Private Obsidian Inquiries || Obsidian Council

N E W C O M E R
The Council Chamber of Arx Obsida were quiet. Brooding, almost. Such was the weight of the decision that the Marshals were faced with. Though Voph had spoken to them earlier, it was now time to decide what would become reality, and what would remain a hypothetical. Word had been left not to disturb the council except in dire circumstances. Such was the secrecy of their gathering, that only the Vicelord himself could have entered without Voph's express permission. What the Council had gathered to discuss? The matter of one Cord Starfall, who had come offering her assistance in their darkest hour. Voph was unsure of her intent, or her ability, but if his gut was right, she would prove a valuable ally to both the Knights Obsidian as a whole.

The Council was not assembled in its entirety, but that was of little concern to Voph. They had been informed of what was at stake here. Their absence meant the forfeit of their vote. When the council was gathered, Voph spoke without standing. "Tonight, we gather to discuss the fate of Cord Starfall, and her future within our ranks. You will all be given time to ask whatever questions you may have of her, and to administer any tests you wish. When you have gathered what information you need, her fate shall be put to a vote. To join the Council, or to remain at her current position. If we are not unanimous, she shall not earn her place at our table."

Voph turned his attention to the door, and lifted an armored gauntlet to wave the door open. The guards, in turn, ushered Cord within the room, pulling the doors shut behind them. Voph waited as Cord approached the table, gesturing to an empty chair opposite the rest of the Council. "Knight Starfall. You stand before the Obsidian Council. It is our intent to assess your skill and your knowledge. If you fulfill our expectations, then you will be granted a seat upon this council, and granted equal voice. To you, members of the Council, look well upon this hopeful with a discerning eye. Today, it shall be decided if she possesses the ability and the fortitude to call herself a true Obsidian. Ask your questions well, Council. Whomever wishes to begin, the floor is yours."

The Nightmother sat tall in her seat, her green eyes having slowly taken in each before Voph began to speak. Participating in moments such as these were important. Easier to do perhaps given recent losses, yet even at scale each of them should endeavor to give time to recognize those striving to become more than they were. Yet such elevation was not a token gesture of social or political maneuvering. Equally important was ensuring such recognition had been earned and was the reflection of one's very being -- as someone they could entrust with vital matters. Ever more so when one sought to join the Council itself.

Slowly she turned her gaze toward the doors through which Cord Starfall would enter the chamber. Of course, given the opportunity, she could ask what was only expected of someone in her position to ask. She could even monologue about the importance of the station, or the responsibility shouldered should it come to pass. All very traditional things to do. Full of vocalized thoughts whether prepared in advance or swiftly assembled on the spot. Vytal did not feel like leading with such.

The pale Witch extended her right palm face up. A green mist rose from the center of her palm until it coalesced into a sphere reflective of a distant world now suspended over the heads of the Council. "Paralaxus V is the home to over one billion sentient lifeforms," Vytal began without preamble, "and deep within its surface is a Well of ancient technology none understood -- until now. An organized rebellion previously thought little more than rabble has suddenly seized the Well. Intelligence believes the technology could unleash a destructive wave of energy great enough to destroy neighboring star systems. The Knights have dispatched a Fleet to surround Paralaxus V. You have one hour before it is believed the weapon is ready to fire. Thoughts." She did not ask Starfall what they would do, she expected them to tell them however succinctly or at length they deemed appropriate.

This was the first time Cord had gotten to meet the council of the Knights Obsidian at least on any formal level. She stood before them her Ancient sith mask upon her face one side silver and the other side amethyst purple the mask was covered in in gold sith runes. The runes depicted a thousand and one sins, the Sins of Cord Starfall. Those that could read the old dead language would note mentions of mass murder, genocide, and many more atrocities a true depiction of a monster. A monster who had been trained to kill from the moment she could crawl, and who had taken her first kill at age six.

