STANDARD FEATURES

  • The station features a hyperdrive and the whole standard array of shields, communications and systems that are commonly associated with military stations.
ADVANCED SYSTEMS
  • Archangel Processing Machine. Every prisoner is scanned and the data is stored in a database for use later. The procedure is disguised as a medical checkup. HRDs are not actually created on the stations. The data is just saved and the HRD is created elsewhere. Prisoners who have been sentenced to death are processed and terminated, but the others are simply scanned.
  • Tractor Beams
  • Hyperwave Inertial Momentum Sustainer
  • Orbital Longe Range Scanners
  • Cap Drains
  • Molecular Furnace for recycling.
  • Solid Fuel Converter
  • Ghostwave Transmitter.
  • Extensive detention areas and prisoner containment equipment, including standard, solitary and sensory deprivation cells. Energy Cages are available, as are Universal Energy Cages and Containment Fields for special cases. It is pertinent to note that the prison does not only have energy fields protecting the cells - there's also a solid metal door/gate too.
  • Military Firewalls.
  • Unity Processing Matrix. Essentially acts as a powerful droid brain controlling the station.
  • Carbonite Storage.
  • Prison workshops. The proceedings here are actually above board. Sweat shops are inefficient and illogical, so Archangel does not use them. A disciplined, productive work force is far superior to a coerced one.
  • Brainwashing Rehabilitation Facilities. Inmates undergo behavioural modification treatment. Most are released to the party holding the contract upon completition of sentence. Those in prison for life are claimed by Archangel for future use.
  • Escape pods have no life support. Shuttles require an absurdly long code. If someone tries to fly one without putting it in (or uses the wrong one), the remote detonators blow them up.
STRENGTHS
  • Heavily armoured and shielded, the station can weather a heavy bombardment. It is also protected against ionic and electromagnetic attacks as well as cyberwarfare. This is pertinent since each station is droid-crewed. It can also accommodate a large number of attack craft and transports/support craft.
  • Each station is designed to hold and re-educate a large number of prisoners. A stay here is a transformative experience. Inmates will recognise their errors.
WEAKNESSES
  • The station is slow and cumbersome. It has the speed and manoeuvrability of a brick.
  • The station is armed, but its armaments are focused around small craft defence, not slug fests with capital ships. If it faces those it can sustain a lot of damage, but only has a limited ability to actually hurt them in return.
  • To prevent prisoners from escaping, the escape pods have no life support.
DESCRIPTION

When an interstellar government, no matter whether it is a totalitarian Empire, a democratic Republic, a decentralised Coalition, an oligarchic Plutocracy, a Jedi Theocracy or any variation thereof, tries to annex an independent planet, it often encounters one of two types of opposition: a religious cult, whose members are often regarded as insane fanatics, or a criminal organisation, such as pirates, a Hutt cartel or similar. At the same time it has been observed that the economy is booming to a degree that even small startups are able to instantly acquire the funding to build massive warships and space stations. One might note that most businesses are shipwrights or armaments manufacturers, who must be experiencing a boom due to the war economy. But clearly the boom is not for everyone.

Unrestrained Neoliberalism has not caused a trickle-down effect. Given how many people keep ending up as goons in criminal organisations, battling the technologically far superior armies of major governments, trillions must have fallen through the cracks. Moreover, a series of galactic wars and low-intensity conflicts has produced a large population that has become accustomed to taking what it wants as gunpoint and has indeed not learned anything else.

The fall of galactic powers regularly leaves Remnants, warlords and hordes of jobless soldiers behind. Some manage to integrate themselves into another galactic power, but many end up living a life of crime. Furthermore, perennial galactic conflict, repeated cases of genocide and planetary destruction has displaced an enormous number of sentient beings. Sadly, many run into walls instead of open borders, and are forced to enter planets illegally. Forced to live outside the law and deprived of a safety net, they are at risk of drifting into criminality.

State prisons clearly cannot keep up with the demand. But the private prison system has its own issues. Various studies show that privatised prisons make a point to make prison as rough as possible because they have done the research and know what kind of environment will most likely cause a person to be a repeat offender and try to create that environment. In other prisons security regulations are so lax and corruption so rampant that crime lords can still give orders to subordinates, order hits on their enemies, smuggle technology, drugs, guns and so on.

But Archangel is different. The company believes in progress and in its duty to the galactic community. By embracing technology and the newest innovations in cybernetics, criminology and psychology, it can resocialise offenders. No longer will a prison stay be a soul-crushing experience. No longer will inmates fall back into bad habits. Archangel focuses on resocialisation rather than retributive justice. No one reoffends after a stay in an Archangel jail. Their methods are humane and transformative. You will leave there, literally, a different person. Indeed, you may find employment with Archangel. The humanity of its methods have been verified by independent observers.

To this end Archangel has constructed a series of stations to accommodate the Galaxy's delinquents. These maximum security stations contain self-contained cell blocks, are self-sufficient and completely automated. The station has a traditional ring form. The inner ring holds the hangars, the outer the prisoners. Each station has a hyperdrive and is heavily armoured, as Archangel takes the safety of its charges seriously. As their rehabilation progresses, inmates are given the opportunity to learn new skills. To this end state-of-the-art learning modules are utilised.

It also makes use of modern technology to suppress aggression. Behaviour modification therapy is also used in order to help the prisoners overcome anti-social tendencies. Moreover, the inmates can work while in prison. This is done in prison workshops or hydroponics. An example would be making furniture or clothes. They are paid for their work. A percentage of their wage goes into a compulsory savings scheme for use on release, and another part goes to a victims' charity. The rest can be spent on food, drink and toiletries. Of course, security concerns are not ignored. For instance, an axe murderer would not be employed in an engineering workshop. The facilities are able to hold Force-Sensitive prisoners and special cells with ysalamiri nutrient tanks are available if needed. However, in the vast majority of cases the prisoners are Non-Force-Using criminals. The stations are focused on rehabilitating the masses, not space mages, as the latter often require more specialised treatment.

The crew is composed of droids. Droids, in contrast to organics, never get tired and can work day and night. Moreover, they do not get bored by mundane tasks, cannot be bribed or act irrationally. Thus mechanical wardens are incorruptible. Specialised medical droids see to the needs of the prisoners, ensuring that their healthcare needs are met and facilitating their rehabilitation. They have the programming to serve as prison psychiatrists. Aside from various security droids, each station has a contingent of HRDs. Guards can closely monitor an inmate's movements and communications. Archangel accepts contracts from interstellar and planetary governments. For a fee their prisoners will be taken in, and re-educated. A portion of Archangel's earnings are donated to various police forces and charities. Archangel supports safe streets and rational crime prevention.

Marketing aside, everything the official brochure says is true. From a certain point of view. Space in the prisons can be hired out to governments or corporations. They provide the prisoners, and Archangel takes care of the rest. This relieves governments of the burden and frees up prison space. Archangel is putting the detritus of the Galaxy to good use. It is willing to make deals with any lawful government or corporation. Archangel calls the station the Retention Class. Enyo's clone posse finds that boring, so they call it Tartarus Class. To prevent prisoners from escaping, the escape pods have no life support. There are also remote detonators on the shuttles. If you do not put in the correct (absurdly long code because droids) the shuttle self-destructs.
