Pain and Gain [Republic Dominion of Attahox]

A green hand wrapped around the wrist that was offered to hoist her up. She didn’t reciprocate in thought or voice, instead collected her misplaced weaponry and stubbornly fell into action on his command. Irritated though she may be, she was still one to follow orders.

“Lets get this place cleaned for some actual progress to happen.” The emerald woman murmured, drawing the flat side of her blade against her thigh to wipe the crimson liquid from it’s silver plating. She cast a glance in [member="Trevin Neros"]’ direction, before they took the stairs to escalate themselves to the designated floor and rendezvous with members of the Glowstick Brigade. Perhaps the first thing that was heard was the silent whirr of mechanics tinkering away, the second would be voices that were perhaps attempting to be mute. Still, the conversation carried to her ears as the trio of warriors crept through the facility. "You going to put that thing to good use?" Gala asked in [member="Zane Watts"]' direction, giving an indicative tilt of her head should he need any more clues as to what she was referring to.

Don't get too many ideas, boy.

"I always put my tool to good use," Zane said, obviously mind in the gutter to keep himself amused. There was little humour in his voice, however, as he swept the hallways back and forth with the barrel of his elongated blaster rifle. He was on point, taking charge of the situation with his ivory battle armour with ebon tabard; as a Jedi and as a soldier he prided himself on being first amongst equals. His jaw was set with grim determination, intent on keeping his team alive and taking victory in his own hands.

It showed in the way he moved here, dominating every movement through these hallowed halls.

Right now there was nothing.

"I don't like this. Too quiet," Zane commented, still melded to his fellows - but still not triggering the Force here. "This place should be crawling."

Then, a message to [member="Aaralyn Rekali"]. By text, short, sweet and to the point. Status?

Tia followed Corvus to the exit ramp, watching it descend as they approached. Almost immeadiately the smell of the city invaded the ship - a lingering, acrid, sooty stink that didn't appeal to Tia'Ilandra at all. She assumed that the city must drawn some of its power needs from incinerators if the smell was to be believed.

The picture that greeted them as they disembarked was no more appealing. The city, if one where to call this place a city, was bathed in a sickly yellowish tinge; A product, she supposed, of the sunlight filtering through the gases which were being released into the increasingly noxious atmosphere. The rubble strewn landing site on the outskirts of the city could have been mistaken for a dumping ground on any other planet, were it not for the guidelights and barely recognizable marker beacons. On one side sat the dirty mismatched buildings of the city and behind them a shallow lake of a clear yellow liquid that shimmered like an oil slick in the light.

She didn't like this planet, of that Tia was immediately convinced. On the horizons she saw no trees or lakes - just trash. Old wrecked ships corroding in the open air, ruined structures the size of city blocks just deposited here, tons upon tons of refuse left to rot and decay.

"Do the people choose to live here?" she asked as Corvus descended behind her, Tia turned back to walk on toward the populated streets beyond the landing site. The look on the Padawan's face would be enough to read how she was feeling about this planet if Corvus' gifts did not.

[member="Corvus Raaf"]

As Corvus led, Tia followed. As bad as the city smelled, Corvus had faced worse. And she made every effort to hide her distaste. Nothing upset the locals more than immediately telling them their planet stunk!

No words were spoken but Corvus was impressed that Tia, to her credit, was following suit. ‘Not exactly the stuff of picture postcards.’ Corvus touched her Padawan’s mind gently. ‘But then, if anyone deserves our help, it’s people that have to live in conditions like these.’

Corvus took in the buildings and the rubbish. And more rubbish. And then trash as far as the eye could see. Aware her eyes were starting to water due to the noxious fumes, she fumbled in her pockets and pulled out a couple of pairs of nose-plugs. She handed one to Tia and inserted the other into her nasal passages. Invisible to the eye but a god-send to the olfactory organs.

“What they don’t know won’t hurt them.” Her voice sounded slightly nasally but unless you knew her well you’d assume it was normal, or she had a slight cold.

And she listened to Kia’s question. It was a fair one. “Choose? I fear they don’t even get to choose life. So where you get to live probably comes down the pecking-order.”

Looking around, Corvus saw nothing that had a sign that declared it was a temporary headquarters of self-appointed freedom-fighter leadership, but she did see a building that looked well defended to her left. “What do you say we go an introduce ourselves?” And with that, she pulled up her hood and strode purposefully forward.

