Sometimes ships didn't make check in. Whether from false flight plans, or wrecking in a nebulae, it was anyone's guess. But reports were surfacing from near Recee that any ship that entered the system essentially fell off the charts, and was never seen again. Sailors were calling it, "The Black Hex." A hex where many of them now dared not venture.

Naturally trade was affected in the area. A singular Skiff managed to limp into the Dockyards above Xa Fel, its ragged crew rife with tales of grandiose Pirate Fleets, and deathly torture at the hands of their captors. They were given refuge, and a task force was spun up.

A Pirate threat or not, whatever was growing near Recee threatened the delicate Peace of the Fledgling Corporate Protectorate. Whether Profits of People were concerned, they were averse to losing either.

Battle Group 1 is pushing out to confront the threat, and put an end to it.

But they are not aware they are stumbling into the clutches of something darker, and more sinister. Thus Operation Dagger begins......

 • STORY HOOK 1: A small Flotilla has been spotted on scanners on the far side of Recee. They appear to be a mix of Action IV's running TIE Fighter escorts. In typical fashion they are painted down with skulls, and have resisted all attempts to hail them. Go and check it out.

 • STORY HOOK 2: There's good intel that a that a majority of ships crews are imprisoned on the surface down below, which apparently has been turned into a Fortress Stockade. A Pirate Stronghold cannot be allowed to exitst on the surface. Take the Fortress and Rescue the Prisoners. Only then can the Protectorate Secure this world.

 • STORY HOOK 3: There's plenty of wreckage floating in orbit around Recee. So much that it was nicknamed by Praetorian Security Corp as the "Grave Yard Ring." There's a few transponders active, that are pinging a distress code. Those folks probably need a lift. Or it's a trap. Either way you'll have to go in via Star Fighter as the debris field is too dense for anything larger....

 • Try to Tackle these stories in pairs and see them through! We'll start out just arriving in system, right to the good stuff.

 • I'll be DMing from time to time if the story gets too stale.

 • Quality over Quantity. Happy Hunting!

STORY HOOK 1
ABOARD -- CPS FANG (Shield Class Star Destroyer)
ARRIVING
ORDER OF BATTLE
CPS FANG
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They'd only just arrived in system when the scanners went haywire. The Consul was farther back from the action this time. CPS Fang had a capable Captain and XO. No this time she was here to watch and lend support if need be. She preferred not to.

Captain Rex Castle, affectionately know to his crew as the "Brickhouse" took a long drag from his pipe. Ari watched with curious eyes as the brown haired barrel chested Captain barked his order, aligning the Advanced Destroyer and her singular Escort.

"All hands set Condition One!"

"Sir, we're picking up a literal feth ton of distress beacons. We can't even begin to decode them."

"Start at the top of the list. Pick a spot."

--

"XO! Order Highgarden to prep her fighters on alert. Naval Intel say's we got a hot mess on the other side of this rock. We're going to slingshot around, and try to catch them from behind."

"No doubt they've already noticed us sir."

"We still have the advantage of speed and violence of action. We get there before they have time to arrange their formation, and we might take a few down before they can react."

"Aye sir."

Engines roared to full, as the small two ship task-force rocketed forwards, angling prow first into the magnetic grip of Recee. Ari did quick summations in her head of their angles, and the proximity of the debris field. The helmsman was stalwart, and guided them with deft hands.

She closed her eyes, and began a rhythmic breathing, opening the floodgates of the force. The darkside reached out, casting a wide net. What scanners could not decode, she could. Life had a signature to it, but decoy distress signals were all the same....

CPS HIGHGARDEN
HANGAR BAY 31C
COMMANDER BISHOP
FLYING GALA FIGHTER
AXE WING

Things had been quiet since Selvaris for the Commander and his Wing. He'd only just gotten his Gala Fighter back into operational condition and loaded onto the Highgarden when they were sent abroad. Either way he didn't mind the distraction. A little duty rotation helped him break the cycle of drinking and gambling in the Capitol of Xa Fel back home.

From one side of the flight deck to the other Deck Chiefs were scrambling to get the last bits in order before launch. Ten of the fighters were almost topped off with fuel, and Commander Bishop was doing the final walk around visual check of his air-frame before they pushed out.

"T Minus Ten to launch."

The Pilots milled about, all contractors with Praetor Security Corp. Some had discipline issues he noted. Most egregious was the drinking of some of the seniors before mission. He didn't have time now, but he;d put a quick fix to that.

"Axe wing, gather round."

