After linking up with the scrapper's caravan and making a decent amount of credit to get by for the month, Rayne's intention had been to park herself below the cover of some of the larger ruins on Jakku and simply relax. Unfortunately it seemed that the universe had other plans, as she came across the wreckage of a speeder, pretty fresh at that. A woman was within, still alive albeit very unconscious. She had suffered an injury to her forehead and several lacerations on her forearms, but appeared to be in stable condition otherwise.

So, with her height leverage and some elbow grease, Rayne hoisted the stranger onto her back and carried them up the ladder into their walker, where she'd bandage them up and lay them down in her own bed. Of course, she had to move her ridiculous amount of plushies out of the way, amounts that you would typically expect of a child's playroom rather than the home of a scrapper. One of her many addictions that had run rampant with financial independence.

She hadn't bothered to get into her jumpsuit today, as she wasn't going into any downed star destroyers today. The young woman was in what was essentially her pajamas, standing at the kitchen counter she had installed into the van-cabin of her walker preparing some hot chocolate. The desert night was rather frigid after all.

As Rayne turned off the stove and put the lid over the pot, she heard movement. The woman she had found was beginning to stir, which was good. The young scrapper was afraid that the stranger had slipped into an a coma or something like that. She made her way back to the side of the bed as the woman came to her senses, giving them a warm smile and a simple half-wave.

Valery's eyes slowly opened but her vision was blurry, and her head was hurting even worse than the time she had crashed and been captured by Danton. Her arms felt like they held no strength anymore either, and even her chest had taken a hit, but she can't remember what from. The only thing she could tell, is that she had been wrapped up in bandages and was lying down on her back in a place she couldn't remember either.

Or maybe she had never been here before?

"Where... am I?" Valery asked after a loud groan escaped her. "And why does my whole body feel like I hit a wall at mach speed?" she asked, not realizing that's just about what actually happened to her.

Then, there was a sudden panic.

Valery sat up straight in an instant despite the pain in her head and chest, and frantically felt around her own fingers. When they touched her wedding ring and she realized it was still there, she let out a sigh of relief and just fell onto her back again with another groan of pain.

Nobody had taken it from her this time.

"Wait... who are you?" She finally looked at the woman sitting at the side of her bed, but Valery clearly had no idea who it was, or why she was there. Was... she her doctor?

"And why does my whole body feel like I hit a wall at mach speed?"

"Probably because you did."

Rayne answered this through a vocoder attached to the ceiling of the vessel, one she often used to communicate with traders. It was programmed to match the female personality core of a protocol droid, so it had that cadence with an inflection of more organic speech.

When Valery asked who she was, the tall woman retained her smile, giving a friendly tilt of her head.

"I'm Rayne," the vocoder introduced. "You're in my house. Well, it's not really a house, but it sorta serves the same purpose."

She'd step away for a moment, which would give the injured woman a good idea of her unusually tall height before she returned with a mug. It had the print of a monkey plush on it, hot chocolate fresh from the stove steaming on the inside. Rayne would present the mug to Valery wordlessly, but with a very clear and gentle gesture. By this point, though, it would be pretty clear that the young woman was very much not a doctor.

"I did?" Valery blinked but nothing really came to mind about what happened. "I don't remember anything, but thanks for helping me." She glanced down at her body and frowned. Her chest and head were especially hurting, and the latter of those two probably explained why she couldn't remember what exactly happened, or why she was on this planet in the first place.

It was a scary thought, and she could feel Kahlil's concern about it. At least he knew she was safe now, and he'd be able to handle the kids.

Rayne then introduced herself while Valery spent a brief moment looking around. "Which uh, planet are we on?" She asked curiously before her expression suddenly brightened at the offered cup of cocoa. The mug reminded her of Vera and her army of plushies, while the cocoa itself reminded her of Aris.

He loved his mother's cocoa especially.

"So uh, what do you do out here? You don't really strike me as a doctor." She hoped she hadn't just insulted the woman, but Valery wanted to learn as much as she could and hopefully refesh her memory a bit.

