Description: A medium sized island near Freetown, New Sert is hilly to mountainous as it sits near several reefs. It is sparsely populated with the village of Tunis being the most populated place on the island. After years of heavily harvesting wood on the island there is some effort by locals to replant and restore New Sert to a lush glory.
Fort Marion : A large rock and wood fort that used to lay between the two mountains. During the time the settlers arrived and experienced problems they set forth building the fort, nearly taking all the trees on the island during the process. Time and weather, along with disuse, caused Fort Marion to fall into disrepair over the years. Now all the remains is the rock foundation and some half-rotted logs. It is a popular tourist destination however despite the fact the old fort is little more than ruins.
Village of Tunis : The first fishing village on New Sert and it remains the most important one. Located in the protected cove it also serves as a docking point for the hundreds of boats that pass through each day. If a fish or sea creature can be caught and sold for profit, you’re most likely to find it for sale at one of the fishmongers shops within the village.
Nalut Reef : Quickly becoming popular with tourists but well known to locals over the years. Bright and colorful it stretches near Tunis up towards the mountains. A high number of fisherman can be found in this area, some chose to bring high-paying tourists for fishing expeditions for the day.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Sert Island was a hotly contested territory between slavers and the settlers who first set foot on Arkas. Both groups wanted to lay claim to the island due to the mountains on the far end and use the crude Fort Marion for their own devices. Neither group was successful in their overtaking of Sert Island and the land mass changed hands for many years and saw many battles. When the Levantine Sanctum (and later Silver Jedi) moved into the area and started to clean up Arkas, Sert Island fell silent.
After the battles of Sert Island had stopped the island remained relatively uninhabited beyond a few straggling settlers who sought to overtake what they had rightfully thought was theirs all along. Some of the straggling settlers were soon joined by a small handful newly freed slaves. The slaves, not knowing much else, turned to farming and fishing to sustain themselves. Soon New Sert Island became known as a base and home port for a number of fishers in the nearby area.
As Firemane approached the area of Freetown, officers and soldiers alike became attracted to the island. Slowly a number of Firemane employees moved to the island, enjoying the step back from the more urban and ‘busy’ center of Freetown. Small centers of settlements started to pop up on the island, now drawing attention from outsiders coming to do business on Arkas.
At its heart, New Sert Island remains a small sleepy fishing village with trade and tourism vital to the island.
