Knowing that he would have to, at some point, fight with lightsaber wielders, 68 brought his fighting programming up to the forefront of his mind. After all, 68's prime duty was killing.

"Statement: Ground stable. Warning: Hostile meatbags detected. Warning: Organics detected in environment."

"Recommended Action: Hostile meatbags, turn back now. Statement: You are not a match for me. Conclusion: You should turn back. Lest I... accidentally hurt you."

68 knew that his duty on this mission would be to help his Master to reclaim a weapon. Unfortunately, he didn't know if he would be able to kill anything on this mission. After all, the other meatbags were on the same side as his Master. But not 68's side. 68 was only on one side: His Master's. Knowing that this mission was important to his Master, 68 scanned the area, searching for other meatbags. Unfortunately, all 68 found were dead meatbags. 'Interesting' thought 68. He would have to notify his Master once they were alone.

He didn't like lying to the Irajah, but it was exciting nonetheless.

He'd stayed up past his bedtime, eagerly harassing the ship's computer for more and more details about this world known as Dagobah. Travel to other planets was still new and different to his mind, awakening the imagination of the Pantoran youngling and sparking curiosity that stirred restlessness.

Like his earlier mission to Rattatak, he was accompanied by members of the Knights of Ren. Another secret he was supposed to keep from the Irajah. Unlike the Rattatak mission, however, this one was completely covert. As far as [member="Irajah Ven"] was aware, the boy was staying over at a camp on Zenith Base with the other cadets from his class at the Prosperia Junior Academy. The librarian, Zsasz, who had guided the boy through these assignments, and with whom the Pantoran had begun to trade secrets, had even concocted official parental permission slips for the Irajah to sign.

He liked talking to Mister Zsasz. It seemed odd that the man was a librarian. He didn't seem at all the type. Regardless, the boy found him easy to talk to -- even about the things that he'd kept secret from the Irajah.

The Equinox.

Things he'd done for his former master...

But, he was never worried about Mister Zsasz being mad or hating him for those things. If anything, Mister Zsasz seemed like he was proud of him. Told him that there were others like him. And, at some point, he might even get to go to school with them all the time.

He'd been told that he'd need to recover some things from the Equinox for this trip. That Dagobah wasn't going to be like Rattatak. It was going to be rough, and wild, and dangerous.

Like the Undercity.

It had been difficult, figuring when he could sneak away from [member="Irajah Ven"]'s notice to get a transmission out to R3, and then get to a star port landing pad and back before anyone noticed he was gone. But doctor's worked haphazard schedules, and a late day at the MedCenter had allowed the boy to recover a set of power gauntlets and a small blaster pistol.

Yawning, the boy was still securing the last gauntlet over the sleeve of the simple, black outfit that he wore as he brought the rear of the group that was disembarking with the Mon Calamari at the lead. As he finished locking the device over his forearm, the child wiped, sleepily, at his eyes as he started down the loading ramp.

Nostalgia caused him to do a double take.

It didn't look anything like Coruscant, but the smell definitely reminded him of the sewers back home.

As he walked along behind the group, the purple-headed child wondered aloud, "Who was this Papatine guy, anyway?"

Yes, Papatine. He'd stayed up reading about bog wings, leaf tails, and dragonsnakes... at some point he probably should have read up about what it was they were here looking for. But none of that seemed half as interesting as dragonsnakes.

The swamp planet was rife with tales. It reeked of life and hazards, exuding something fierce, ancient and primal. On the ride there, BE-183's thoughts had wandered back to that initiatory period of basic training. They went through hell then, so that whatever came their way in the field was manageable. Ignoring the disturbingly inexplicable vibe this place gave her, the trooper marched on with a singular determination in mind. This was just one more set of adverse conditions to conquer.

When the destination was a possibly hostile, flora-ridden planet the very first thing she'd want in her unit were flametroopers. The roasters were notably an effective deterrent for some predatory fauna as well. They may not even prove necessary, but would be a welcome utility. While Bee didn't hold a command position, after reporting in as a medical technician prior to their travel, she cautiously submitted her opinion that the mission required incendiary specialists, assuming there were none present at that stage.

What worried her more than plants and critters were the Ren. In the field, knights of Ren had the last word. Their awesome force powers and reflexes were a blessing to any company. But like the Sith, or indeed followers of the dark side as a whole, they could be prone to feuds and bitter rivalries, common enemies notwithstanding. It was simply the way of things. She understood competition, and this saber was valuable. It wasn't her place to be concerned with such things, in any case. She didn't call the shots, she just... shot them.

The marshes looked safer from down the sight of a blaster. She kept her quadnocs handy at zero magnification, any enhanced imaging might be useful here but she wouldn't sacrifice situational awareness. As Kyrel Ren ordered, Bee moved in formation to scout the marshes. It was trees and mist as far as the eye could see, which wasn't very far at all. "The surface underbrush is densest where the ground is most solid, sir. Quicker underfoot," she observed.

