On the jedi order perspective (Open to Jedi Order)

The Jedi temple on Ossus
The lecture room was starting to fill up as Mantic strode in himself. He was not very accustomed to giving lectures but this was part of his duties as a knight of the order and he did feel the need to help wherever he could. He found no pride in being a warrior and this did give him a much wanted respite in that dreadful occupation.

Preparing his datapad two holo-projectors beamed to life, one on each side of the teacher culprit that dominated the center of the room. The left projected the symbol of the galactic republic and the left the symbol of the jedi order.

Right, he thought and coughed slightly to clear his throat. It was soon time to begin but he would give some time for the younglings and padawans to settle in and fall silent before he would begin. He lifted his chin slightly to eye the attending students. There might be friends among them and Mantic would make sure to note any such. But especially he made sure his own padawan - [member="Illyana Nightshade"] - was there. He was pretty strict on these things and she knew he would not ignore it if she failed to come.

Illyana had been one of the first to arrive in the room where the lecture would take place. As the room filled up she took a seat in the back. She sat quietly as she waited for Mantic to come into the room. Once he finally had she gave a slight wave hoping he could see her as he searched the crowd. She continued to sit quietly while she waited for him to start.

As the small group of students had settled in Mantic cleared his throat and raised his eyes toward those who had come to listen.

"Welcome," he started and offered a short but polite bow.

"Today I will not speak about the force per se but rather the duty that surround a jedi in service of the jedi order." he continued. As he spoke the two holoprojectors shifted images. Sometimes to reflect a symbol or even a location he was mentioning. At times specific words took the place. For starters the word "jedi" and "code" slowly thwirled in front of the assembled.

"You must never forget this very simple rule. Jedi, regardless of rank, are foremost servants." he nodded to his own words and made sure to sweep across the group meeting their eyes.

"This is also our greatest obstacle. Very few are strong enough to, when given the alternative, remain servants of the order. It will always be much more easy to seize a moment to create an order of your own. Seize a moment to head out in the galaxy where you see fit to help the weak and poor wherever you are needed." Mantic smiled and raised both his eyebrows, making sure his statement was to be considered.

"Just think on what one can do when the for e is your ally. Just think on all the good that you could do on so many levels without the restraints the order is putting on us."

"You will be tempted to follow this path, and you will run into force masters with various background and alliegences challenging your loyalty to the jedi order."

"Why should we stay true to this old relic at all? One might ask."
Taking a deep breath Mantic started to slowly walk among the culprits and the seated students as he continued to speak.

"The answer will annoy so many that even a sith would come short in spite." he tried jokingly.

"Dear students, padawans of the jedi order. The answer is to be found in the jedi code. It asks us of many things but is not to be interpreted litteraly. Many of those outside of the order will mock you for claiming such things. I have faced them and so will you. They will laugh at the code and the order, raising themselves above millenias of wisdom to advance their own theories i stead. In many cases this is a selfish and rather narrow sighted perspective. Which in itself is a dangerous state for any force users. It is one of many paths that slowly lures them toward the dark side, even though the road for them to recognize and accept it is long indeed." his voice went low with seriosity during the final phrase.

"There is no emotion..." he unfolded his hands in an unarming fashion.

"While we are loyal to the order we are not idiots. Of course there are emotions. It is what makes our servitude to life worth fighting for." he raised a finger to underline his words.

"Love, joy, compassion... these are emotions that we protect. Jedi have even given their lives to do so. Yes, there are many unsung heroes in our ranks, because we do not claim or need such recognition unless it in itself spread more joy to others. Always make sure you seperate your own pride from that of sharing or spreading happiness and security among others."
Mantic smiled. He knew he had been somewhat vague, but these were principles of great importance. These were times when the jedi order was bleeding, constantly being questioned by force users at all times. There were even more force users outside of the order then not. It was important that the new jedi would understand this early on. To some, including Mantic himself, this drainage of the order was even a more dangerous enemy then all the siths on a battle field.

He was about to get to the point but first he took a short pause and reached for a glass of water.

He placed the glass down and wet his lips. Looking over the padawans and younglings in the room was in itself a daunting evidence of the orders current state. Many of the seats were left empty and the room should held his voice in echo for longer then it should have if the fabrics of jedi robes that should be there had been there to absorb it.

Regardless of this he had to remind himself about that this was exactly the purpose of his lecture. He cleared his throat and gave a smile to those who indeed had presented themselves.

