    Average
  • Weight: Light

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • These lightsabers utilize a single large energy crystal both as a source of power for the emitter and as the crystal inside the lightsaber itself. This drastically simplifies the design of the hilt and allows for easier constructing of the weapon, but gives the weapon a crackling blade not unlike an unstable lightsaber. The simplified power mechanism has the effect of a bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse - that is, the weapon is rendered immune to water.
  • Two features of note are found in these prototypes - the activation button itself is a blade power adjustment knob, allowing the weapon's power to be significantly reduced for usage in training or mere incapacitation. The pommel cap is capable of adjusting the weapon's length from its standard length to a smaller size - for more precise usage.

Strengths:
  • The energy crystal's power capacity is far greater than that of a diatium power cell, and its output as such is greater. In concert with the usage of an adegan lens and refined phobium emitter, the blade of a perpetuating lightsaber is more powerful in comparison to that of a standard lightsaber. It has more power to give, after all - best to use such an advantage.
  • The usage of an energy crystal as both lightsaber crystal and power source for the weapon drastically simplifies the construction process. As such, this makes it easier to build - provided one has an energy crystal.
  • The simplified power system of a perpetuating lightsaber allows it to function even underwater, similar to a bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse.
  • The lack of dimetris circuits in the activation loop renders the lightsaber immune to deactivation at the hands of a piece of pure cortosis.

Weaknesses:
  • A perpetuating lightsaber's crystal is vulnerable to damage from significant concussive shock. Continued use of a cracked crystal will further damage it and eventually release the energy of the crystal in a large explosion when it is unable to sustain itself, thus destroying the weapon.
  • The enhanced power of the blade makes a perpetuating lightsaber more unwieldy than a normal one - even moreso than standard Sith lightsabers. Duelists preferring more acrobatic and less grounded styles of lightsaber combat will have significant difficulty adapting to a perpetuating lightsaber.
  • As is the case for every lightsaber, a perpetuating lightsaber is incapable of penetrating cortosis, phrik, beskar, and a number of other materials.
  • The crude and prototypical nature of the perpetuating lightsaber means that it is vulnerable to having its circuitry fried if it comes into contact with a lightsaber blade more powerful than a standard one. The simple systems of the weapon were designed to be able to handle a certain level of power found consistently in most lightsaber blades, no more than that. Consistent contact of more than a couple of seconds with such a lightsaber - for example, another perpetuating lightsaber, or a retrosaber - would cause the weapon's circuits to overheat and short out the emitter in a puff of smoke. Such a saber would need a full rebuild, something practically impossible to perform given the weapon's prototypical design and the limited availability of any spare parts.

DESCRIPTION
The perpetuating lightsaber is one of Vanessa Vantai's attempts to improve upon baseline lightsaber technology, having studied the many benefits and flaws of traditional weapons. Examinations of varying styles of lightsabers, from the earliest protosabers and Sith lightsabers to more recent Jedi and Sith blades, pointed out flaws in the base constructive design of the weapon and areas where such technology could be improved.

A perpetuating lightsaber looks like any ordinary lightsaber at first glance - if a bit crude, the prototype hilts milled out of an agrinium cylinder. Upon activation, the crackling, almost serrated-looking blade is the first indication to any potential enemy that the weapon is different from its fellows. These sabers with crystals of many colors were taken to the Trayus Laboratory, carefully shaped, and placed within the agrinium hilts. The crystals themselves are much larger than a standard lightsaber crystal, running through nearly half the hilt's length and filling the slot that would otherwise be occupied by a diatium power cell. Upon pressing the button, a basic activation loop of energy is created through the crystal itself, the emitter matrix, and a connector between the emitter and the crystal. This crude system of circuitry allows the energy crystal to both power the weapon and serve as the lightsaber's crystal, drastically simplifying the weapon's operation.

Tests with these prototype weapons revealed them to be a mixed bag - they were more powerful than their standard counterparts, invulnerable to the trappings of water, and their lack of dimetris circuits in the activation loop rendered them immune to the disabling effects of pure cortosis. However, they were surprisingly unwieldy - almost as much as an actual physical vibrosword - and their crystals were vulnerable to being cracked by significant concussive shock from explosions. Tests with a lightsaber left active after its crystal was deliberately cracked resulted in its extremely violent destruction after a couple of hours of observation, the blade growing more and more unstable as the powerful energies run through the crystal further damaged it until it was incapable of handling the strain. Tests with two more cracked crystals were inconclusive at hammering down a time period for the crystal's decay - the first lasted several hours before giving out while the second destroyed itself after less than ten minutes of activation. As such, recommendations are to dismantle the lightsaber and replace the crystal if the blade begins to show signs of crystal damage.

Ten prototype hilts were manufactured. The first had a red crystal and was tested extensively before being put on display within the Trayus Laboratory as a successful Sith construct. The second, third, and fourth had blue crystals and were destroyed violently through destructive testing. The fifth also had a red crystal and was held within the Trayus Laboratory for emergency use if Vanessa ever needed it. The sixth originally possessed a green crystal, but this was replaced with a violet crystal by Vallory after Vanessa gave her the lightsaber and replacement crystal in question. The seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth hilts are located in a rack within the Trayus Laboratory. The seventh hilt is fully assembled with a clear crystal, while the other three are partially disassembled, lacking their crystals and are thus inoperable.