"You're on Jakku," Rayne informed her. "Y'know, the gross dust ball. Must've hit your head harder than I thought if your location slipped your mind."

She took a moment to bring her hand up and assess the bandages on the stranger's forehead. She hadn't tied them too tight, had she? No, they seemed loose enough, and a quick check of her forehead indicated that she didn't have a fever...

No, wait. Rayne had a higher body temperature than her by a notable margin. Perhaps it would be better to consult a thermometer.

"So uh, what do you do out here? You don't really strike me as a doctor."

"I mean, yeah," she shrugged, cracking a faint smile. "Not really a doctor. Just a scrapper. Y'know, wandering around. Looking for bits and bobs to harvest."

She frowned a little, a look of concern growing on her face.

"I didn't take anything from your speeder," the Twi'lek assured. "It's still outside. Just... a lot flatter than you remember probably."

"Jakku?"

Well, at least that's a planet Valery had some experience with, and it might explain why she was out here to begin with. Her friend, Romi Jade, was rebuilding the Enclave that was destroyed here many years ago. Had she tried to visit to talk to her? If so, she must be worried sick.

Valery's mind shifted away from that quickly, though, when Rayne revealed what she had been fearing already — this woman was not a doctor. She tried not to show a hint of panic, and just smiled warmly, "Well, I'm very thankful that you dragged me out of the desert to patch me up. I'd have died without your help." The sun out there was brutal, and her injuries could have added to a much quicker death too.

Or would Kahlil have stepped in at that point?

"The uh, speeder can be replaced luckily. But I will need to find a way off this planet again and-" she stopped as her stomach growled all of a sudden.

How long ago had she eaten last?

"The uh, speeder can be replaced luckily. But I will need to find a way off this planet again and-" she stopped as her stomach growled all of a sudden.

Oh, she was hungry.

Rayne put a finger up before setting off to her poor excuse for a kitchen, which was really just a makeshift stove-sink arrangement and a mini-fridge. She also wasn't really much of a cook. Quick, easy to grab and go meals were the best for scrapping, as she could typically put it in her tool bag and carry it with her. The Twi'lek looked through her food supply and frowned a little, coming upon what would very much be seen as snacks for children. She really hadn't matured at all, had she?

She settled on what was probably the least embarrassing of the options, a pre-made sandwich with a fruit jelly and nut butter, all sealed in a plastic wrapping. The young woman returned and presented it to Valery, trying her best to not come off as embarrassed. She wouldn't have tone to give away her thoughts at least.

"That's all I really got," she noted with a shrug. "Uh, it has nuts, so don't eat it if you're allergic."

Rayne would frown, tilting her head as she pondered on how the woman was getting home.

"I could take you to the nearby spaceport," Rayne decided. "It's out of an older salvage-settlement, but it still sees some use. You could probably get yourself a ride home there. Probably."

Valery blinked at the offered food, but she wasn't going to be picky or weird in someone else's home after they had just saved her life. So, she accepted it with a smile and removed the plastic wrappings, "Thank you, this will help a lot," she said, uncertain about how long she had been out cold in the desert. It could have easily been a while, so her body needing food and water wasn't that strange.

Especially during her recovery time.

"If you can take me to the spaceport, I'd appreciate that a lot. But... is there something I can do for you in return? You saved my life, are sharing your food, and offering to help me get to where I need to be. Maybe I can do something for you in return?" Valery asked before the most logical answer came to mind.

"Of course, I can also pay you for all the trouble."

"Of course, I can also pay you for all the trouble."

"It's fine," Rayne assured. "Keep your credits. I don't like debts."

She had no intentions on grifting the good will of other folks. That was a pathway to lies and manipulation, false altruism for personal gain. Rayne was many things, and no doubt many flawed things, but she had a code of conduct. She spent her days collecting trash, so maybe that was her way of having some kind of standard.

"I'll stick with the good karma," she decided with a shrug. "Good will comes back around, right?"

At least that's what she liked to imagine was the case. She understood that was rather naïve.