What a miserable, vile little planet Dagobah was. Samka's face was one of resigned disgust. This was not an experience she was going to enjoy and she was not going to pretend otherwise. From orbit, it had been swamp across the entire surface. A planet quite fascinating for biologists, she was sure. Life was everywhere. Both flora and fauna were everywhere and all of it seemingly unique in the galaxy. Samka was not a biologist. Instead she despised the grotesque little insects crawling on every rotten, gnarled tree. She despised the filthy bog water barely visible in the thick mist and fog and she despised every repulsive reptile and re-pungent amphibian hiding in it. But most of all, she thought as her boots left the landing ramp and squelched into the planet's mossy surface, she despised the mud. The thick, damp mud.

"Let's get this over with," she muttered to no one in particular and marched forwards to catch up with [member="Darth Veles"], splashing through a small puddle to do so.

"Avreet," she called out for the Mon Cal using his first name, the one he'd insisted she'd call him by as a token of their friendship. "It was most generous of you to share this information with the Ren, a pity about the planet but still, if this trip is fruitful, I'll see to it myself that you are rewarded."

Now side by side with the Sith Lord, Sam threw a quick glance towards the other members of their party then pulled herself up on the tips of her toes to coo in Veles's ear, "If this is a trap, however, I'll eviscerate you myself." Pulling herself away slightly, she offered the Sith her sweetest smile. Such was the way they played.

"Also," she glanced around once more to seek out the form of [member="Boo Chiyo"], "Do you think it wise we took a child along? And don't make the remark I can already see forming in your head, please." Samka Derith herself wasn't exactly a legal adult in the eyes of many governments and authorities. Her face and body made her look even younger, a blessing and a curse. As the girl approached her seventeenth birthday, she was beginning to wonder just when puberty would finish the damn job instead of the awkward halfway point she was stuck in.

Ashen Ren had not been excited about the journey to Dagobah. It was a world that she had been to once before and only because her ship had crash landed upon the marshy surface. Though she remembered that day quite well, memories of this time were kept locked away in the corners of her mind. Only during moments of solitude were they allowed to surface, but even then, she guarded them well. Isla took her gaze away from the viewport, for the moment ignoring the sight of the planet below. She let her eyes close slowly, her hands gathered in her lap, where they sat calmly folded.

Once more, she had chosen to join [member="Darth Veles"] on an expedition. It was far from the first time she had traveled with the Mon Cal, and she had a feeling that it would not be the last. Thus far, the Sith Lord had proven himself to be useful ally. During their many outings, Isla had developed a certain level of trust and respect for the man. Perhaps she would even call him a friend now. But that did not mean that she did not watch his movements carefully. He was an imperial at heart, but he was still a Sith…

After the ship had set down, she followed the others down the ramp and into the humid air. Carefully, her gaze took in their surroundings. Dagobah looked no different than it had the last time she had been. The landscape formed by pools of murky water, thick blankets of moss, and a sticky bed of mud. Isla said nothing as her boots immediately began to dip into the soggy ground, a little bit of dirt and grime never hurt. There were some familiar faces here today, Isla noted the presences that she knew, and the few that were unknown.

A sly smile formed on her lips as [member="Samka Derith"] spoke up. The lavender-haired Knight’s interactions with Avreet were amusing, at least to Isla. She even stifled a chuckle as the young woman voiced her concerns about bringing along the young [member="Boo Chiyo"]. They were all well aware of the risks; it was dangerous to come to Dagobah with intentions of retrieving the saber of Darth Sidious. But Isla hoped that it would be worth it. After all, it would be quite an accomplishment to return the saber to First Order space.

The knights of Ren were an interesting, diverse group. One more glance over these assassins only confirmed that. While his memory found the task of recalling some of the faces impossible, Darth Veles was positive about knowing the majority of them by now, [member="Samka Derith"] and [member="Isla Ashen"] in particular. Despite the pleasantries so often exchanged between himself and the two, the Sith lord knew them to be vastly more dangerous than most of their colleagues. Doubting either of them would end up claiming Darth Sidious’ lightsaber meant betting on the wrong horse in this race. After blessing Isla with the sweetest of smiles, clearly calling her his sweet, sweet friend without saying a word, the Dark lord paid attention to Samka’s words. His warm hued orbs continued to stare across the marsh, almost as if he possessed the ability to see through the thick white cover. Truly; trapping the Ren and wiping out half of their organisation would pose no challenge on a planet like this. Dagobah did not need sentient hands to test its visitors though.

“I see no child,” replied the Sith lord firmly, concerned eyes never leaving the clouded horizon, “Only the Supreme Leader’s weapon.”

Tools and assets to be used. Perhaps more organic than regular lightsabers and possessing the ability to think, but weapons nonetheless – and they would be treated like ones. Maybe the youngest member had yet to become a sharp scalpel, but that’s what missions such as this were for. At least according to the Sith lord – his ideas of training radically differed from those of the Ren, also meaning he had no intention to babysit the least skilled members of this expedition. They were either strong enough to survive or not.