[member="Tia'Ilandra Shaasa"]

As she followed her master Tia'Ilandra was distracted by the oily surface of the nearby lake, the faint rainbow of colours seemed oddly out of place in a place as dreary as this one.

Not exactly the stuff of picture postcards.’

It had taken her a while to get used to Corvus' thoughts appearing in her head - if she was honest with herself she was still getting used to it. Less of an alien sensation than it had first been on Rhen Var, Tia now found the intimate form of communication oddly satisfying, she would enjoy learning that if her master felt it appropriate.

She took proffered the nose plugs and followed suit, immediately unhappy with the uncomfortable sensation they provided whilst simultaneously relieved to have at least a little of the smell dulled. It helped enough but she was convinced that she could still taste the smell in the air she breathed.

Tia followed her master's gaze to the more obviously reinforced building some distance from the landing site, seeing what her master had spotted; Windows that seemed somewhat blocked, rugged yet corroded vehicles parked where they might be used as makeshift barricades and a small group of nervous looking locals in long acid resistant over-cloaks that would ordinarily be used to work in the toxic environment of the garbage heaps. They looked bulky and misshapen, whether the cloaks were hiding battered armour or weapons was anyone’s guess, Tia supposed that the people here could be augmented for all that she had been able to learn of the planet during the trip.

“What do you say we go an introduce ourselves?”

She followed her masters example and raised her hood to cover her montrals before following at Raaf's side. “I suppose it would only be polite to do so Master.”

As they approached a figure broke away from the bunch, a tall chunky looking woman with misted goggles covering her eyes, she was chewing something dark and sticky looking, unappetizing to Tia at least. She wondered perhaps if it was something to dull the woman’s sense of smell?

She didn't speak, just placed herself in their path and looked the two Jedi up and down with what Tia would judge as an unimpressed frown curling the edge of her lips.

[member="Corvus Raaf"]

Corvus walked up to the well-proportioned woman, gave a small bow and acted as if the Queen of Naboo had just been introduced. "Good day to you. I am Jedi Master Raaf and this is my Padawan Tia'Ilandra Shaasa. This is my first time on your planet. It is so kind of you to greet us. Is there somewhere less public we could chat?"

Corvus smiled through the conversation but attempted nothing underhand. She'd see how the woman would react before using the Force. A few seconds passed and Corvus wondered if she needed to speak again, but she exercised her enormous capacity for patience and kept her smile fixed.

Finally the woman nodded, grunted an acknowledgement and started to walk towards the building. 'Charming!' Corvus offered to Tia. "Sorry, but I didn't quite catch your name," she shared with the woman.

[member="Tia'Ilandra Shaasa"]

Tia was quiet for now, she seemed content to learn from her master for the moment, taking note of Raaf's manners, her enthusiasm and the positivity she tried to instil into the conversation.

Despite her masters efforts this woman still seemed quite cold to Tia, rude certainly but perhaps even disdainful of them. Corvus remained patient, though as the silence continued Tia's apprehension grew.

Perhaps she should say something? Tia'Ilandra swallowed and considered the first words of a similarly breezy welcome to that her master had given.

“H-... ” she almost started to speak when the woman broke the stand-off, nodded to Corvus with a grunt and turned to walk away.

'Charming!' Corvus offered to Tia. "Sorry, but I didn't quite catch your name,"

The big woman paused still facing away and let out a long tired, perhaps even exasperated sigh. She turned slowly on the spot to face them again, reaching up to flip open a flap on the breast of her cloak to reveal a grimy, faded and well worn symbol, that clearly meant something to a local Attahoxian. Maybe a symbol of authority Tia considered.

Warden Hulla, shift warden at the south station house,” she replied with a gesture to the barricaded building. Tia noted a similar symbol now on the frame of the building, obscured by the muck and apparent vandalism. “Pleased to meet you” she continued with barely concealed sarcasm.

She turned to head on again, looking to the others watching from the cover around the station house. “ Master Jedis...” Hulla called out with a similarly tired tone and a shake of the head. “Better tell Vort to boil up a brew...”

“That sounds nice..”

[member="Corvus Raaf"]

It was a good thing that her emotions were under lock and key because - if not - well this meeting was comedic in something approaching epic proportions. Tia's understated optimism at the prospect of a brew was almost too much - even with her durasteel wall in place in her mind.

Corvus considered continuing in the same vein but decided discretion was the better part of valour and that her tone and words might come across as sarcastic - which of course they would be.

