The Chiss remained silent as she simply observed how Deson instructed Zanessa. Her expression remained neutral, giving away nothing of what she was thinking. Hawthorne only shifted her gaze when
Torn Eskol
arrived and moved.
She couldn’t help but feel some degree of amusement at the man’s ‘name’, the
Hammer. It was an ironic alias given assassins tended value subtle and not, well being a blunt weapon.
But people like Agent Eskol were needed when at war.
Her eyes focused back on Deson as she saw him approach, eyes bearing the bitter emotion he was feeling inside. Hawthorne didn’t react, didn’t even physically budge as he walked over to her. Just orange eyes staring right at him.
She only spoke once the man had said his piece. “
And yet, you vocalised your intent to disobey an order, to jump into another operation, despite only just returning from one that failed.”
“
Let me guess, you were thinking about the number of enemies the Alliance is presently facing, and felt like you couldn’t sit around because of that fact? Even had the stray thought of potentially giving the ol’ middle finger, and going rogue. Sounds about right?” She continued, an eyebrow raised as she crossed her arms.
“
Your frustration is understandable, especially after so many months of undercover work. But you’re not a machine, Agent Sanei. You’re a cog in a larger machine, yes. But one that has to stop every now and then. You’re one person, others will pick up the slack while you recover. And before you refute needing a break, you do. It might not be the next Op, or the one after that. But if you don’t give yourself the needed time to disconnect, you will end up failing much harder than now.”
Over the course of its history, the SIA had lost one too many fantastic agents to that kind of poisonous mindset.
She caught sight of Eskol as he made his way to leave, catching his glance as he moved. Nothing was said, and Hawthorne’s focus was back on Deson.
Though it wasn’t lost on her, the extra level of irony having had the two of them in the same room.