They fell into a sort of semi circle formation.

Disgraceful.

"Listen up, we got tasked with checkin' out the "Graveyard."' Now there's no tellin' what might be awaitin' us, so keep it sharp and tight. We got a whole wing of twenty four fighters, and a feth ton in reserve. We shouldn't need to launch them. Axe Wing will close in, engage whatever is out there and get to the bottom of this."

--

"Flight plans are already locked in, engines are hot. Any questions?"

There was none. By now Axe Wing knew better than that.

"Great, mount up then boys and girls. Let's hunt some filth!"

He swept the lining of his cheek with his pinky, throwing a wad of dip into the nearby trashcan.

A leap got him up the ladder, and strapped into the crash harness.

The Cockpit sealed, and a holographic projection of their launch time appeared.

One minute....

Location: Near the CPS Fang

A small, yet extremely fast craft zoomed through space, calmly slicing through the vacuum towards a much larger vessel which had at least one soul aboard that was particulary interesting to the person aboard the smaller craft. The Valkan Dagger, as the small electrum coated craft was named, started to slow down when nearing the large Shield Star Destroyer, hailing it with the intent to dock in one of its hangars.

"CPS Fang, this is the Valkan Dagger, requesting to come aboard," The man within the Valkan dagger wondered what the response would be, he could either try and give them his name or maybe just play on the fact that this WAS after all a ship from a faction known to revolve around money and politics. "I repeat, this is Credius Arcosius Nargath, Marquis of House Nargath, chairman of the board of the Eriadu Manufacturing Shipyards aboard the Valkan Dagger, requesting to commense docking procedures. I'm here on invitation of her Excellency, Lady Zanareth."

It was never bad to throw around a name which carried a lot of weight within these systems and adding on to that his own illustrious nobility, Credius had no doubt those managing the hangars and the clearance wouldn't be that stupid to ignore all of the mentioned names, titles and positions which were mentioned in that single sentence.

Her meditation was cut short. A voice buzzed over the comms, granting Credus safe passage. An Officer leaned in and whispered to her ear. She nodded.

"Bring him in then."

She'd heard of the man, yet never met him. Though they were in battle, she always had time to meet new folks. Especially if those folks could be counted upon to be possible allies to the cause.

He'd be escorted by two Praetor Guards.

When the bridge opened she greeted him with a smile, and a small bow. She could sense the force, like a faint mist in the air.

"Lord Nargath, a Pleasure."

Dark and loud… that’s how Avery would describe the transport ship carried him and the Soldiers that accompanied him. Avery knew his mission. He’d been briefed about many times before he had arrived to the transport. He knew it would be easy too, just kill some pirates? That was a thing he’d done long before he had even joined the Protectorate. But still, he had a deep feeling that this wouldn’t be as ordinary as he first thought. He almost hope that it wasn’t as ordinary as he thought, He craved a fight. Something to loosen him up. And after what Consul Zanareth had taught him, he felt more than ready to slice into the body of someone.

Avery knew that this was going to be easy, not because of the pirates, no that was nothing. No, it was the prisoners that would be the way. Easy shields for pirates and if Avery didn’t want to stain the Protectorate’s good name then he’d have to avoid revealing himself and the soldiers. which just so happened to be the prisoners. “Great,” Avery thought as they neared the landing zone,”well, maybe it’ll be a challenge? No, just an obstacle.” Avery had no doubt in his own skill in stealth, no. it was the soldiers that accompanied him but that didn’t mean they were useless. He had a plan.

As the transport positioned itself above the drop zone the hatch open. After which Avery and a Thirty soldiers slid from ropes down to the ground. The soldiers gathered around Avery, who then pulled up a hologram of the base and the surrounding area. He had a plan. One he hoped will work. For the next ten minutes he instructs the soldiers to surround the building and when he gave the single, they would shoot at any visible pirates. Avery, himself, would sneak into the base and free the prisoners.

Avery watched as the soldiers got into position. He then slid down a hill and made his way to the base.

Slowly descending into the appointed hangar, Credius opened up the sliding cockpit door of his Valkan Dagger, looking at the reception that was apparently awaiting him, with some maintainance crew standing about, ready to inspect the ship thoroughly, no doubt for any traps, bombs or anything that could be a trap to their faction, but he didn't care all that much about those guys anyway. What did interest him, was the arrival of what appeared to be some sort of elite guard, a small set of soldiers ready to escort him to someone at the very least impoortant enough to warrant a military escort to begin with.