"Well Warden Hulla, is Vort expecting us?" She decided on the direct approach and kept her voice light and airy. In truth the insignia meant nothing to her and she didn't want to risk offending their hosts through showing her ignorance. All the while she checked their surroundings. She momentarily closed her eyes and using Force Sight built up a quick mental map. On the plus side there were no Sith around. And the pluses pretty much ended there. What she saw were lots of people with very, very big guns.

[member="Tia'Ilandra Shaasa"]

Ponderous was the best word Tia could call upon to describe Hulla, she didn't appear to be in any sort of hurry to get where they were going. The other Wardens – Tia assumed – appeared to defer to Hulla, parting to let them pass without comment. For her part the weary seeming Warden seemed to act as if she was the boss, if not in rank at least in attitude.

She didn't look back as she gave the door a quick rap and listened for what sounded like the clunk of a weighty locking mechanism retracting.

“Vort makes the tea, he ain't a bleeding psychic.” she grunted stepping aside as the heavy door swung outward. “We go in here, you have a brew and I call up watch command, see what we is suppose' to be doing with Master Jedi visitors?”

She waited for Corvus and Tia to enter before moving on again, spitting a gob of the black stuff into a spittoon by the doorway noisily before licking her dry lip.

Tia simply waited to see how Raaf would proceed. She thought the woman Hulla, if that was a woman, quite disgusting, she tried to keep her disgust from showing on her face. She imagined that Master Raaf would remain mannerly, calm, civilised.

Despite having no natural empathic ability such as her Masters, Tia was confident the woman offered no deception. There was something forthright about her, a simple no nonsense attitude to Hulla that might be quite admirable if once could see past her physical peculiarities.

She just stood there, patient as a the trash piled around this planet, chewing, watching the Jedi, one hand not too far from whatever weapon was kept concealed beneath that coat, but in no hurry to draw it. Confident, Trained, Tia realised that she very much wanted to know this woman’s story.

It would have to wait.

[member="Corvus Raaf"]

Corvus glanced at Tia as they walked along the street. There were a lot of similarities between them. Not the same by any stretch but enough for her to draw positive comparisons of her charge. She desired the path of a true Jedi and the role of a guardian was not for her. But like Corvus before her she was drawn in to this aspect of their duty because of her strong belief in the Code and its pillars.

But Corvus brought her mind back to the here and now and as subtly as she could took a back-seat to Tia. This was her plan, so let’s see how she handled it.

Corvus wanted to chuckle at the warden. She was either a master of comedy or a natural that just didn’t know it. ”Tea, yes. Lovely.” She glanced at Tia. She’d have to teach her Telepathy sooner rather than later if they were to go on missions like this.

Corvus took no apparent notice of the spittoon or the woman’s use of it but wondered, in this world of so little, if the contents were ever…upcycled. She decided to give the tea a miss, just in case.

And so they stood, waiting. The warden had clearly exercised her daily quota of speech and they would have to wait here for the watch command to give instruction. Suppressing the desire to whistle, Corvus decided to fill the vacuum of silence another way. “Um…how long have you been a warden?”

[member="Tia'Ilandra Shaasa"]

It was with absolutely no build up, ceremony, pomp or aplomb that Warden Hulla led them into the nerve centre of Lakeside City South Starport Station House.

It wasn't a particularly impressive sight; The watch room was dominated by a single long, wide and stained wooden table, which was notable in itself as so far it was practically the only organic material on display in this town. The worn and well marked table and its surrounding chairs took up the greatest extent of the room, leaving only a slim gangway through the room to reach a trio of remaining doors. One of the doors was open and the sounds of burbling liquid coming to the boil could be heard from within.

The other doors were closed, one heavily locked, if they were to hazard a guess as to what lay beyond it would probably be the stations armory or lock up. The last door looked like it led to another hallway, but for now Tia couldn't be sure.

Hulla gestured to the seats and moved on to fiddle with a wall mounted communication panel, “Vort!” Hulla yelled suddenly, banging on the open door frame, “Wake up and get us three brews for meself and the Master Jedis.” she looked back to Raaf a look of exasperation, she shook her head with a curled lip showing off gnarled teeth and the black residue.

Tia'Ilandra took the initiative and accepted the offered chair, settling at the large table with a polite smile.

