DESCRIPTION |
First produced and deployed by the Corporate Alliance prior to their service in the fleets of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. They served in a variety of roles, from Transports to Destroyers and were seen during operations at the Malastare Narrows and the Battle of Belderone - to name a few. Since that time, their design and operational classification has not changed, with little to no alterations or newer designs being produced that have been known. The newest iteration of the Fantail-class serves in a similar capacity, however, it more readily embraces the role and classification of a Light Destroyer or Heavy Cruiser rather than what its predecessors were classified. Equipped with a vast array of weaponry to strongly hold to its title as a Destroyer - the Fantail-class is even equipped with the Chiss Megamasers, an already rare technology outside of the Chiss Ascendency, made even rarer with the destruction of their homeworld of Csilla. The weapons are similar, though at the same time distinct from the standard Turbolasers that are deployed on warships across the Galaxy - utilizing both kinetic and laser energy to destroy a target. Of course there are problems that have arisen, most notably is the ready supply of these weapons with the destruction of Csilla, as well as the simple fact that poor understanding of how these weapons work and integrating them with foreign technologies has a noticeable drain on the systems when fired - often requiring a short cool down period afterwards to reset and recharge the system. This drawback can be somewhat mitigated due in part to the vessel's impressive array of offensive and defensive systems, ensuring that the Fantail-class is not fully dependent on these Megamaser weapon systems. Its relative size, and the need to provide as much weaponry and defensive systems possible have seen that many of its systems are highly automated, which in turn has also cut down on the size of the crew required to operate the vessel; further opening the possibility of installing additional weapon systems. Many of these automated systems oversee primary, secondary, and tertiary functions of the vessel to free up the crew for other tasks; however, these systems are still highly vulnerable to Ion-based weaponry - and in the event of their being disabled or destroyed, the burden of operating these systems would fall upon the already skeletal sized crew. Likewise, due to much of the vessel being dedicated towards carrying additional armaments and defenses, the Fantail-class is only capable of carrying a small Support Craft squadron; this coupled with many of its weapons being oriented in a Forward-Firing Arc, requires the Fantail-class to be reliant upon Carrier elements in a fleet to provide additional cover against Starfighter and Bomber Squadrons, or faster moving vessels. Without such additional support, enemy vessels would easily be more than capable of maneuvering around the slower Fantail-class and striking from its lightly defended aft section. The Fantail-class remains a definitive Destroyer, with its heavy defenses and armaments ensuring that it is more than capable of standing toe-to-toe with all save for the heaviest of Star Destroyers, even despite its smaller size. It is at home in the middle of a fleet engagement; though often requires additional support to secure its aft flank and prevent faster moving vessels from out maneuvering it and out-flanking the less maneuverable Capital Ship. As always, the Fantail-class was not intended to fully supplant or replace the older variants of the class, rather, it is intended to work alongside and augment its strengths and weaknesses with its own to provide a larger cohesive whole when placed in fleet formations. |