"The world is never still. It evolves as societies rise and fall. By war, popularity, or simply by time itself."

"The force however is still its centerpiece. Its heart, mind and soul. While no one can claim to fully understand it thousands of years of study are the jedi orders very foundation. In our archives masters of past ages has collected and shared their wisdom. When studying these masters you will find that they are indeed allowed doubt. History shows us that the Jedi Order is very open to discussion and debate about its tenets. But to change them is not done without a very long time of contemplation and input from others. We do not act rashly, we do not jump on opportunities because the seem right at the moment. That is dangerous and we must embrace ourselves against the lure."

Mantic flipped through a row of images on the holoprojections. Images of jedi flashed through.

"These were all great jedi of their time. And we need to rise to the challenge of our time. But do not stray from your truest mission, to remain servant. some of these great heroes of the past decided to defy the teachings of the order. To go on their own personal crusade, again often with good intent. But alas, their good intentions almost always turned into more suffering, more destruction and more diversion in the galaxy then would be possible for someone not attuned with the force."

"Remember that the force has chosen to manifest itself in you. It is not a right, but a privilege. always remain humble in this. As jedi you are nmot allowed to use the force to benefit your own need. This is imperative to remember."

Illyana sat quietly listening to Mantic absorbing the information so to speak. The young Padawan liked how her master viewed the order. She thoroughly enjoyed listening to him talk as he continued his lecture. She smiled to herself he began to speak about the force being the centerpiece of the chaos that is the galaxy. She watched closely as the Jedi flashed trying to recognize some of them as he paused. She turned her attention back to him as he continued listening she nodded the force should be used in the service of others makes sense I suppose.

'Jedi are servants to the public, no matter their rank,' the youngling thought to herself, quickly writing down what she was hearing. Whil using a datapad would likely have been far easier, the child was trying to work on her literacy. Master Yunfei, the elderly woman who had been taking care of her, had suggested that she try taking notes during one of the next lectures she attended. One might just assume that it was to help her remember what she was learning, but that definitely wasn't the case.

Vivienne Zambrano had excellent memory.
Just not very good penmanship, apparently.

'Sometimes life outside the order will sound really, really good,' she added, not even bothering to look at the journal she wrote in. Her gaze was firmly locked on the lecturer and his holoprojectors. Unsurprisingly that meant her already not-so-fine handwriting worsened for a moment. However she didn't really mind. The lecture was interesting enough to her (perhaps not the most engaging of topics for a youngster like her), so she knew she'd remember most of it anyway, whether or not she took notes.

'There are emotions, we just have to be careful about our own?' Vivienne wasn't sure if she had understood the teacher correctly. Quietly the girl made a mental note to either ask him for clarification later or to speak to Yunfei about emotions in general. Either worked for her (though she knew that speaking to the Master would make the old lady very happy) as long as she reached some level of understanding by the end of things.

Not that she really knew what she hoped to understand.

As the lecture continued she took a few more notes, mostly just little phrases she wanted to remember (like "it is not a right, it is a privilege") and words that she didn't know (like "privilege") so she could look them up later. Just like a good little munchkin.

sneaking in and taking a seat in the back before the man started speaking he waited quietly and when the man began talking tried to listen attentively about how jedis are first and foremost servants and that they should follow the jedi code ignoring the people who would laugh at millenias of age old wisdom unfortunately pally couldn't write any of this down so he had to take it all to heart this man's views on a thing called "the force " and "jedis" intrigued him but the sentence that stood out the most in the man's lecture was "Remember that the force has chosen to manifest itself in you. It is not a right, but a privilege. always remain humble in this." these words were the words that made pally want to learn everything he could about the "the force"

Varius

Champion of the Light
Varius was staying calm listening to mantic, he udnerstood what he had to say though he disagreed in some things. Mantic was a good friend and an even better master, though Varius was a stubborn one, he still has his thoughts and he never admited theya re the best. However he listened and considered everything his master said, he was deeply silent and uncomunicative with anyone around, hsi focus being only on the words he heard and his mind thinking and thinking again. He wanted to be sure he udnerstands what he says, to think that maybe What he thinks and what Mantic says aren't really that different things and in truth they were not, the only difference was Varius didn't completely trust the code and many times questioned it, However it kept him away from the dark side and many times it serevd as a perfect guide, maybe both things are true... or maybe Varius is wrong.