A moment later a the sound of grinding servos heralded the arrival of a small flat topped droid with four spindly serving arms. The little robot was caddying a stained and well worn tray with three robust looking mugs of dark brown-black liquid, it was impossible to tell how it smelled with the noseplugs in but Hulla fished a mug in passing and took a long satisfied slurp. Master Raaf politely declined the offered mug, but Tia felt obliged to indulge her host some. She accepted the mug in both hands, feigning a sniff before taking a good deep draught.

Fire and pepper...

The brew, whatever it consisted off, could strip paint off the walls and probably melt through scrap metal if the heat in the back of Tia's throat was to be trusted. She kept smiling, holding Hulla's gaze as she felt her eyes beginning to water. Despite the burn the after-taste was actually quite pleasant. It probably killed off the locals sense of smell too which could only be a bonus she supposed.

Hulla inhaled sharply through her nose, a frightful nasal sound that Tia totally understood.

Its great Tia offered weakly.

Hulla gave a slow grin at that, seemingly pleased with the youngsters gumption. “I just call in see what they say at central.. Central, Central, 15 South calling, we got two Jedi 8 14's here looking to talk to our Leaders, you got an eyeball on Marinn? Over.”

She deactivated the broadcaster and looked to the Jedi again, “They sound like they're gonna ask around. Should be quick once Mayor Marinn gets on.”

The watch room was sparsely decorated, one wall dominated by a vast, yellowing map of the city, it looked old enough to be outdated and someone had helpfully sketched other shapes as the city changed. Tia idly studied the map as Raaf spoke to Hulla again.

“Um…how long have you been a warden?”

The big warden looked at Tia's master, her empty hand lifting her goggles for a better look at the Jedi. She took another long drag of her brew, exhaling through her nose once again and examining Corvus slowly with sharp cobalt blue eyes, sizing her up it seemed. After what felt like too long a gap she opened her mouth and sighed.

“Eleven years I been here,” she replied slowly “shipped out this way with the 100th, discharged and took this post the next day,”

Tia listened with interest, so the warden had been a soldier, maybe she took a brain injury or something Tia thought, somewhat unkindly.

“an you? How long you been Master Jedis?”

Talon's Starlight-class freighter dropped from hyperspace with a silent flash and began transmitting across months old jed ifrequencies. His bright green eyes shown like emerald stars as he looked out the cockpit viewport and smiled. Those same eyes closed as he stretched out in the force to find familiar presences. There were a few but they shown like blue suns where they were once candles. He had once told them they would be pillars of the Order and it seems an 'I told you so' was in order. HIs eyes opened and he activated the cockpit transmitter.

"This is Talon Vosra of the Starlight-class freighter "Bright Star" to republic personnel." he said keeping his voice calm, "sorry I'm late the invitation got lost in the mail."

Corvus observed Tia. Not in an awkward way. She was assessing her Padawan and how she acted and reacted to the situation. It was one thing to do well in a warm classroom on Ossus. She made a mental note to check on the heating bills when they got back. As a rule the classrooms were too warm and perhaps could be turned down a degree.

But back to the here and now, she was able to watch as Tai appraised the room – subtly – and how she was working with their host to build up a rapport of trust.

Corvus shuddered at the mental image of Vort making three brews. A Sith Lord on Zeltros she could take in her stride. A mug of tea of dubious origin on a planet like this? The pay was no way good enough to take these sorts of risks.

So Corvus was pleasantly surprised when a droid came through with the ‘brews.’ She was aware of Tia’s more sensitive sense of smell and taste and found her bravery in taking a gulp of the liquid remarkable. Corvus chose to warm her hands on the outside of her mug and cradle it.

But at least her efforts to break the ice were working. The warden seemed pleased to talk on the subject and with what seemed to be an element of pride.

” Eleven years, eh? Commendable. As for me, I’ve been a Jedi since I was four. A Master less than a year now. It’s just a title at the end of the day. It’s who you are and what you do that counts.”

At that moment, her comms unit received an incoming message. She smiled at the warden and glanced at it. ”Seems we have another Master joining us. And don’t worry about making him another tea. He can have mine.” She smiled politely and sent a quick message back to Master Vosra, sharing their location. She made sure to mention he should hurry as his tea was getting cold!

[member="Talon Vosra"] | [member="Tia'Ilandra Shaasa"]

With master Raaf acknowledging whatever comm message they had received Tia was free to continue her robust 'brew' and keep on studying the map of the city. She glanced to Hulla again as she spoke of her years in the military, that certainly answered some of Tia's unasked questions.