"I'd like to think it does," Valery said with a bright smile when the woman didn't even want anything in return for the help. It demonstrated, to her, that good people were everywhere in the Galaxy. From the Jedi to core worlds and even in the Outer Rim — the Galaxy wasn't just all selfish people and darkness.

"While we travel there, would you maybe want to tell me more about yourself and this home of yours?" Valery asked while she started to look around some more again. Now that she felt confident about being able to get off-world without needing to call in her husband for help, she was more relaxed.

It made her more interested in the little things, rather than a focus on survival.

"I don't think I've seen anything like this before."

"It's one of a kind," Rayne explained through the vocoder, puffing out her chest with pride. "Built her myself. It's an old speeder-bus chassis with the legs of an old AT-TE grafted on. It's got a bunch of cool stuff in it. I mean, not like new stuff, but most of the things I found were in pretty good condition."

The sonic shower had been the biggest find, no doubt about it. It definately brought the space together, making it far more homey than it would have been if it was just her assortment of other junk.

"It's not really impressive," she noted with a sigh, "But I can go anywhere I want. People take that kind of agency for granted, I think."

She had been trapped before, held up in a sweat shop on Nar Shaddaa. It was that kind of experience that really made her value having the ability to go wherever she wanted whenever she pleased. Ultimately it was freedom that Rayne valued most in life. It was why she didn't like debts, and why she worked for herself making significantly less money.

As long as she could do what she wanted, Rayne was happy.

"Really? That sounds pretty amazing," Valery said with a smile. "I uh, need my 9-year-old daughter to help me figure out how the holo-tv works, so I can't imagine the skill it takes to make all of this work." She chuckled at the thought and looked around the woman's home with newfound appreciation. The Noble home had only recently been built too, with its architecture a blend of Keshian and Epicanthix styles.

But they had gotten professionals to do it, and definitely not built it themselves.

"I understand that feeling completely. My husband and I used to live on his ship and that freedom was quite nice. Only after we got kids, we figured settling down was better. Gives them a more steady home and makes it easier on them to make friends." Even then, the Nobles had to move several times because of the war, and once when she had believed Kahlil had died. All of it had been extremely hard on Vera, and now they had several more kids.

Hopefully, they'd be able to stay in one place again.

"Would you mind showing me how you move this home around? I'd love to see how it all works."

"Would you mind showing me how you move this home around? I'd love to see how it all works."

"Oh," Rayne frowned. "Well... it depends. I... can kind of do things with my mind, so usually I just sorta... control it. But I have a control room."

Rayne would gesture for Valery to follow, pushing past a bead curtain into the cockpit of the vessel. A sofa was there rather than a pilot's seat, and there were various controls ripped out of a smaller walker. A bobblehead of a Gamorrean man in a grass skirt was sitting on the dashboard.

"It's nothing too complicated," she explained. "Standard walker controls. I ripped them out of of an AT-ST."

She turned back with a giddy smile on her face. The young Twi'lek woman didn't excite over much, but she did really like showing off her inventions. It brought her some pride to be able to show her tech off to people.

"So, uh, kids?" Rayne noted. "What's that like?"

Not that it mattered much. Rayne landing a respectable date, let alone someone she'd actually want to have kids with... that seemed impossible. Kids just tied you down anyways. She didn't know if she wanted that loss of freedom. It did interest her though, the choice to have children. After all, her parents hadn't really wanted her.

"With your mind?" Valery blinked and looked around again. "That's... quite unique. I know there are other ships out there controlled by the mind, but not quite like this." She chuckled and genuinely seemed amazed by it all. Perhaps because she had no tech skills herself, but even then... how many people could control a construct like this with their minds?

At the gesture, Valery followed the other woman into the cockpit and glanced at all the controls. It looked a bit more familiar to her than the rest of the vehicle, but she was no walker driver either. Speeders and starships is where it stopped for her, though trying to drive something like this seemed pretty fun.

Maybe something to try one day.

"Well, I look forward to seeing it all move," she said with a chuckle.

