How does one learn about the creation of starships/vehicles in regards to the spec's. Is there a guide that explains these in the easiest possible way?

If it's just the appearance for a droid, sure.

If the idea is to make a gundam or mecha then no, it is not.

If I am wanting to make up a weapon from a canon company would it need a dev thread. (I would love to give it at least a backstory and specs to make it a bit more detailed then just a gun)

It depends on the weapon, but generally speaking if it is not extremely ambitious and does not contain a restricted material you will be fine
