Private Not Just a Paperweight

My office is a work in progress. It is smaller than the drawing room upon which I had been getting used to. But at the very least this office space is mine alone. It is not shared.

Decorating it has been a bit of a challenge. I wish to create the space as my own. I have put up a few of my paintings, although I am certain that none would know that I had painted them. I also have included one by Mister Arbosa ( Lord Ki Lord Ki ) for the flowers on it are so very beautiful. I have my liquor cabinet and bookshelves, vases and statues. Even my desk houses some of the newest gifts that I have acquired in recent months. Yet how to arrange them upon my desk so that they are displayed and not in the way is quite the trick!

One such gift is this beautiful paperweight that has an inner glow of it's own. I can only assume that it is similar to the ring that I wear. Or perhaps it is only the sunlight that causes such a reaction? I am uncertain. Yet some of my staff tell me that the color is beautiful. I may just move it to one of the bookshelves if I find it to be too distracting.

Well one of these days I will have it all straightened out and that my office will be exactly how I want it to be. For the moment I need a break from it, so I pour myself a glass of wine and step out onto the adjacent balcony. Ever mindful of my security detail watching over me, I still do my best to pretend that they aren't even there. It is not out of snobbery but moreso as a request. I am not to distract them with bouts of conversation while they are on duty. And out of respect I do as they say. My life is in their hands, afterall.

Sith Artifacts not found by Jedi or the Ashlans were rare. That's what Aliris learned in her brief travels across the galaxy. Then again, she was just a kid. That's what people said anyway. She hated that, more than anything. Too young to be investigating this kind of problem or something. She'd already killed people for this, for her family, her legacy. It was the only tie she had to her family name.

Get them back, figure out who she was supposed to be, figure out where her family went. Simple objectives. Actually getting the artifacts? Not the same.

This job was a longer con. Sometimes being a kid had it's advantages. No one thought twice to a young teen wanting a job to help where they could. Find themselves a path from the orphanage they'd run from, try to get a leg up. She was working in the kitchen. Had been for a month, just listening, watching. Waiting. Seemed there were a couple attempts on the bureaucrat's life. That made things more complicated. More guards, more surveillance. Even stepping out of the kitchen had eyes on her.

The next best thing was to deliver food. So, pushing a trolley, she went up to the office. Paused to let the security detail check it over before she knocked on the door.

"Ma'am? I've brought dinner."

The words coming from behind me broke me from my thoughts. And delightfully so.

I finish my wine and bring the empty glass inside with me. I offer a polite smile to the young lady that brought in my dinner. "And what is on the menu for tonight?" She must be a new hire, or one that has changed their position into being a server. She is pretty though, I will give her that.

I head over to my desk and sit down, placing the empty glass next to the decanter. I tuck my feet underneath my chair after crossing them at the ankles and wait patiently for my dinner to be set in front of me. "It smells lovely."

"Oh. Uh. It's.. Soup."

Aliris blinked, glancing from where she'd been scanning around the room to actually look at the official she was planning to rob. Right. Whoops. Pay attention to the lady until she looked away long enough to snatch it. Simple. Easy.

"Chives, I think. I'm not well versed in the herbs and vegetables they put in." She pulled up the tray, setting it out on the table for Liin before, once more, sneaking a peek around the room for what she was looking for.

"I hope it's to your liking, ma'am."

A light supper then. It makes me wonder if my Mother had asked the chefs to plan it that way in order to help maintain my figure. Afterall, I had been meeting with plenty of people high up on the social ladder and that has brought with it plenty of extravagant meals.

I lift up the dome and watch as the cloud of steam escapes. And it is a lovely smelling cloud! Just the fragrance alone makes my mouth water. Yet I maintain my impeccable manners as always.

I unfold the cloth napkin and place it on my lap, speaking as I do so. "You are fairly new here, are you not? How are you liking it?"

"New? Uh. Yeah. Pretty new. It's.. Nice. I get meals and a bed, so, can't really complain."

Aliris shrugged a little, frowning. It wasn't something she thought about, but being here, well. Why wouldn't she think about it? She was still a kid. No matter how many people she ended up killing. It seemed people would see her the same way, too. Her gaze shifted as she.. Felt it. The artifact. A brow slowly raised as she saw it just sitting there. Ignorance was bliss, huh?

"If I may, what is that?"

I catch her frown and I cannot help but wonder what she is thinking. Yet it is not my position to pry. In fact my mother often discourages talking with the kitchen staff.

I gather my spoon and dip it into the soup, bring it up to my lips and gently blow on it before taking it into my mouth. It is as flavorful as it's fragrence. I swallow it as she asks me about a trinket on my desk. The glow had surely caught her attention. "It is beautiful, is it not? It is a paperweight given to me by a business associate in appreciation for my work. The craftsmanship of it is truly remarkable." Often times I have wondered if it is a puzzlebox of sorts. I have heard of those before.

I take another spoonful of my soup as the young woman seems a bit preoccupied with her thoughts. She asks me of one of my associates and I can only presume that it is in regards to the paperweight.

"Mister Sinclaire. He runs a small mining company in the Outer Rim." Or at the very least, that is as much as I knew about him. It is not my job to vet everyone that wishes for a contract. The only thing that is required is payment. How they get it or where it comes from is irrelevant. "I am sure that you can find others like it in a trinket shop. A little search on the holonet should prove fruitful."

So she did just think it was nothing valuable?

Aliris let out a breath. Tried to keep it calm, at least. Not that she did. It was an angry breath. An artifact from her family's vault, as little more than a paperweight. No, it wasn't going to sit here any longer, not if she had a say in it. She turned to her, watching the politician. Then raised a hand. Reached out with the Force. Mind tricks were something easy, right?

"You want to give me that paperweight."

I raise a brow at the sudden releaae of breath. The young lady was not very pleased with what I had to say.

I set down my spoon beside my bowl on the tray and tilt my head to the side ever so slightly as she raises her hand at me as though she is some sort of space wizard, and has the gall to give me an order of sorts. "I know that you are new here, so I shall let that relapse slide just this once. It is not your place to assume and propose such an order."

Why is it that she cares about the paperweight so much? My eyes are drawn to it. Clearly there is much more to it than I had come to know. I pick it up with one hand, open up a drawer in my desk with another and place it inside before closing the drawer. It is not very difficult to hear the clicks as the drawer locks itself.

"Now I suggest that you see yourself back to the kitchens. I will see to my dishes later."