A darkness protruded from Cord out towards all those seated revealing the deep dark scars permanently burned on her soul and aura. The scars seemed to go hand in hand with the sins upon the mask, given one the image of a truly dark individual. Not to mention she was wearing her normal green weighted long coat and light sith battle armor underneath. Hanging from her belt were two sith swords. Cord was fully armed she had no idea what she was walking into when she was invited to the meeting of the council. As one who had been both sith and Jedi she new not to enter these kinds of things unprepared.

Though she was prepared she was not on the defensive and maintained a relaxed posture before the Obsidian council. Granted she was eying each of them up and down taking note of any weapons they might have and the attire they were wearing. She assessed it all tactics she might employ if this turned south and possible escape routes as she waited for one of them to speak. As she waited for them to speak, she wondered if they expected her to kneel, because if they did they would be waiting here an eternity she was a descendant of Ice, the children of Ice did not kneel.

Then the Nightmother spoke spinning her hand as the green Ichor magick formed into a green sphere then took shape into a world. A world Cord had never heard of perhaps it was fictitious or perhaps she just had never heard of it. Though it did not matter as that was not the purpose as the Nightmother spoke, laying out a scenario before Cord.

Cord thought it over as both her hands reached up to remove the helmeted mask from her face. As she did so auburn locks feel to her shoulders and for the first time the glowing Orange eyes of The Allyan Dathmiri Witch of the Howling Crags Clan looked into the nightmothers’ green eyes. Her Mask and helmet broke down into three parts and was displaced inside her coat. The Orange eyes were the outward sign of darkside scars Cord bared.

“Assuming we know where the weapon is, we send in a strike force to attempt to subdue the rebels and secure the weapon. With the Naval forces on standby to strike the surface where the weapon is if the strike force is unable to complete it’s task within the allotted time given to them.” Now that was Assuming, they knew where the weapon was, and they could reach it. “I get that the strike force might be sacrificed but a knight chooses to serve and sometimes you have to give your life to protect.” Cord’s tone was serious as she spoke she did not smirk or smile as she laid it out.

Cord had worn many hats in her long life raised sith at birth, turned Jedi, becoming a pirate, and finding her Dathomiri roots. Yet even as a Pirate though she was often self-serving she still believed ultimately the need s of the many outweighed the needs of the few. So, the sacrifice of a few Knights and the rebels who might have had some just cause, to save billions on other worlds was the moral choice in her mind. “The needs of the many always out way the needs of the few. Now that is given, we know where the weapon is. If we do not, we would have to scan for it and take it out from orbit.” Now someone might propose signaling those worlds of their impending doom but that would only raise panic and there would be no time to evacuate with only an hour anyway.

Now there were a few other ways this scenario could play out that Cord could foresee but without further details they were not mentioned as there was a Higher chance, they were not plausible to pull off. With the little information she had a simple strike time on a time sensitive mission with naval bombardment at the ready seemed the simplest and most efficient.

Judging a new candidate to take a seat at the Master Council was a new experience for her. The last time such had happened she was the one on trial and the circumstances were also different, hers being more of a small promotion ceremony. It was just another reminder of the changes the knights had been through over the years, todays events being the first testing ground for herself to see if such would work.

Cord upon her entrance easily embodied what most people though when told 'dark force user'. From attire to the darkness seeping from her body, even her scent was that of pitch black. It was something she'd mainly seen in die hard Sith and certain family members, it would certainly be interesting to see how this person acted with such darkness as a member of the council.

Though this and many other thoughts ran through her mind Kurenai was calm and composed while observing the women, not showing any emotion to hit towards her personal thoughts on them. This trial was to be impartial, for both the council member and the respective nominee.

As the women came to the center Vytal Noctura Vytal Noctura was the first to speak up, laying down a scenario in order to test her commanding and reasoning. Considering how the Knights acted now even if one wasn't suited for it being thrust into a position to command missions on a large scale was always possible, the scenario put forward always a constant threat. It actually gave her a better idea of what to test her on once the first question had been answered.

All Kurenai gave to their response to the Nightm others test was a small nod to signify that she had understood the women's words but that was all, herself turning to face the night mother briefly.
"If you do not mind would you allow me to use said scenario again but in a slightly different light"? Her attention would then turn back to cord as she began to speak. "You have shown ability's to reason a certain mission in light of a known threat, but allow me to alter things". "In this scenario the knowledge about the Well is still
unknown, only rumors, at this time and the group responsible isn't planning to make any moves... yet".