Deciding not to wear the long fluttering romex cape which he usually wore, Credius' attire was still pretty impressive, with silks and precious metals interwoven and intertwined into a form fitting combination of trousers, veston and overcoat, with as finishing touch the fluttery cravate and large jewel he seemed to always wear no matter the attire he wore it with.

Finally being brought to the bridge, he noticed a scent, a whiff, a jittery feeling which only could be put upon him when someone with at least a veritable presence in the force was near him. His silvery white eyes instantly darted towards the woman greeting him, in return he too raised his hand to his chest and made a solemn, courteous bow towards the one he pressumed to be his host. "Your excellency, the pleasure is all mine," Raising himself to his full hight again, the man showed a swift, faint smile on his clean-shaven face. "It seems that I have arrived at a rather difficult timing, my apologies."

Almost ignoring the preatorian guards and even the frivolities of knowing who was in charge or who commanded the vessel, the Eriaduan noble simply strode calmly to the front of the bridge to have a better view at what it was they were dealing with. "Dealing with pirates...I see," His brow arched upwards when noticing the small established force of starfighters. "Any idea why they are present within this system, Lady Zanareth?"

With the their slingshot approach underway, she stepped back from the tac map and glanced to her new compatriot.

"I expect that they sense the core has been weakened by infighting. It's a perfect system to inhabit for them. Far away enough that they have time to evacuate if a larger power pursues them, but close enough to snatch prey and disrupt shipping headed from the core to outer regions. It's exactly what I would do in their situation."

Meanwhile the Commander of the vessel roared the typical, "Fire when ready!"

Thankfully the Shield Class did not require an inordinate amount of crew. The gunnery officer simply spoke his commands to the ship, which interpreted his wishes via the supercomputer. As they closed in on the rear of the unsuspecting armada, missiles blasted away in droves.

They were followeed by the tungsten heavy rounds, disgorged as near light speed by their Railguns. Two of them clipped an engine block, decimating the circuitry, Immediate chain reactions spider-webbed along the hull as it crumbled in upon itself.

The missiles met their mark as well, pummeling another Action IV so hard that its armor came apart at the seams.

The jig was up however.

They were now no longer running on the element of surprise.

Ari raised an eyebrow.

The Captain was good, but now she'd see just how good.

"Shields full, cut engines to half. Re direct power to Shield Generators. Prepare to scramble Fighter reserves."

Tacer watched as the man in charge pointed them to their objective. Surround the base, kill all they could when the signal was given. Tacer continued eyeing the commander as he slid down the small hill, slipping int0 the compound at the same time. Now came the most difficult part of the job. Waiting. Tacer could handle the wait but he feared that nis men couldn’t. He’d ambushed people before, some successful, some not. But most of his soldiers were new, on account of the massive loose that his squad sustained on the “liberation” of Selvaris.

Tacer had seen death before. Hell, he looked it right in the eyes a couple times. But these new soldiers haven’t. They haven’t looked down the barrel of a gun, shooting down anything that moved. Tacer had though. And he would try his best and make sure these new recruits led by his example.

“Alright men, the commander says we are to act on his signal.” Tacer whispered into his wrist communicator, “He says? Didn’t think he did that much.” one of the soldiers coughed back in response, “Jak, shut up. Alright, when the commander comes out with the prisoners be ready.” Tacer looked out from the tree he was using as cover, his gaze scanning the base, it was quiet and brightly lit. tacer than looked to the other trees across and beside his. Soldiers popped their heads out, all of them giving nods.

“Alright, now we wait.” Tacer said as he loaded his rifle.

"This ship isn't half bad," Credius remarked calmly when being witness to how the captain managed to take out a few of the pirates by using simple voice commands, allowing the highly automated ship to just follow the commands without fault. A system the Marquis wouldn't mind putting in one of the projects of his own company. Though he also wondered if there was a possibility to try and salvage what would be left of these pirates after they'd be done with them. After all, even if their ships would end up being destroyed, getting his hands on technology from other companies was never a bad thing. Especially when he could have his people reverse engineer and even improve upon them. "It is just a shame that the Corporate protectorate seems to lack more refined shipbuilding, given that this ship does look like a flying brick in outer space fom the outside. Effective perhaps, but it does not convey the same... spirit that many other fleets seem to have. Perhaps if you would permit me, I would not mind presenting some...projects at a more suitable time."