Valery's eyes then turned back to Rayne at the question, and she smiled brightly, "It's a huge responsibility, stressful at times and you'll have a lot of sleepless nights. But... there is nothing more rewarding either. To see your kids smile, to hear them tell you that they love you, and having them happy over really silly little things — it's the best." She chuckled and smiled a motherly smile as she thought about her family.

"It's definitely not for everybody though, but if you're ready with a stable partner and like the idea, then it'll be the best decision in your life to have them."

"Sounds like a lot," Rayne admitted, "Hunkering down was probably a good call..."

Stable partner? Unlikely. Rayne lived out in a walking hunk of junk collecting trash for a living. She wasn't going to be soul searching anytime soon. That was a problem for older Rayne, not present Rayne. Besides, she liked the freedom of being able to go wherever she wanted. Wrapping herself up with a family just seemed like a ball and chain.

Maybe she just wasn't mature enough to think about it in any other way.

"Right, uh, moving," she peddled back to. "Okay."

The young scrapper opened her mind, interfacing with the tech that was within. Suddenly the controls would begin to move on their own, or more accurately under the influence of Rayne's mind. Motions could occur as though there was someone in the pilot's seat, or pilot's sofa, doing those actions, but nobody was present. The walker would begin to move, beginning to kick up sand and perambulate through the desert off towards the distant space port.

Rayne would turn back with a proud smile, puffing out her chest. She was still really young, not long into adulthood, which was pretty evident in her shifts between mature and childish behavior.

"And that's it."

"Maybe, as long as you know it's never too late to settle down with a family either. If it's not what you want right now, that's totally fine. But if a day comes when you long for that connection, then I'm sure you'll find great joy in it," Valery said with an encouraging smile. She would never want to be out on her own like this, but she did understand the people who loved that kind of freedom. There were different lifestyles for everybody.

Only 10 years ago, Valery herself wasn't even settled down and so much was uncertain.

Valery then turned to watch Rayne carefully operate the walker, and... had no idea what was happening really. The main controls seemed understandable enough, but the mechanisms and technology in here were too complex for the Jedi Master. Even if they were scrambled together.

"This is very cool. You should be really proud of yourself for it," Valery said with a grin, as she wondered...

"How fast can it go?"

"How fast can it go?"

"Faster than the average walker," Rayne assured before somewhat deflating, "But, uh, not really faster than a speeder. It can get a decent speed though. It's more homey than fast."

The Jedi Master really seemed to like fast things. Perhaps that wasn't the safest for her, given her recent incident that wound up putting her in Rayne's care in the first place. A trend, not one that the young scrapper was brave enough to observe out loud at least. She was not at all one for sudden awkward confrontations. Rayne was content to let that thought slip into the back of her mind.

"But thanks," she added, beaming a little. "I'm very proud of it. I put a lot of effort into making sure she worked just right."

It was her home after all. After Nar Shaddaa, Rayne was done settling for simply okay. If she was going to live in some trashy walker, it was gonna be the best trashy walker.

Valery snickered, "I'd have been shocked if it went faster than a speeder, but it's still impressive. People have spent years designing and refining the designs for walkers, and you built something that's faster and feels this unique. That's something to be very proud of." She smiled and turned her gaze forward again to observe how it all worked. There was a part of Valery that wanted to ask if she could drive for a bit.

But after getting into an accident, well, it was perhaps not the most reassuring thing to ask of Rayne. As far as she knew, Valery was perhaps a terrible pilot.

She wasn't — she just liked speed and often got into dangerous chases.

"Are you uh, really sure that there's nothing I can do to help make your life a bit easier out here? Whatever you're comfortable asking for."

"Are you uh, really sure that there's nothing I can do to help make your life a bit easier out here? Whatever you're comfortable asking for."

It was a lot of pressure, really. She didn't really want help, but secretly she kind of did. A part of her just wanted to express how much she wanted to stop doing everything and turn into a puddle, or lay in bed and stay there for the rest of time. All of those things seemed a little bit too difficult of an ask, but another thing came to her mind at least.

"Any tech you aren't using?" Rayne asked. "I don't really like handouts, but I won't turn my nose at a good piece of hardware."

That at least seemed honest enough, and not dipping into social leech territory.