"A skilled recon team has been sent in to try and disclose the validity of these rumors and to gauge if the group is indeed a threat". "The last message from the world informed you that they were close, but now they have gone dark". "You have no more contact and no way of knowing what has happened to them". "If in charge of that operation what would 'you' do as your next course of action". Kurenai put extra emphasis on the 'you' part.

Cord turned her head slightly to look to the next Master of the obsidian order to ask their question. Cord gave a polite head nod as the woman asked if she could ask a similar scenario with altered parameters. Then Cord Listened to the new scenario put before, her right eyebrow raised slightly at the mention of sending in a recon team to investigate. A recon team sounded so military, though the mission over all might have been military in nature, Investigation to Cord needed a more delicate hand. It was perhaps just semantics, but Cord didn’t like the term of recon team it made her think of soldiers in armor shaking down people for information by force.

“First, I am going to assume I didn’t send in the recon team. If I did, I would promptly space myself for poor decision making.” Cord smirked and laughed lightly to let them know she was not calling the scenario as a whole bunk just the idea of a military recon team on such a mission was funny to her. A military recon team had its place when time was an issue brute force was often the only way to gather information, but the time constraint had been removed from the scenario. “Since the time constraint had been removed from the previous scenario, I would have sent in a single force user trained in the shadow arts and investigation. They have more delicate and undetectable methods of gathering information where a recon team often uses brute force. The second thing is iif a force user goes dark well you can apply more methods of finding out what happened to them, then you do with a non-force user.”

Cord felt like she was ripping this scenario apart because it was far from how she would have approached the situation from the start. A very long time ago most likely before anyone on this Obsidian council was born as she didn’t know how old any of them really were she had sat on the Jedi High Council as the Representative of the Council of First Knowledge or as some called it the Order of Shadows. As a Sith she was a warrior but as Jedi she had been a counselor trained in investigation, shadow arts, and infiltration. The permanent darkside scars left on her aura and soul made her particularly adept at seeking out darkside cults and artifacts. The darkside energy that seeped off her was not a choice it was curse she had to bare, though she could have hidden it she didn’t it was part of her and she didn’t want to hide who she was or who she had been. She had tried that once to hide her scars, sins, and the monster that lived inside her all it did was get people hurt.

“I don’t mean any disrespect by my comments on the scenario. It’s just not how I would have handled it from the start. That said if I took over the mission, I would send in a force user trained in the shadow arts and investigation to track the missing recon team. If a force user goes dark you can try to detect their presence in the force, if you can’t, you can try to conjure or contact their spirit. If Both those things fail, you have already discerned three important pieces of information.”

Cord brought her right hand up and put her index finger up to display one. “One they have a method of Detecting the force, Nullifying, or suppressing the force. They don’t necessarily need to be able to detect it but is clear they have a way of nullifying it or suppressing it.”

Cord then brought up her middle finger to join her index finger in Two. “Second since it’s clear that tracking devices are detected and somehow nullified, along with the nullification affects of the force, it shows this is clearly a sophisticated operation. They certainly at least in theory should be considered very well armed, trained, and have heavy defenses. Simply put they either have the tech or Force users to pull off the feat of making a force user disappear.” Though it could be that the weapon itself had some form of force nullification or something more naturally occurring, but it was better to assume the group a was well-armed and defended rather than underestimating them.

Cord then raised her ring finger alongside the index and middle to make three. “You have the location of the base. Force Nullification or suppression has a unique quirk to it that makes it easily detectable even by a jedi Padawan. You feel the force but instead of where the force is you look at the spots it isn’t, those cold dead spots should be what you’re looking for unless its Ysalamiri mating season or a Vong orgy is going on.” Cord dropped her arm and put it behind her back, she was smirking more at her last comment even though it probably came off as her being cocky to the council.