Walking over to the bridge, Credius gave a respectful nod to the captain, wanting to have a good luck at what they were facing exactly. "May I inquire, Madame Consul...how many fighters and interceptors do you have currently stationed in this ship?" This was not a question to get all the ins and outs of the ship, but more of a logistical question, as Credius knew the only way to get the protectorate's corporate backing and licenses would be by displaying some of his own cunning and intellect, perhaps even skill if necessary. "My Valkan dagger may not be a starfighter, but it is possible one of the most speedy and maneuvrable vessels currently on board. So if necessary... I might simply commandeer a starfighter of yours and join when you see fit for deployment."

Fireson was ready to kill. He got out his TPS-950 pistol and stood next to [member="Avery Regailis"] . He knew that there was a chance that he could die, but Fireson did not care.

"What's the plan, Hoss?" Fireson said to Avery. "I got my pistol cocked and loaded. You know me, I never miss my target. No matter what. So, what IS my target?"

Chris's Corvette flashed out of hyperspace, followed by its escort starfighters and immediately accelerated to top speed. Chris chimed in on the ship wide comms " All hand to yellow alert " he hit the button for wide-band broadcast " This is Captian Chris Walker of The Nothmiro Federation and the Corporate Protectorate, any allied units in system please respond. Fireson heard the call from a fellow member. He knew that this would probably be big, Fireson reached out to his communicater and pressed the button to respond.

"What is happening?" asked Fireson. "Are you alright? Hello? Can you read? Sir. Hello? You are going in and out. Are you being attacked. Please respond."

Avery and Fireson, now deep within the pirate base, were close to where the prisoners were located. Avery looked at his young partner. He was fiery and quick to anger. Traits that weren’t a good sight in the world of assassination. If Nexus wanted an assassin then he would have to eliminate those characteristics of Fireson. Of course Avery had no doubt that Fireson could handle himself in a battle, in fact he’d seen it first hand, on the battle for Selvaris. But what Nexus had in store for him was far beyond his attitude and skill set. He was a thug under the tutelage of a sith lord, not an assassin. To be an assassin you need to be calm and collected, even in the most stressful situations. But Avery did know one thing. All Fireson’s gathered rage would be great for his Dark Side training. But still, Avery wondered why Nexus would chose the role of assassin for him. For whatever reason, Avery was sure it was a good one.

Avery turned his head to see Fireson answering the call that was coming in, even to Avery’s wrist communicator. He grabbed the com-link, deactivating it in the process. Avery held up one finger, shushing Fireson. He then pointed to the cell block where the prisoners were being kept. Avery would not be going to the cell block. He needed to make sure that all of the pirates were outside when he gave the signal.

Crouching, Avery moved to the control room. To him sounding the alarm was the best way to get the pirates outside. So he would. But after the prisoners were free, of course.

Fireson looked back at Avery. He understood why Avery did what he did, but he could not help it. The team needs to win. If they do not win, there will be no escaping.

"Yes sir," whispered Fireson. "What's our move? Lets get this party started." Fireson cocked his pistol and waited till the right move was ready. He was ready, but he did not wanna get caught.

She nodded at Credius' words.

"You are correct it is ugly. We at the Protectorate favor ruthless Pragmatism above all else. If it works we use it. If it's pretty but unpractical, we trash it."

The Captain had maneuvered them perfectly and engaged. Now the battle was on. From a trio of vessels they took rounds to their shields. Ari remained resolute, hands folded behind her back.

The Captain himself was calm as well, though unknown to him being augmented by Ari's prowess. She was feeding him a steady stream of calming energy. Minutes ago she had dominated the region of his mind that contained his fear response... and switched it completely off.

Fortune Favored the Bold

"Shields at three quarters Sir!"

"Launch all fighters, concentrate fire on one vessel at a time. Pick them off."

"Aye Sir."

Ari watched as Gala Interceptors streamed forth from the Jast Carriers. It was an impressive sight. They buzzed from their launch bays like hives of bees, swarming the Action IV's. Bolts and Concussion missiles penetrated armor plating. The garrish flashes of stutter firing emerald lasers tore some apart. In their death throes the pilots crashed their craft into the hulls, weakening them further.

"We currently only have the Gala Model on board. Though you are welcome to lead a sortie, I will remain here. I need to maintain Comms with Commander Bishop and Magistrate Regailis."

Mean while she kept searching for the hidden threat, casting her mind like a dragnet over the area...

Home Ship: CPS HIGHGARDEN
IN THE GRAVEYARD
COMMANDER BISHOP
FLYING GALA FIGHTER
AXE WING

They launched and began their hunt.