However he was happy to know that the code wasn't literally and finally thought that there might be a third option, maybe both he and Mantic were right at some parts, maybe the code really was good as it was and he just thought about it in the wrong way.

With the attention of the students brought more into a close Mantic stopped walking around and placed himself in front of the class with his hands on his back.

"Now, what I have said might feel discouraging. Why should we not embrace the glory that could be ours? Why should we not acknowledge pride, hope, love to empower us in our struggle against the shadow?" he continued and raised a questioning eyebrow, as if he himself sometimes asked this very question to himself.'

"Well, the answer is quite simple and can be found in our grand masters code of conduct: Defend the innocent, the meek, and the defenseless, even at the cost of your own life, but know you are not superior to your fellow sentient or their judgement." Mantic paused to give the listeners a moment to catch up and perhaps take notes. The grand masters code of conduct was an important part of the jedi training but was sometimes also overlooed in the shadow of the jedi code.

"While what we as peace keppers are in many aspects heroic the true heroes are those people who struggle without any special connections to the force, but still staying true to the higher and good cause that we strive to embody. consider the single mom tearing her life apart to offer her children food on the table without resolving to criminal activites, the senator refusing the lure of corruption and wealth in favoir of serving her people, the soldier following orders to stand ground to save others despite certain defeat in the end." Mantic raised his eyes to meet those listening.

"They are the real heroes of the republic. And it is them we serve fore most. As jedi we can be proud of this and we can feel joy and love for the sake of them. But not in the fray, not on the field. The temptations to let once emotions steer your actions in that moment is dangerous and can easily lead to steps down the dark side. Save your emotions for times when we can help each other and enjoy them together as brothers and sisters."

"This, younglings and padawans, is the role of a jedi. always remain humbled before this task and make sure to remember who we truly serve."

Mantic took a deep breath. His lecture was coming to an end.

"Now, I hope that you have learned something here today, or perhaps gained a new perspective. While our time is running out I will remain here for while to answer any questions you might have. Otherwise - class dismissed."

Illyana listened dutifully as the lecture came to a close. She stood and approached her master. "That was beautifully put master" she looked back as many people had already begun to file out. She looked back to him "So when exactly is the right time to reflect on her emotions and how should we do it?" she wasn't sure on this she normally reflected on how she felt when she was alone in her room.

Arturin raised himself from where he had been sitting. He had taken a great deal of mental notes. Many beings thought that being a jedi was all "magic" and swinging a lightsaber. However, Jedi were much more, especially to Arturin. Although other students had begun to file out, Arturin remained to gain extra knowledge from any questions the Jedi Master would wisely answer.

He had been standing near the doorway, listening to Mantic teach the entire time. It had been an enjoyable moment for him to slip away from the Galaxy and focus what truly mattered in life. Leaning against the frame way, he heard what Mantic said, words of wisdom that still stood the test of time, all the way back to the formation of the Jedi. However, when images had flashed to show Jedi of old, those who would be remembered throughout history, there were several he saw that he remembered personally.

Closing his eyes, his breathing came quick for a second before he slowed it down, wiping a tear from his eye. He had never expected to be this old, to outlive everyone he had known throughout his life: his master, his mentors and guides, his friends and colleagues, his apprentices...

The woman he loved who had loved him...

His daughter, grandson and granddaughter...

Keeping a steady hand on his cane, he knew that the words Mantic spoke were true, but that no matter what was said, the pain never truly went away...

"Save your emotions for times when we can help each other and enjoy them together as brothers and sisters."

Nodding slowly, Mantic's words may have been meant for the padawans and younglings, but even a Jedi Master is still able to be learn...

Mantic shuffed his documents and turned of the holoprojector as the students started to leave. He gave polite nods to everyone seeking his attention as the walked out and then turned to his padawan.

"While we must decide for ourselves when the time is right, I will offer you the advice to take the more heated and dark emotions seriously. You will soon have learned how to shield your mind from emotions, that is good in the short run. But you must always remember to reflect upon them at a later time. Otherwise you risk unleashing it when it is too late." he tried to explain.

For example, when I return from a mission where I have been forced to engage in combat, I shut out the dread and fear that war brings. But I make sure to meditate on it once I am in a place where I know I would get support and help should I require it. I for one also find peace and safety when teaching you." Mantic smiled.

The lesson was over and Mantic prepared to leave.