“Also, if the force user doesn’t go dark in their search, they will track the missing recon team up the point they disappeared and more then likely track them down. Also, if it were my mission, I would be the force user volunteering if I could no need to put anyone else’s life on the line.” Cord would rather put herself in harms way then others if she had the choice and even though she was sure of her plan it was still a gamble. Any plan of hers that might require sacrifice even in the scenario before she would have been in the strike force. She would not ask others to do something she wasn’t willing to do herself.

The Witch born of Dathomir regarded the other woman as she removed the helmet that had previous hid her features. Nary a muscle on the pale Witch's face moved as Cord spoke. Radiant, green eyes regarded their applicant without blinking as though they were occupied drilling into the other woman. Neither smiled in providing question or response, as each had been quite serious. The scenario was plausible and even if the Knights were not engaged in 'military' operations as a matter of daily affair, the fact remained they could be called upon to command such situations. They held a rank to command such units when the circumstances required it. An Obsidian Lord needed to be capable of handling such an occasion.
Only when Kurenai spoke did the Witch move, and only to nod her head in response to adopting the scenario for further questioning.
Cord soon gave a lengthy response to the other Master's inquiry. The manner and tone had changed slightly. Little was hidden as the woman announced just how unfavorable certain presumptions were, should the entire scenario be under Cord's control. Fortunately, the woman did not assume to rewrite circumstances to her liking alone, and responded to what was asked of her.
None of which altered what the Nightmother had to ask next. "Paralaxus V is inhabited by one billion sentient lifeforms. Neighboring systems equally match that number and may be destroyed should the weapon be used. You say the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few. How do you decide which is which, if destroying the weapon would kill everyone on the planet below?"
If anyone thought Vytal had delivered the worst case scenario before, she would be happy to take it one step further. One billion on the left. One billion on the right. A planetary gun about to discharge, and the need to choose where to point it.
Combat was easy. Deciding who lived and who died -- whose lives were more worthy -- was difficult. You rarely had the opportunity to peer into the hearts and souls of all those you would effect, nor to peel back the fog of time to know which choice delivered the less severe of consequences. The galaxy was replete with precariously balanced moments, and inevitably someone would great hurt. If not on the planet you were on now, then on a planet on the other side of the galaxy as someone that fled into the void makes their displeasure known. Perhaps you could sleep well at night, ignorant of the ramification of your choices; but sometimes you weren't afforded that blessing. One billion people whose lives might get snuffed out in an instant from one's action or inaction. So, Vytal was curious, which would Cord choose?

Just as quickly as she answered the last the next question up the ante. Posing the moral dilemma of what if you had to choose one world over the other. Now both Paralaxus V and its neighboring system where both at threat from the weapon controlled by a rebel faction. At face value it really did seem to be a moral dilemma have to choose who lived and who died. “All life is valuable, but we are not gods we can not save them all.” Cord’s tone had quickly turned to one of remorse. She could easily take a life but in no instance did she like it, like the monster in her who thirsted for it. She thought over the question for a long moment with only the information she had available.

Though it was supposed to form a moral dilemma because one side could not be saved, in truth it really was not. “I see a clear side in this though a billion lives will be lost, Paralaxus V will….” Cord’s mind wandered for a moment all the voice of the people she had killed screaming in her head as if they were the billions on the fiction world Paralaxus V. Screaming why, how could you , and you are stillt he monster you buried inside yourself.

She pushed the voices aside and finished. “Paralaxus V will have to be sacrificed for the greater good.” The Greater good what ever that was this Galaxy had been at war since near the dawn of its existence. It thrived and lived on conflict Cord was not sure there ever was any good in it. Yet in the case of this fictional world Sacrificing Paralaxus V was indeed for something akin to the greater good as it might avoid a greater conflict.

“You would sacrifice Paralaxus V because it might prevent a war of retaliation. Paralaxus V rebels ultimately destroyed their people and themselves. It will prevent a greater conflict at the cost of a billion lives.”
Though the world was one of fiction Cord wished there could have been a way to save them all but as old as she was new that was not always possible. “The Galaxy will move from Paralaxus V looking to for it’s next conflict.” Cord remarked cynically thought she seemed less confident in this answer then last two.