The warden unfastened a couple of straps beneath the shoulder of her rubberised cloak and the let it fall over her outstretched forearm in a manoeuvre rendered impressively casual through years of practice, beneath was a dull olive green uniform, bleached in many places by the corrosive rain, but otherwise immaculately pressed. It was a stark contrast indeed to the almost haggard looks of the wearer. Her hair was revealed to be held back in a tight blonde bun already greying significantly.

“Another one of you..” she let out another long sigh as if this was all very very irregular. “I ask myself what this place is coming to, Master Jedis and bleedin' Crooks everywhere all of a sudden, someone ought to have told you lot this place is mostly a glorified dump...”

She gave the little droid a nudge, “See if you can find the Jedis somethin' edible.”

The droid let out two atonal trills, to its credit it managed to sound almost as tired as Hulla as it trudged back into the canteen.

“The crooks,” Tia spoke up nodding to Hulla empathetically, “They have been in the city then?”

“Aye, They have little'un” she confirmed to Tia, and followed on with a degree of annoyance “surprised you didn't hear, they took the whole of the north landing, paid off that snarky karkaband Warden Kiorn didn't they, let them walk in, the craven.”

Tia had no idea what a snarky karkaband might be but the tone suggested that she really didn't want to either.

“Then they come down here next, next biggest star port, tell me to open up.” She smiled to herself and chortled, “Didn't expect me and the team to open up quite like we did I reckon. Since then it been g'rilla warfare is all.”

So the criminal enterprise had taken control of one of the cities landing zones in the north and failed to do the same to the south, she noted another smaller site on the east and reminded herself to ask about it at some point.

“The Republic forces have engaged the criminals already, but I cannot pretend that I feel like something more should have been done sooner to ensure the safety of the people here.” Tia explained honestly, “My master and I would like to do what we can to make up for lost time.”
[member="Corvus Raaf"] | [member="Talon Vosra"]

A crackle of hot static broke the conversation there for the moment, Hulla stopping before her reply even had time to begin

“... South 15... South 15 this is Central, be advised we are sending a transport to collect the Jedi representatives, we'll take over from here Warden, just sit tight, over?”

The voice that replied was male, a little distorted over the old equipment but the accent that reached Tia was closer to Master Raaf's than it was Hulla's.

Hulla sat back exhaling long and slow through her nose. She sneered a little and shook her head to the radio as if sharing her scorn with the voice at the other end. Her big hand hovered above the control bead for the reply.

After a moment she tutted to herself still shaking her head.

“Is..”

Tia started to ask a question to the old soldier, but she just raised a hand as if to silence any questions for a moment before depressing the comm button.

“... Central... I hear you, I said I want to speak to Marinn.”

There followed a pause that was too long to be quite natural before the comm coughed back into life.

“Mayor Marinn is engaged in duties at the moment Warden, he has approved this order however..”

Hulla raised a single brow, incredulous it seemed, but then she smiled and turned on what little charm she seemed to possess.

“Damn shame, tell you what is Warden Dubro their for a chatter? His shift today right?”

She took her finger off the comm receiver and looked to Raaf and Shaasa, speaking over the radio reply

“Warden Dubro called in sick..”

“Get ready to move, this is going to be ugly...” she stated flatly before pressing the button again, “That's a crying shame central, over.”

She released the comm button again and stood looking to the Jedi, Gettup! We're moving now..”

“A Problem?” Tia'Ilandra asked, glancing to her master as she shifted to her feet. She was a little concerned that this might turn to violence in short order; Tia had discovered that she quite liked the sour Hulla and was pretty sure that she didn't want trouble with the big woman.

“Snark,” she cursed beneath her breath as she reattached her battered cloak, “There ain't a Warden Dubro...”

[member="Corvus Raaf"] | [member="Talon Vosra"]

Corvus discarded the tea. She almost felt apologetic but the dull thud of the mug as she put it on the table suggested whatever was up ahead couldn't possibly be worse than having to drink that.

"OK, Padawan. Warden." She faced them both in turn. "We're definitely moving. And do we have a plan that goes along with this...travelling?" As she spoke she also sent a quick message to Master Vosra.

Change in plan. In transit. Will confirm location when settled. Everything not as it seems. Trust no-one (except the Force, of course).

"Ladies..." she waved her hand towards the exit. "After you."

Talon landed and hopped out of his fighter. His bare feet slapped the deck and he began to get a look around.

::Understood. Keep me posted::

Talon kept his lightsaber well out of sight as he walked around the landing pad. He made sure to act like he was inspecting his ship and kept to himself.