“We need to hurry and make progress before nightfall.” Darth Veles informed his followers and set off.

The ground soon lost its ability to support consistent travel, gaining in softness before fully turning into a lukewarm muck hell-bent on slowing them down, threatening to eat their bodies whole should they longer for too long, be it their fault or not. Hesitation came with a cruel price and Dagobah punished indecision particularly harshly. Sinking too deep into the sludge meant another problem – affecting their energy-emitting weapons lest the lightsaber hilts possessed the ability to work submerged. Each and every one of them turned into vulnerable prey as Dagobah welcomed the new contestants, luring them in on the promise of treasure until the safe confines of their ship became a memory left several bogs back.

“Keep close to each other. Don’t get lost in the fog.” The Mon Cal guide advised without ever pausing in his steady pace.

Moving with surprising ease despite wearing no boots, the Sith lord defied Dagobah's nature without experiencing troublesome hindrance, indicating his racial advantages and experience with such environments alike. Slippery roots lurking below the swamp's opaque waters tried their best to tangle around his feet and pull him down into the bottomless black depths, only to experience failure. Wet sloshes and slurps accompanied the amphibious Sith’s swift movement, revealing his intention to cut as much distance as possible before they had to stop and camp for the night. The ancient gnarltrees dotting the miserable land often formed suitable cave-like cover at their base, making them excellent candidates for sheltering the expedition when the night settled in.

While Dagobah did not visually differ much between day and night, obscured by high trees and covered in perpetual darkness, most predators would leave their lairs once the time was right. Considering the beasts were particularly aggressive in these parts, possibly due to the dark side taint residing in this eternally cursed place, getting lost in the marshlands at night spelled a death sentence. Everyone would become aware of this as their progress carried them closer to the source of this unnatural taint – the Force turned into a living being whose beating heart could almost be heard if one delved deep into its currents and connected with Dagobah’s powerful presence. An interesting experience no doubt.

Kaalia kept silent. She wasn't here to have a nice get-together with her fellow Ren, she wasn't here for a meet and greet. If she wanted to do that, there were much, much better times to do so. As the others exchanged pleasantries, the 'new girl' merely listened as the others were talking about the child that also came along. It was something that definitely came as a surprise, someone of that age accompanying the Ren. She didn't speak out about it during the trip however, electing not to question it.

The group of people that came along looked interesting; quickly looking around Kaalia noticed a young woman with a hair color not unlike hers, with an energetic and determined feel about her, and another woman, looking quite a bit younger, Kaalia's interest about her piqued by her highly unusual purple hair color and red eyes, were some of the faces she took in. The group started moving, and the humming of a melody could be heard from Kaalia's direction.

Traversing Dagobah was no easy task. The further the group got into the swamp, the ground got mushier rapidly. With every step more and more energy was spent as the ground tried to suck her in deeper. And getting sucked in too deep meant certain death. That wasn't the only threat however, as the flora around were to be wary of at all times. Kaalia lost count of the times roots tried to drag her down to her demise, as it got harder to get free every time. Kaalia had trouble keeping up with the Mon Calamari that lead the way, but elected to not speak out. She'd just have step it up.

Kaalia's mind in the meantime was working in overdrive. Every time the former Jedi managed to push away the tugging of both the Light and Dark side, the conflict seemed to flare back to life even more prominently due to the power of the Force on the planet. "It is not too late to turn back to the Light. Embrace who you are now. Find inner peace. Let loose your emotions. The Force is a guiding light. The Force provides great power. Follow the Light. Follow the Dark." She clearly looked distressed now, and decided to don a hood hoping that nobody would notice the struggle she was in.

The effect of the Dark side on the planet became more and more noticable as they travelled further in. Kaalia could feel it in every fiber of her body. It twisted and corrupted the nature around, but also invaded her mind attempting to do the same. Slowly dark thoughts entered her conscious, tempting and seducing her to the Dark side. The inner struggle between Light and Dark was something she could fight off, with great effort, but against this she stood no chance. The young woman slowly started descending into darker and darker places in her mind, by no means voluntarily, and the Light was fighting a losing battle if this kept on for too long.

The boy's question just sailed off into the wind, garnering no response.

His shoulders slumped slightly as he pouted for the lack of attention, then turned his attention away from the adults walking in front of him. Tucking his arms behind his head, the toe of his boot idly kicked a stone across standing pools of brackish water that covered the mud flats through which the party was trudging.

In spite of the child's casual demeanor, he was very much aware of the situation here and now. The slight disturbance across the surface of the water that gave rise to a belief that something was lurking close. Or the appearance of roots that shifted, as though they'd moved in the time it took to blink.

It was cold here. It felt like it had in his master's household. It was the Force, but it was ever so slightly different. Crawling in the skin, as though maggot larva were creeping up the gooseflesh.

Whatever they were looking for, clearly there were things on this world that were now looking for them...