Like predators in the dark they prowled past debris, and shattered vessels. He noted the scorch marks on the hull, the crystallized oxygen and water around them. He wondered just how many of these crews had begged for their life or tried to flee in terror. It was a sad sight, but one that was uncomfortably common theses days.

"Distress beacons are stronger near that smashed Cutter. Going in to take a look."

"Roger that, I'm cutting engines to hang back. Axe check out the rest we'll catch up you."

His partner went in, gliding his fighter between floating armor plates. Sal grimaced. Keeping a level flight path was hell in here. One collision could set off a chain reaction of pieces and part flying back forth. Even with shields, it'd shred them.

"I have a very bad feeling about this."

"Yeah me too."

He glanced around. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Dead bodies, broken vessels.

One shiny flash caught his eye.

He maneuvered a little closer, and cut his thrusters.

"There's a freaking shipping container out here. Totally untouched..."

Location: Aboard the CPS Fang

"Ruthless pragmatism it may be, but there is more than one sort of effectiveness to the creation and the presence of a ship," Credius' made a swift waving motion with his right hand, to indicate that perhaps in due time, the consul might see it his way if he's present her with some of the designs his company had been working on. However, when the woman mentioned that he was allowed to lead a sortie if he so wished to do so, the marquis made a simple courteous bow and went off to leave the bridge, yet before he had completely done so, he turned around again for just a moment, feeling that however feint it might've been, that woman was actually using the force in some form or another. "Despite your ruthless pragmatism...you seem to use some subtlity as well, madame Zanareth. Perhaps this might be an interesting conversation for us later on."

With that he left the bridge and went down to the hangar bay, though upon arriving he immediately dismissed a mechanic who wondered if he was going back to his own ship. Instead, he walked straight past a squad of pilotes, looking at them for a moment before motioning them to come along. "I know it is sudden, but we're going to perform a secondary raid and act as support to the first wings which have already departed. Ready your fighters and leave at my command," Obviously those pilots were taken aback by someone who seemed to be nothing more than a simple guest, a spectator to this event to suddenly take the lead. However, he didn't care, this was all just to show to the consul that tactically he could be of use almost as much as financially. When standing in front of one of the Gala Fighters though, the man stopped for a second and simply grumbled that he'd need to provide the Corporate Protectorate with a more sophisticated type of fighter to act as interceptors. "If any of you have issues with me taking command, take it up with the captain and the consul. We leave in three, follow in a tight V formation and follow my lead."

As the engines of the Gala fighters roared to life, Credius opened the commlink to the bridge. "We're going to mop up the damaged enemy vessels, two support runs should suffice, by your command, Madame Zanareth." Now the squad left the hangar bay one by one, roaring past the Fang and making a wide arc around the back to fully strengthen and tighten the squad's formation before any engagement would be made. "Stay in formation, watch out for friendly fire and get rid of those damn ties scrambling around those frigates."

With that said, the formation zoomed through the vacuum of space, concentrating their firepower upon the already damaged Action IV's of the enemy. "That's ship's been hit more than a brat in a brothel, flank that Action IV, take out their hangars so we can screw up their support," He had to admit that the Gala fighter's controls were easy to understand and the starfighter was a willing subject to his moderate piloting skills, perhaps using it as a basis for a new interceptor wasn't such a bad idea after all. Yet Credius had to be careful, as just when the squad made their first run, one of the galafighters had been hit by the laser guns of a pursuing TIE, smashing itself to bits when crashing against the ACTION IV they were aiming to cripple. "Don't lose focus, we're going to sideswipe again, keep an eye out for those TIE's."

Cypher was late. His ships had been busy at Selvaris and so he was mostly concentrated on securing Selvaris for the Protectorate's use. Now, that was done. "All Ships set to condition one. Full Engines, get me my PDC's!" Screamed his second officer, Vice Admiral Iparis. The man had wit's hell the Only reason he was here was because Cypher wanted to make sure he knew what he was doing. He was not just going to hand off the entirety of Battle Group Two to an inexperienced Admiral with close connections to the Consul, no. But so far the man was vicious ordering entire ships to engage at point blank range. "Deploy our Gala Fighters. The Harder they are the Harder they fall" he ordered. The Fleet quickly silenced a squadron of outdated Tie Fighters as it made it's way to the CPS Fang. "This is Grand Admiral Cypher Rage, commanding War Fleet Tiberius aboard the Shield Class Star Destroyer, CPS Warrior. Fall back and prepare to engage the enemy with full force" he said through the Ship to Ship Comm ordering the Fang to fall into the Cover of his larger fleet.
